I have the four small deep dish pies version and I absolutely love it. The other night I shredded up some left over roast beef, mixed it with some thick gravy and sautéed mushrooms. So delicious. I’ve also done a berry version which was great. Just some tips: If you dust a little flour over the bottom pastry it should help thicken the juices a little and stop them from leaking out. Turn the machine on to heat before you start constructing the pie. I just use a spoon to press the bottom layer of pastry into place. The base comes out a lot better and the cooking time is shorter. The higher you pile the filling, the better the top comes out. You want the top plate to be in full contact with the pastry for an evenly crisp finish. You don’t need to seal before you close. I don’t egg wash my pies. They turn out nice and brown without it. I also don’t add any sugar until the last 5 minutes. It still goes nice and caramel. You can open the machine to check occasionally. Just do it quickly so you don’t affect the temperature too much. Also. Try a pie with a short crust base and scrunched up filo pastry (lightly oiled) on the top. It looks and tastes lovely.

Doesn't look very much quicker or easier than just using a regular pie pan and putting it in the oven. The crust cutter looks handy though. I guess if you don't have an oven and really like pies. Just another gadget that ends up in the back of the cabinet till it gets sold in a yard sale, where someone else can buy it and make one pie with it and then put it in the back of their cabinet. Love this channel, always fun to watch.

I want to make pies and quiche just like everyone else and this gives me the opputunity to do so

Obviously you are not a wheelchair user. Me, being a wheelchair user, the pie maker is freaking amazing. I can make a whole pie at the kitchen table and not have to worry about dropping the pie or burning myself using the oven that is just not as accessible as it could be. Able bodied people 🙄. Disabled people need to eat too. I wish this item was much more readily available.

I always think about a lot of these types of gadgets for big meal prep, like christmas, where the cook isn't blessed with multiple oven. My mum is very territorial about her oven space during those times and I had to make my contribution with a teeny toaster oven. This frees up the pie slot.. I might have to get this.

I could see this potentially saving some power too, I can only imagine it's easier to heat up that little plate than keep an entire oven at the same temp. Though might be wrong there, it just feels like it would save a bit. And not heat up your place so save a bit on cooling there too, unless it's winter time and you'd like the bonus warm lol.

Hi Barry, love your videos. I don't usually make a habit of commenting but I noticed that you were using a coiled extension cable for the pie maker. The heat generated from the electricity travelling around the coiled wire can quite easily get too hot when in use as there is no air getting around the cable to keep it cool. The wire could potentially melt and trip the circuit, or even set on fire. I don't want to sound all health and safety about it, but I felt I had to mention this as I've seen a fire caused by this and I'm not sure it's common knowledge that these extention cables need to be fully uncoiled to be used safely. Keep up the good work, I love secret vlog club!

I am surprised you didn't use your favorite apple core and slice device for this. I use mine for pies every fall. It really helps. The burning was from the sugar. I wouldn't add that until the pie is cooling .
@Caitlin1928

The major downside is, it's harder to store the pie in the fridge as you have to take it out of the maker. With a normal pie dish, you can let it cool down and then put the pie with the dish in the fridge (covered up). Also, the family size ones are not available in the US. Luckily, there are a couple of different brands of mini pie makers.
@shamapes

That looks like a fun gadget. I love the idea you can take it right out of the pan and not to have to worry about fiddling around with a pie plate to get that first piece out. You are missing the ice cream ;) or for some a piece of Cheddar cheese on top.

I was wondering if the plates were removable and thinking they should be for the same reason. I have a Cuisinart Griddler. It has plates that are removable with a grill on one side and griddle on the other, plus extra waffle iron plates. This pie type of device should absolutely have 5+ uses. I think the creator would make a fortune from many millions of people who don't want 50 cooking devices if they price it right (not like the $$$ KitchenAid attachments).

I think it said no egg wash for a reason 🤣. I applaud your work though! I’m a chef and in culinary school everyone would always say, “You can either be a chef and or you can be a baker. It’s one or the other, you can’t be both. Chefs can’t bake and pastry chefs can’t cook.” (Obviously it’s a little over the top, but you’d be surprised how accurate that statement is at times!) I personally couldn’t bake to save my life!… I do try though ☺️

Nope. General electric appliances and indoor (non-commercial) extensions in the UK don't have enough draw to hear the cable. Plus the cabling is usually coiled copper, which makes any heating or shorting even less likely.

You should really uncoil the extension lead. It will say how many watts you can use it coiled and uncoiled. Generally 750w uncoiled which I suspect this appliance is around 1.5kw.

