...there aren't too many other sounds from modern life that can evoke the same rippling spine chills and horrific gut twisting as those from a failing or failed HDD. *_Especially_* when they occur after a reboot and you realize just how long it has been since your last backup... **shivers**

Brings back memories. I was the guy who was in charge of a TI 990/12 with two DS80 'platter' drives (only 20Mb each!). I used to change heads on those. The head units were the size of a large soup ladle.

Great video ,can you not build yourself a pwm circuit using a relay then set the on/off contacts to short and adjust the frequency of the relay contacts to get around what you need .that way you get 10 20 or 50 short contacts per second .or do you need to hold the short state for a time to work just an idea if you do this procedure regularly.

That's so funny, I've been watching your vids, since I've always been super fascinated with low-level hardware access, and I just now realized that you're about ten minutes from my house! I live in Vanier. Internet is such a huge place, and yet sure enough, I end up watching vids of someone who lives here in Ottawa. If ever you give live demos, please let me know.. I'll bring some Timmie's. :) Cheers

Very useful video. I had a seagate SSHD drive start clicking on me about 6 months ago, it still worked but I was worried. Luckily it was covered under warranty still. I sent it in to seagate and got a replacement only a couple days later. I now have a 2tb WD Green drive that works, but it clicks every 10 seconds pretty much on the dot. Luckily, I replaced it with a 6tb WD Black drive this week. I'm going to reformat that 2tb drive and see if the clicking stops. Just found your channel today and subscribed, your videos are very helpful. Thank you for the content.

I also did a little googling and found that it's most likely the heads trying to park. This drive is not within warranty anymore unfortunately, but 2tb drives are cheap nowadays.

Does that mean the HDD recovery is becoming a thing of the past? Or has the HDD progressed so that it no longer possible for third party repair? Are He filled 18TB HDDs impossible to repair now? Wishing you continued success!

Thank you SO MUCH for providing them, i am technically interested and have been all my life. I would just like to know if you might be able to share some insight as to how one starts off in the Data Recovery business as i would love to start up here in Aus but don't know what to buy first. i have basic tools ie dmm, soldering iron, magnification fluro loop lol, all types of screw driver bits etc. Basically just after a heads up on what to get and how to learn. i have learnt quite a bit from a few online tubers so far and SOME experimentation here but i don't want to go wrecking customers drives starting out. Thanks so much mate and i always look forward to your posts!!

I tried about 30 or 40 times last week to get the right moment to short one of these, eventually got it :) Nice vid man. So, there was no media damage on this drive, patient heads looked OK, so just a bad preamp then? Do you first try disabling heads in ROM, or go straight for the headswap?
@hddrecoveryservices
@hddrecoveryservices 7 лет назад
Nick Parsons yeah I think this one took at least 20-30 attempts :) I trust the microscope for inspection of heads. They will reveal if there is any platter damage, and then I decide to clip and cut from ROM if needed. If the head stack looks good I go for the swap. I try not to take a risk on partial recovery via head disabling on these, just to avoid the risk of potential platter damage during the imaging. As you know if he had is filthy, even when disabled, it can and most likely will create some ruckus on that platter side. This case went smooth overall. Specially after head adaptive import

So this exact model I have was in a external case. I had a power outage and it formatted the harddrive into .RAW format. I took the case out and plugged it directly into my computer because via USB would not work. I used easeus Data recovery software and was able to get most of the data to appear in the software but at the time I did not have another harddrive to switch it over. Now, the harddrive will never connect/be recognized by the computer. It turns on, spins, and does not make odd sounds. Disk manager doesn't list it, Bios doesn't either, I can not find drivers for this harddrive. I can not get the harddrive to connect so I can do recovery. I fear the harddrive is dead dead. Do I have to just do what you did in this video and get a exact model harddrive that is healthy and start switching out the parts in hope that it fixes it? Just so I can recovery it all to another harddrive that isn't this god awful product by seagate. Thanks if you reply.

I have the same drive (ST3000DM001) that began to fail suddenly and now is clicking the same way. It showed a few thousand reallocated sectors and I was attempting to remap them but gave up and now the drive is not detected in the bios. I opened it up and verified the heads were not stuck. I was thinking about ordering a donor drive to swap head assemblies. Will this require terminal work and rechanneling the drive? Not sure if its possible to just swap the assembly only or not? The data is not critical but its worth 50 bucks to me. Great video BTW!

PC3K UDMA would be a great start man make sure you get Data Extractor with it otherwise its useless for data recovery. I bought 5 of these drives as backup to my RAID. The only time they got used was when I filled the drive from my RAID, then left it to one side for when I ever need to restore my RAID if the RAID ever failed. A year later I needed to recover my RAID and tried to offload all my data from the Seagates. All 5 drives failed like this and Seagate claimed they were all out of warranty. Now I don't buy Seagate ever again. They are the worst manufacturer of hard drives I have ever come across. How they can make drives which don't even last the time it takes to read off all data just once is beyond me. How are they still in business?
@scottwhittier5861

I used to be a Seagate fan boy.. I've bought hundreds of their drives over the past 15 years. I would tell everyone that their drives were the only reliable drives available. (Going all the way back to the SCSI days) After buying 7 of these ST3000DM001 drives and having all but 1 fail I will never buy Seagate again. They have permanently lost me as a customer. And their response to the ST3000DM001 debacle has been to sweep it under the rug. Worst company ever. Now I go out of my way to tell everyone to never buy from this company.

Seagate has their own Data Recovery Service. I wonder if they have their own backdoor commands to unlock the drive. I doubt they have to go through the same hack of shorting the terminal read pins which is different for every pcb.

sometimes it is not necessary to open the case to manually position the needle.. the problem may be in the power supply or in the connectors under the pcb, which oxidizes with time... you probably know that ( as i can see, you have a lot of hdd there on your shelf to be fixed ) let me ask you a question ? don't you worry about dust sitting on top of the disk while they are open ? your environment is far from being perfect for handling this type of device.... On the other hand, I heard that when the drive is spinning, the dust or any particle just goes away. anyway... nice video anyway !!!
