Absolutely stunning works. Thank you so much for showing the vessels as well as the feet. The foot areas are usually hidden from view but are in fact so important for revealing the potter's finishing skills. I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Bravo!

I love seeing the details of the bottoms of antique pieces, and unfortunately many books and articles from the past have excluded this; and I have often wondered "what does the bottom look like ? " So interesting . Thank You very much for doing this, and also for including detailed commentary as well .

Wow, very informative, I noticed the white bowl at 6:05 minute marker was from 1506-1521 but the bottom of it looked so new, hardly any discoloration, that one fooled me, it looked newer I might have passed it up as a modern replica, but I'm learning.

The edict of around 1677 or 1687 by the Kangxi Emporer of not using his reign mark was very short lived and rarely if ever enforced. A reign mark on a period example does not always mean it's an Imperial piece, but simply made in that period. To determine an object's age, the last thing you should examine is the mark. Shape, color, glaze, paste and quality of decoration always comes first.

When I first got into ceramics before I started with porcelain I did some things like a couple ginger jars that were fired and then we carved Dogwood blossoms on to the ginger jar but I also did canisters is a wedding set for someone and all the lids in the first firing which we called a bisque firing all the lids had to be on each piece so that as they were fired and formed the hardened ceramic peace they would fit correctly... None of these have any glaze on and that first firing otherwise they would have been sealed shut I'm sure you know all this but maybe it helps other people that read the comments like I do after watching a video

I just found your video and really enjoyed it. I need your help. I inherited a Chinese porcelain bowl (with the foot) and have no idea of the age nor value. It is in excellent condition and has the blue and white colors, with a Chinese man and image inside the bowl, plus designs around the outside. It also has Chinese markings on the bottom. Can you help me identify this piece, age, and value if I send pictures? If so, let me know where to email pics. Thank you so much.

How did this Ming china get to America? I'm assuming via the traders of the 16th and 17th centuries. In the early trading days didn't they use china as ballast?

this is a wonderful video... i need something more fundamental as in how do i tell chinese pottery from others and how can i tell the age of the piece. i have some black clay pierced and cut vases that i think are very old. in a search i did years ago i found an exact piece to one i have and it was part of a missing cargo box of old chinese yangze river pottery. can't find the article anymore. is there any way to post pieces and have them evaluated?

@Peter Combs Hello. I was wondering if you could please assist me in dating a piece of Chinese porcelain. It's a cobalt on white, plumb shaped vase - medium sized. It has 5 dragons all around the vase and they seem to be chasing a sun. There are clouds in the details, as well as ocean waves at the base. If you put your hand inside, you can feel the "ribs" of the clay, going round in a circle, from top to bottom. The piece also has pitting marks on it. the base is unglazed around the rim and the very small lid that would go on the vase is missing. Any suggestions? Please advise. Thank you so much in advance. PS There are no marks on the bottom of the piece. However, there is a collector's stamp - a sticker that was put inside a typewriter, which reads "Made in Canton". Photos available upon request.

wow! this video is a real education! it does leave me w/ a zillion questions though. how was that tea-dust glaze done? has it ever been copied? the details on all of these pots are so incredibly perfect in so many ways. a very advanced aesthetic and skill level. but at the same time, i yearn for thick, fat, inelegant, but fearless experimentation in spanish provincial majolica of the 19th and early 20th century. the stuff that inspired Picasso. it's kind of the opposite of this. HUGE bowls and plates w/ very simplified designs, done forcefully and confidently using bold colors.

I'm curious as to why they fired it upside down. How did they keep the glaze from sticking to the Kiln Shelf. That's why a lot of porcelain has that room on the bottom that doesn't have any glaze on because it would stick to the kilm whenever melted when the piece was fired. I made antique reproduction porcelain dolls and a few other porcelain items... So I have my own Kiln Exedra so I was just wondering about the firing process

Hello Kevin, the box while it was of very good quality and well decorated, it was not on a par with what you'd expect to see on a Qianlong mark and period example. As for the mark, it has some rather classic errors seen often on 19th C. examples. Compare it closely to known authentic examples and you'll see what I mean. If you have trouble distinguishing them, email me and I'll send along some images for comparison. Thanks! Peter Our eMail info is on both Bidamount.com and plcombs.com under "CONTACT US"