I've watched one review of the Dash mini pie maker, and its performance wasn't that great either. It seemed to brown the crust by contact but didn't actually bake the filling, and some areas of the crust were raw. This one seems to do better but other than freeing up the oven for other cooking at Christmas or other major holidays, I don't see much advantage over just using the oven. I don't have a lot of extra storage space for it either. Great review, thanks!

Ehm... That cable is made to be manhandled. The only time such a cable will fail, it is generally at the Plug or connection point. You twist that type of cable back and forth hundred times, and you will not snap the copper inside the extension cable. Also, this is 230-240 volt appliances. Which means, the current(Ampere) is much lower than for US appliances. Meaning, the cable takes less beating in form of heat. At max, there is like 5-6A in that cable. The cable looks like a, 1.5 copper diameter which is rated for up to 13A. It is called a Rubber Cable for a reason. Not to mention, generally the copper wires are twisted around one another, which reduces the Magnetic fields ability to produce resistance. Albeit, that amount of resistance is negligible at best.

First of all the leads on this sort of gadget are often very short, so no unraveling to do, second of all power cables in the UK are at least 2.5mm, 1.5mm cables are intended for lighting only. There are thermosetting cables that are designed to be installed in and not not moved around and flex cables that are designed to move around freely, often used on electrical appliances.

I am not talking about the size of the cable I am talking about what back emf / eddy currents do to leads. Please look it up it is marginally quite interesting. I use 220v in the country I live in and work in the construction industry and have seen many contractors leads destroyed by simply not unrolling their leads fully.

The cable extension reels will state how many amps can be used when coiled up. My own cable extension states maximum 7Amps curled up and 13Amps when fully extended.

I know this is an old video and you probably won’t see this comment, but a great way to make apple pie is to use the same process you did but instead of heating the apple mix on the stove you add about 3-4 tablespoons of tapioca and stir all the ingredients together. Then cling wrap the bowl and let it sit in the fridge for about 4 hours. After that just put the pie filling in cold and bake the pie, it’s absolutely fantastic!

I believe your sugar on top is what caused the top to get too dark (well, burn, actually).

If you use cornstarch, in your apples, it will thicken the sauce. I like the sauce the best. I think on the whole it looks good, for a pie.

I feel like for a gadget to be worth the storage space it uses it must make the cooking process easier than the traditional way or give a much better result. How is this easier or better than popping the pie in the oven? Good video btw!

For a few disturbing seconds I was incredibly worried at how Barry was slurring his words and wobbling around. Was it a stroke, too much to drink? Nope-- forgot I had set the playback speed to .75. I can't tell you what a relief it was to realize the error. 🙄

I believe it's burned on top because of the sugar you put on it... Sugar usually burns if it's not stirred ...

Having been an apple knocker from the Okanogan where there beaucop apple orchards from central British Columbia to the Yakima Valley, making apple pie is a cultural thing. Which leads to the question of pre-cooking the filling? Peel, slice Granny Smith apples into a large bowl. Squeeze a lemon over the apples and toss. Add sugar, cinnamon, chopped walnuts, raisins, grated nutmeg and grated cloves. Mix well, add 2-3 tablespoons of flour and a ¼ cup of a Canadian bourbon. Cover with the top crust, wet and crimp edges. Makes a fe small incisions and bake in a hot oven until top crust is golden brown. Remove the pie and cool.

Hello from Maine! That is SO cool! I love pie and this would make is so easy! I think your pie burnt on the top because you sprinkled sugar on it, just my opinion.

My issue with it besides the uneven bake. Is the fact that the sides dont look crimped, just pressed. As for the burning (extra crispy) parts. It's due to the sugar hands down.

Hope they make a deep dish one. lol like a taller peace of Pie. But that looks great. Maybe the sugar is what got too brown, less sugar maybe next time. And Great Gadget Barry.

My family has always used individual pie maker for leftover pies at Christmas. Basically the same as that one only the pies are single serves. We buy premade prerolled puff pastry and then cut up roast dinner leftovers for the filling. I've never used shortcrust pastry just puff pastry. I've also made pancakes and quiche in my pie maker. Ours is called pie magic, I'm from Australia though so I don't know if you can get it in the U.K.

I've never heard of adding blueberries to an apple pie either. But I love blueberries so I guesss that would be tasty. Re: the scorching, maybe you should not sprinkle sugar on top before baking?

SWEET!!! Simmer your apples longer to develop the pectin thickening. Other things: soufflé omelettes, toasted sandwiches, steak, sausages, warming pita pockets, & focaccia might be interesting. Lastly, I'd like to see you pick your favourite, "Fry Bentos" pie and replicate it. Yours beats my LiRen Pie Maker hands down. Cheers.

Did you drain the filling before loading it into the crust? If not, that might be why it was a bit moist.
