I just put a storm door in my front door and it’s the best thing I have done lol. I now keep the front door open and I have a bird feeder right there and I sit and watch the birds while I have my coffee. It has improved my mood so much having all that light streaming in and seeing the birds ❤ I could never go back to not having it now lol
I find it so funny that you don't like screen doors. They let the fresh air in! I love it when the cools or warms enough to open the windows and doors for the fresh air. But the screens keep the critters out!
My front door doesn't have a portico, so without the storm door it would take a beating from the rain and snow. It also helps me save on my energy costs. I live in a townhouse so I only have one window in the living room so the storm door can act as a second window when I want more light.
We just had our kitchen fireplace and mantel painted black. I cant believe how much it has changed the entire space!! Sherwin Williams "Tricorn Black." Stunning!
@@AqsoulX The one in the kitchen is gas. We have one in the entry way that is double sided so you can enjoy it when in the living room too and it is also gas. the family room has a wood burning fireplace. In the winter it really keeps the house warm if we lose power.
I love you guys but was definitely insulted when you said that lvt makes your house look cheap. I think it made our house look 100 times better at an affordable price. We have 7 children and could not afford to put in wood. This was a great compromise. In fact, when I look at your floors, it looks a lot like my lvt floors!
I have to disagree with screen doors. In the summer, we have to have screen doors. I live on a farm with a walnut orchard. Took my screen door off and left the door open for air - went to do something out in our field only to come in and fine chickens having a siesta in my house. I put the screen door back on.
Aluminum screen doors are hideous. I agree. BUT, I have a 132-year-old house and I installed an old-fashioned wooden screen door at the back leading onto my deck. I love it! It suits the house. It lets fresh air in, especially during those horribly humid days we get. It's perfect. As for wall-to-wall carpeting, I couldn't agree with you more. And if you're moving into a place that has it, you're inheriting all the food spills, pet smells, and other nasty things! I worked in rental housing and I can tell you, no one wants it. Allergies too! Nice floors with a beautiful area rug -- that's the ticket!
I’d been hoping the moth balls joke would resurface! Your home is so fresh and it makes me take in a deep breath of calm every time I see that gorgeous lounge room. I’m sure it’ll never become dated. I heard Peter Walsh say that if a room is cleared, a kid will dance or run around it but we don’t do that as adults. Best argument for decluttering ever made! 😊
I like current interior and exterior paint trends, like what you mentioned, with antiques, vintage and contemporary. Recently, I’ve done my home like this from homeworthy inspiration. My guests really, really, enjoy it and keep looking around with compliments
This video belongs to Jack! A spanking new house with the latest stuff would still be dull without fresh and lively inhabitants. Jack’s spontaneous humor, your evergreen chemistry and the way Jack always looks at you, are what keeps you Fussells, not fossils. Jack has legit earned his own video segment, “Fussell humor”. You can have a separate video on interior design jokes which can later be put together into a coffee table book. Stay happy and blessed, always!
I just bought a new chair. Now I see the need to update my sofa and loveseat, even though it is a transitional style. I still love the color of these pieces. I know I will eventually replace older furniture. If I don't, l will definitely have a stager change my home to a more modern look if we decide to sell. We are in our 60s and probably won't live here forever, although I love my home. I spoke to a woman today who had to clean out and sell her 91 year old father's home where he and his wife had lived for 40+ years. It was a very draining job. We will face doing something similar when my 91 year old father in law passes. 30 year old home, never updated but maintenence was covered. I think about my own children and don't want them having to face 30+ plus years of clutter, stuff, etcetera. Gotta purge as we go, too.
We're also in our 60s. This past spring, I was right in the middle of decluttering and painting my house so we could prepare to move to Texas to be near our daughter - then, my dad passed. I had to stop working on my own home and had to unload my mom's house which was a nightmare, so I could get her to assisted living. That about killed me. I'm finally getting back to working on my own home, but going through all this with my parents' home, I'm ruthless now on decluttering and downsizing my possessions.
Diana, I feel your pain. When I had to go through my mom's house, my childhood home, it was heartbreaking. She and my dad only did the maintenance but not any remodeling. My grandpa commissioned the building of that home and my grandparents' former home next door. Quite by accident, I found buyers, or they found me. They needed a quicker possession than I was ready for. I didn't have to do any cleaning or updating as we arrived at a price that was in line with what 2 realtors had estimated. We didn't even contract the sale through a realtor. It was sold to adult children of people I knew as a teen. That helped me let go of the house. But stuff went into storage for way too long!!
Talking about the vinyl tiles. How do you think hardwood floors would hold up to 9 pets and 3 large tanks of fish? I needed water proof floors. So, I went with a light gray concrete looking tile. Sounds awful! But, when people come in...they love my home. It's cozy peaceful and calm. As well as beautiful.
