My grandmother would make this candy every year at Christmas time. She passed away many years ago and I never got the recipe. So, thank you! I will definitely add this to my list of Christmas goodies to make for family and friends.
Thank you for your recipe! I did a single recipe and goofed it up. I forgot to add the Karo corn syrup to the recipe and ended up with a sugary, crumbly candy, 3 rolls of it, Lol! That was Sunday. Come Monday I looked up what Karo syrup does to candy. It prevents the crystallization of sugar. I figured I had nothing to lose and put 2 rolls into a pot with the remaining 4 ounces of evaporated milk and 2-4 tablespoons of Karo. I cooked it to the softball stage and put it out on oiled parchment paper. It worked!!! The candy was rolled and ended up firm but with a nice soft caramel texture and oh so delicious. I was so glad I was able to recover it. I have pictures but not sure how to add them to this message. Either way, thank you for the recipe.
Thank you so much ! I’ve been wanting this recipe! Thank you for showing us how to determine the stages of the candy with the water. We may not always have a candy thermometer around and it helps keep the tradition alive .
Good afternoon, Pray all is well with you and your family today. I am going to have the BEST Christmas ever with having your awesome recipes. My husband loves everything I make from your videos, he is grateful haha. Have a very blessed day.
My favorite candy at Christmas time, Granny would give boxes of the date nut roll all sliced up into rounds I'm going to try and make some Great job on All that 🍬 Thanks and Merry Christmas from Tennessee
You are welcome. I'm sending out boxes of candy to family and friends for Christmas. Sounds like your Granny and I had that in common. Let me know how your date roll turns out. Merry Christmas from Alabama!
God I love you...your the sweetest love your Love of Family and the way you explain everything..I cherish all my Grandmas dishes silver! Your recipe is the best ❤
Thank you for sharing. I pray the sweet Holy Spirit comforts your family with the passing of your aunt. I enjoy watching your cooking. Can you tell me what vanilla you use?
Do you constantly stir the candy until it comes to a boil? After it comes to a boil do you occasionally stir it or not stir it? Every time I make candy it turns to sugar immediately. Thank you
You do realize that when making fudge or making date nut roll candy that if you take it past the point of getting it out of the pan and it does harden up which that has happened to me before you can fix it! All you have to do is put it back on the stove at lower Heat at about a half of a cup of milk or a half of a can of milnot and bring it back up to temperature again
@@southalabamacooking3980 just make sure if you have to recook it that you don't go as high on the temperature as about normal go ahead or less, and I don't understand why you won't spend $5 and go ahead and get a decent thermometer actually probably about $25 but that old softball method can run anywhere from a 235° up to about 250°, somewhere in that 15° range is where you want to shut off the heat but I like to make sure that if I'm making fudge or date nut candy that I turn the heat off at no higher temperature than 243°, softball temp starts at about 240 and I believe it goes up to 250°, so why not use a candy thermometer to make sure you get the right temperature instead of trying to play with it on your fingers in a bowl of water, you know that method went out of style around the turn of the 20th century LOL yep about a hundred years ago
@@robertrichards9275Part of the joy of heirloom recipes is doing them exactly how we watched our great grandmothers, grandmothers, and mothers do them. If it’s what you grew up doing then you have the process worked out to a T tho so we don’t need candy thermometers. We can usually do them blindfolded. lol Traditions are traditions for a reason😉
