Johnny and Kevin, you both are so genuine. Johnny, when you spoke about representation of homosexual relationships in children's programming and your neice, it literally gave me chills. Just yesterday, with my nine year old, my mom was talking about my daughter's future relationships and my mom said "your husband..." and then my daughter chimed in and said "or wife." That was a very proud moment because she doesn't see either negatively and knows she has the clear choice to be with whoever she wants. That's all because of the groundwork I have laid for my kids. It all begins with parents, not even media, it's what the parents MUST teach their kids. Inclusion and empathetic acceptance of all is our only future. I felt so bad for not commenting on your last episode, which was fantastic! Sending you both and Casey lots and lots of love.❤

We need to normalize love whether it's between straight, gay, bi or whatever. I told my 14 year old daughter that it doesn't matter what people's gender is, if they truly love each other that's what matters and we need to respect that with no judgement.

Reminds me of that quote from the 1940s; “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out-because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out-because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me-and there was no one left to speak for me.” -Martin Niemöller This is why it’s so important that we all speak out against oppressive legislation, no matter who it’s directed at.

39 minutes to about 40:29? Amazing! I'm a straight woman and I've never had issues with someone's love choice have always felt this way. The way you worded this deserves an award, and hopefully makes people realize and sympathize for the people who are gay and how hard it is growing up not seeing this and having that war inside!

wow this was such an amazing conversation, as a gay person sometimes you feel like you don't have whom to have these type of conversations. I feel like if you are able to have a gay friend who doesn't have an agenda with you, it's really cool to just have someone who you can share everything with and just be yourself and can relate to. Your friendship is honestly goals.

Johnny, your passionate arguments around the 40:00 mark / your family’s perspective of your niece’s comment abt two boys together just hit me in the heart. I share your exasperation frustration and devastation at being misunderstood, then gaslit into thinking you’re overreacting cause “everyone has it hard, everyone feels that way, alone in the world, not seen, etc from time to time” and then being left by yourself to turn inward and shrink. Just my stream of consciousness. I empathize with the anger. Love this session you guys ❤

It’s so heartbreaking that we live in country and even a world where people will band together more often to tear each other down and hurt each other than to love and support each other. I totally agree with what you said Johnny about legislation wanting to ban drag shows and making people who are gay feel they need to hide in the name of protecting kids, but it’s straight people who are the majority abusers of kids. And women are being oppressed as well when they are being told what they can and can’t do with their own bodies. This world would be a much better place if everyone would work more on supporting each other and acting out of love. God said love your neighbor as you love yourself and love Him with your whole heart. Not spread hate and misinformation and tear each other down. This was another great episode y’all. 💝

I had to pause at around 9 minutes in because of what you, Johnny, said about not sure if you're gay or just like confused. IDK if y'all have read Adam Rippons book, it's been awhile since the last winter Olympics, but you should! He took was unsure and loved his gf's while skating together, etc and finally realizing everything about himself and how much him and his Mom sacrificed to get him to the Olympics. Johnny and kevin- I’m really grateful you were willing to open up about your experience. Mom of a toddler here, I’m definitely going to think about ways to make my sons upbringing more inclusive in every way and You gave me lots of good thoughts about representation. We do watch miss Rachel on RU-vid and she’s gotten a ton of flack for one of the cast members being nonbinary and using they/them pronouns. It’s absolutely insane to me- especially as they are my sons favorite person!! It’s a music channel and I really believe music is the universal language. The fact that THATS what people focus on, I’ll never understand. Miss Rachel teaches kids that they are kind smart and important, and she means all kids. Don’t really have much of a point to this comment except thanks for sharing as I’m sure it’s not easy to share these things but please know there are people watching who you’re impacting!!

My sister & male cousin both came out while my children were toddlers. I raised them to accept people as God made them because being gay is how they were made (it's who they are, not a choice). Aunt Kris likes girls and Uncle Steven likes boys. As a parent you never know if they listen but my sister had brought home her girlfriend and my 4yr old daughter asked her in rapid fire "What's your name? Are you Aunt Kris's girlfriend? Can I call you Aunt R___? (they aren't together anymore so I want to respect her privacy) The girlfriend said yes, my daughter said cool and ran off to play. My ex's family were homophobic and my fear wasn't that my children would be gay but disowned by their father & grandmother. While on a blind date I had seen these cute shoes and said "Girl, cute shoes" before looking up and it's a young man in drag and I was afraid I had insulted them. They said thank you and didn't seem bothered at all so I asked if the shoes were comfortable? They frowned so I guess they weren't. I had more fun taking shoes and clothes with her than I did my blind date, very happy I drove my own car to the restaurant!