I always keep in mind that these design tips are extremely broad and won’t work for everyone. Hardwoods are amazing, in general, but definitely aren’t a great choice for everyone. I chose wall to wall waterproof, vinyl plank flooring in my home years ago and it’s been amazing. It held up wonderfully when my kids were young, when my three poodles were pups. Now that my kids are off to college and my dogs have settled down, we’re in the process of installing maple hardwoods. Both choices are fantastic. It all depends on your lifestyle.
I sell luxury homes and many customers prefer the luxury planks because of the same reasons. Plus, they can change them out after 5+ years as they cheaper than dealing with MDF or wood floors. Some of the luxury vinyl planks nowadays look so darn good.
Our house will be 30 years old in January. We bought it in 2000, over the years we have done sooo much! Got rid of the wall to wall carpet (tile floors), replaced the door hardware from gold to brushed satin, painted entire house inside and out, remolded both bathrooms and kitchen (between 2018-2021). And we’ve done so much more. Our house does not look like it’s true age!!
Not mad about anything in this video - all true! Even though my house still suffers some of these aging issues, I can't deny the truth of your advice here! Thanks for another great video. (Altho I just remembered - I'm an old librarian, so now Jack is in trouble for his glasses on a chain remark!)
This modernizing you did was done with true fashion sense and knowledge from your knowing what to do & how to do it.❤ I live outside of the Suburban area of Seattle ,Washington just above a beautiful lake and since I'm wheelchair bound and I have a service dog, daily I travel around the blocks I'm surrounded by and I've also noticed changes some good; some just awful and two of them I'm sharing now.. One an older home, that was my fave in my neighborhood went on the market ...It was a wonderful white home with a white picket fence and a wonderfully curated rock garden behind the cute fence. it was a house I loved to go by daily ..they tore out the fence, took all the gardens out😢 so it's lost its charm and painted it an ugly dark blue that ruined it's appeal ..Now,.funny thing one of my sons also purchased a home and they too updated or aged backwards & they also painted it a deep dark grayish blue color and redid almost everything ,the deck, the colors inside and out ,added a above ground pool, updated inside and outside carefully , but kept the plant life and enhanced their homes appeal and the neighborhood equity went up not down Because they put the soul in, they didn't destroy it by modernization that took away those characteristics that make it beautiful like tearing trees down and ripping out all the gardens😢 Thought I needed to say something as there are those who don't know the difference between the destruction of a homes beautiful character and the enhancement of a homes character...😢 My sons home is valued at now one million; but this neighborhood house 😢 whoever purchases it in the future will 😢 have to put back in the character because the present person whose remodeled has destroyed it's equity> lowered its value, as well 😢 Sadly, its beautiful estectics 😮 were all torn out, and it probably when purchased again or resold which had value, now its been stripped bare and if I were an appraiser the equity was lost in that remodeling of that home and when they go to sell it again its value now has dropped drastically so aging a house backwarda like n in your case is an art form and the beauty of it can be destroyed if done wrong. My sons house tripled in value upon resale, the neighbors house lost its value by bad choices. So if it was bought at say $799 thousands now they won't get that ,if lucky maybe $300 thousand which meant it was devalued with all the new ownerships demolition and it's cost-effective ideas 😢 of ripping out trees & costly gardens that took years to curate and they were like those homes you love to visit. Since seeing that just maybe you could discuss on a video that factor < because everyday I'm reminded 😢 sadly these things matter and daily it grieves me to see this, daily reminders ASAP nowadays the importance of how to do something right when making choices >>>so if someone doesn't know the difference please hire, those who really know how to improve property inside and outside because sadly many people ruin equity with bad choices daily.
Disagree on the screen door. LOVE mine! I can leave the front door open and have the glass down for fresh air and my dog is safe and can look outside but not get out and people can't open the screen and come in!
This was such a great video to watch. I loved how you guys show how much of a team you truly are. I giggled the entire time. I do adore your content of design and personal style and have given me great content to revisit while designing my own spaces here at home. Please keep producing this type of content because I absolutely love it!
Totally agree. And one does have to challenge ourselves also. And a tip. I always buy second hand, but designer furniture, I get the same money for the furniture when I sell it as when I bought it. It has been a lot of trial and error. I have a smaller home (Europe) and the wall color can change the whole room.
Love it! I’ve never been sure if your house chose you or you chose the house. In Australia builders still tile about 3ft of the area next to a glass sliding door along the lounge room. My home has carpet for the lounge but around it is wood floor. To walk straight from the hall to the dining room you have to shift your position so you’re not walking on the lip of the carpet defining the lounge.
I live in Australia and my husband and I go looking at new homes all the time and most of them now have either tiled floors or wood flooring with just the bedrooms carpeted but some don’t even have any carpet, we ripped up all our carpet except for our main bedroom which we’re considering replacing it with tiles as well and just having rugs under our furniture, what you’re describing about the little bit of tiled area near the door was probably done in the 90’s because that’s what our home had when we first purchased it and it was the first thing we got rid of and it was only at our front door entrance. 😊
My husband swears by the magic of moth balls to prevent pests whilst storing our luggage and try as I might I couldn’t convince him how offensive the odor was. We took said luggage to Vegas with us and while we were sitting on a hotel transfer bus , a lady gets on and says loudly how the bus smells like mothballs!!! I was hyperventilating from laughing. 😂 We have never used mothballs since.