Love you both, I want to caution against calling foreign foods “weird” even if it’s a texture or flavor that you really don’t like. Many Southeast Asian cultures use almost every part of an animal in recipes due to historical poverty and inequality rooted in colonialism. That means eating parts of the animal that many Western diets don’t care for. As an Asian American, it’s hurtful when people call your comfort foods “weird” or “gross.” If it’s not for you, that’s totally fine, but there are better ways to talk about foreign foods. No shade, adore you both! ❤

It's a shorter way of saying "I feel weirded out by it / it's gross to me." People are allowed to express their dislikes of certain foods. I'm sure there are plenty of American foods they find weird and gross, too. Don't take it so personally. Not everyone has to like the same foods and it doesn't mean they're attacking you.

I dont think he was intentionally trying to disrespect Vietnamese food. Unfortunately it was just a bad experience for him. You are entitled to feel how you feel. There is nothing wrong with your reaction. As a person of African Descent there is quite a bit of negative comments surrounding the traditional foods the Black people eat. I understand I'm very sorry that you were hurt by his comments. I find these hosts to be very mindful and cautious in their wording regarding others. I live in Cali. Vietnamese fooed is very popular here I've had Pho. I enjoy Vietnamese food. I dont think he was demeaning the totality of Vietnamese food, he just had a bad experience...

Thank you for saying this! Not only to Southeast Asian food but all food from all cultures should not be labeled as "weird" or "gross". I think instead of "weird" or "gross" I would say something like "it's not to my liking" or "I'm not used to it" or "it's an acquired taste for me". :))

My son who is 21 now would stand up for the community at 10. He told his after school teacher at a local church that homosexuality was natural and that people are born who they are and we should love them. Isn't that what Jesus would do? I was such a proud Mama. That was a rough time for him too because he found out my best friends couldn't get married because they were two men. He said "Mama if I want to grow up and marry a man I should be allowed to do that."

I have a five year old son and it has opened my eyes even more to the issues you’ve brought up. My son told me he wished he was a girl so he could wear nail polish and it broke my heart. My mom sat him at her little nail vanity and gave him 10 different colours he picked out for each nail. He said lots of kids liked it but some kids told him that it was for girls and he told them no they can have some too. He watches inclusive content, gender stereotypes don’t matter to him when we go to the toy store, but still comes home from kindergarten with the idea he can’t do something because of his gender and like you said I doubt any of the adults at his school explicitly say that but it’s just what he sees day to day there. He goes to a public school with staff and children of all backgrounds but the content that’s used in schools is pretty much what I was exposed to in the late 90s early 2000s still. I’m catching up on the podcast so Happy Pride, it was a nice start to the month listening to this today ❤

I really love how honest Johnny and Kevin are in this. I went through a “h0e phase” too, it was on and off, but was consistent right after a guy I loved (and I didn’t hook up with) ran for whatever reason. It messed with my head how while we only met in person twice, he still kept in touch with me for a year and talked about everything with me, including his grandparents and his vision for the future, but could back out so quickly with zero explanations other than “I’m a private person”. During this phase, I relate so heavily to Kevin in how I’d find the driest people hoping for something magical, but end up feeling even emptier inside. I just felt like there was no one with any sexual preference who would want anything longer than like a week with me. That feeling isn’t completely gone, but now I’m just happy in this point in my life having friends and family who care.

After years of it (I started my senior year of highschool and didnt really stop until sophomore year of college) and I was abroad in Spain for school that whole time, truly alone. Completely appropriate that today I can thank my mom for exposing me to and normalizing in the 80s and 90s different people with all different expressions of love. I completely understand your references though, when I was 7 we were "fired" from our babysitter because my mom was going to expose us and therefore her and all the other kids to AIDS because my mom had multiple close gay friends. Disgusting. I can't believe the current steps backwards that are trying to be implemented around this country. Like, I actually had the delusion we had mostly come out the other side of this bigotry. as much fun as your high energy makeup focused eps can be, this ep is an example of how great you two can be when you get authentic and heavy. It's /almost/ a hard listen because while I have a wildly different queer experience being a late to crack my egg trans person, the alienation from romance you guys describe is still so real and raw. Even in my highschool experience smack in the middle of the 2010s bay area where it was so normalized that no one batted an eye at queer couples, I was completely disconnected from that scene since I wasn't attracted to people as the gender I thought I was. Now looking down the barrel of actually being attracted to men as a man, its almost terrifying the prospect of acting on it for the first time in my mid 20s, especially with the complication of being trans thrown in. It's actually fairly reassuring hearing you guys talk about it honestly- awkwardness and discomfort and being a late bloomer is normal and natural, especially in queer circles

It is interesting, my son came out to us in 2008, in the 6th grade. He really expected a huge drama, shock, and tears. We just looked at him and said, "And?" Then shared that we were aware for the last few years that he was indeed gay even at that age. We, both stepdad and I are his biggest advocates and will be forever, it doesn't matter his sexuality, he is our son. I wish all kids could get this same reaction from parents and acceptance.