I’m in an older home and i love it over time we’ve brought it current that big wooden chunky stair banisters had to go for a more sleek modern vibe!!! I I’ve modern cottage i didn’t know it was a thing till you mentioned it modern meets warmth that’s what my home exudes🙂great video
I’m choosing my upgrades with the builder next month. I love the idea of the walls & moldings all one neutral color. What color flooring would you recommend to go with lighter walls? Originally, I was thinking wider plank wood in the natural color, but I’m wondering if I should go a little darker?
You need screen doors! Like you need screens for windows ! Just let any and everything up in your house. A nice screen is jewelry to the home. It's the nose to your face. 😅😅😅
I love y’all, but I’m on a fixed income due to health issues and could only afford LVP flooring. It looks like wood and guests have favorably commented about the look. I can do some things to update my 2005 built home, but I’m not going to stress about it because life is too short to feel bad about the blessing of being a homeowner.
I am a 64 year old woman living alone with 4 indoor cats. What fabric would you recommend. I need a 86- 90 inch sofa and 2 accent chairs for my space in my condo. I’ll take all advice from listeners too!!! Thank you ❤
I don’t have cats but I’m thinking maybe a leather couch and chairs with a couple of throw rugs, that way no hair will stick to the fabric of the couch and chairs and you can wash the throw rugs when needed, I could be wrong but that’s what I’d probably have and there’s some lovely looking leather couches around now, I’m pretty sure V has shown some on her channel. 😊
Another great video! I recently downsized from a custom home to a townhome. I wish I could change the front door. It’s solid black wood with a glass black screen door. HOA so they all have to match. The glass door lets in light (only 1 small window on the front main floor) so I have the door open all the time. But I hated people seeing in so I added fluted film for privacy and now at least it looks a little more modern. If I had my choice I’d put in doors like yours (modern). Thanks for the tips and laughs!
Loved this video!! Both the tips and the family moments! Your front door area is gorgeous! Which maple tree is that and how do you care for it? Also please which edging rock is that peeking up from the sidewalk? Thank you for this video!!❤
My ex wanted to keep the stained timber window frames the same and I wanted to paint them, and keep the shed the same colour when extending it. I wanted it a natural colour and paint the rest the same colour. Best thing I did when painting the lounge was to spend $45 on new plain trim to replace the old fashioned trim that kills your upper arms where it is on an outside corner.
We have a 90’s home saturated with the oak of the past. I have no idea where to start as it’s overwhelming so I have tried to update everything else in hope to make it feel better.
Can you paint the interior doors/trim in matte when color drenching or do those things need to be in the eggshell? I have some doors and trim I’m thinking about painting myself since it’s so expensive to have a painter do it but I’m a little afraid I’m going to ruin them 😬
The hubby and I are at odds regarding the glass/screen door. We have a beautiful, black, front door with a white glass door blocking it. I DESPISE IT. The husband loves it. I told him I’m taking it off to paint it black to match the front door. In reality, I’m just never going to put it back on. Let’s see if he ever even notices 😂😂😂
I agree! I removed every bit of carpet and now have hardwood floors on all levels! I also on one of your last videos stopped the video and took off my screen doors going out onto my deck and it was the best feeling ever! I absolutely love it, so much natural light. No regrets!
What do you do if your on a fixed income and can't afford hardwood floors .I want to get rid of my carpet, but on a slab and I don't want tile.Is good luxury vinal that bad?
I can tell you that I replaced 18 year old carpet with luxury vinyl tile by Coretec. I had homes that had hardwood floors that we refinished. Hardwood (at any age) is hard on the feet, and uncomfortable to stand on for long periods of time as one prepares a meal. My vinyl floors have a cork backing that makes it much nicer to walk on with shoes or barefoot. And wow, what an update it was from carpet that lived through a family of four as children grew up. When we replaced carpet for LVT, my and my children's allergies practically disappeared.
??? If you want to put in wood floors and have a toilet, bathroom and laundry at the end of the hall, it is ‘cool’ to put in a tile that looks like wood that is a close match to wood floors? Haven’t heard anyone love wood tile but I don’t think the modern ones look bad at all.
I live in South Florida and have been told not to install real wood floors in the homes as they warp and mold from humidity. Everyone here always installs luxury vinyl to achieve the same look. Now you say it’s cheap and icky. So if one doesn’t want tile then what?
I agree with painting the exterior, but landscaping can date a home too. Horticulture has come a long way since the 90’s, and large green blobs of bushes don’t look modern to me.
This is probably one of your best videos ever. I agreed with most of it, except for the glass/screen door. Some people have small kids or pets. This can be a security door on those cases. Love my woods floors where I reside now, but in the tropics, tile is the way to go. #CommingBackFan