Oh Johnny, I want to make every more conservative person I know (which is most of the people I know) watch this podcast. My son is a young gay man (23 yo) and very similar to you in so many ways, and I worry over him constantly because of the closemindedness of other people. I've listened to you and Kevin, heard what you've said, and learned SO much from this dialog. I'm 53 and grew up in an environment that was brutal towards the homosexual community. I had friends who were closet gays, but they didn't talk much about what they were going through. Most of the people in my age group are still losing their minds over the effort to represent the gay community in media, and I've had a difficult time figuring out precisely how to retort their fears. I feel that I understand so much more now after listening to this podcast, and I cannot thank you enough. I'm a Momma Bear when it comes to my own son and all of his gay friends, and have been heartbroken to realize how many of these young men have been denied the basic unconditional love even from their parents, but now I better understand how extensive the pain and suffering really are. I sincerely thank both of you for being so incredibly open about your experiences.

Just discovered this podcast and OMG what a good first episode I got recommended, thank you both for talking about LGBTQ+ experiences, heck on the topic of representation shows have been cut off or cancelled or on the bridge of cancelation just for havin a gay character or theme, some of them being Steven Universe and The Owl House which were created BY queer people FOR queer people, things are getting better in terms of that representation but we still have a long way. I don't live in the US but the stuff a certain party is trying to push to criminalize the LGBTQ community is just terrifying, again, we hve a long way to be recognized as people, as human. 🏳️‍🌈

I have never heard it explained or discussed the way you two just did. My heart goes out to you both and anyone else who has had to go through similar stories. I don’t know how I didn’t see this episode until now either. Lol Regardless, I cannot imagine what you have had to endure and I am so proud for you for being your authentic selves despite all the self righteous hypocrites. It takes a brave person to do that. I honestly don’t even think I can say that myself. Anyway, I think you guys are awesome. Keep doing you Boo!

As a gay teen, I feel so fucking seen. I’m in a small city, so I know no matter how attractive or charismatic I am… no one will love me because theirs no men who would want me. I constantly have to hear my girl friends talk about their new crush and how he’s so amazing and handsome. But I always just have to look emptily at these relationships knowing I won’t ever be loved. Then again, being constantly teased for being gay doesn’t help my self esteem or mood much. But I just love having this channel where my shy inner gay can feel comfortable. 💜

I had a best friend who went through the same as you, so when I had my twins (boy/girl), I told them when they were very young. They came home from school at age 5, telling me the other kids said that a woman meets a man and they get married. I assured my 5 year old that a man can love a man and a woman can love a woman! I did not want them to either feel shame if they were gay or had a friend who was gay. They're 24 now and they are so open minded Love you guys

It seems to me that those most upset by LGBTQIA+ are those most insecure with their own sexuality and identity. I agree with you that when kids are exposed to all kinds of relationships, they don't care about non-hetro lifestyles. I grew up with gay family members and love is love. But I notice that those who are repressed are quick to attack. It's really sad for both them and those they attack. The younger generation is much more accepting and it gives me hope for a better future. Great episode this week.

You guys are so so smart and I love your discussions. I like how you present your rational arguments in such a listener friendly way. I was enthralled for your entire podcast. I withdrew my membership from the Methodist Church due to their decision in 2020 to still make unfair legislation against gay marriage. How can a religion that supposedly support love come out as hateful against an entire group of people?

i’m a momma and let me just tell you- if you don’t make something a big deal to your kids, it’s not a big deal. when my son has questions, i answer them. or BEFORE he asks questions, i tell him about life. i have friends who do drag- they’re playing dress up like how we do on halloween, only it’s their job and they get to dress up all the time. who doesn’t want to get to dress up every week instead of once a year? they’re a same sex male couple: they love each other just like daddy and daddy’s gf love each other. when his uncle’s wife was a different color, he didn’t ask questions. but in their house, santa is black and that’s not weird to him. his cousins are mixed and i’ve explained that they’re a mix of both his aunt (very dark skin) and uncle (very pale white) all the kids have different skin tones and he doesn’t think it’s weird. he said someone at school said boys shouldn’t wear makeup but i’ve already told him that the only thing girls can do that boys can’t is have babies. other than that, there is nothing that is specifically for boys or specifically for girls. boys can paint their nails, dye their hair, have long hair, wear as much makeup as they want, wear dresses, wear high heels- the same way that girls can have short hair, wear pants, play with dump trucks, love dinosaurs, play baseball on his team, play video games. things are not gendered, we gender them.

I'm so sorry... I'm happy i lived in a country so most of the political mindset wasn't/isn't a thing... I saw my first drag show at 19... I started working at the national LGBTQ organisation at 19... I started doing makeup for drag queens at 19, i opened a company for drag shows at 20, i started planning The national Pride Parade (from a smaller country) and shows at 21 and was even in the board... I went down with stress at 25, so I paused, and never started again, i got chronically sick, so now I can't anymore... Half of my friends are gay guys... I would take a shot for all of them... I'm a straight woman... But, I talked with gay guys, I knew there was issues (i also worked at the national organisation working against HIV/Aids) so, i started to volunteer... All the things I wrote... Have been 100% volunteer... Some of them I worked part time for money, and full time volunteer... All in this episode... I want to hug you... I'm very sorry... But, I'm proud I have worked helping LGBTQ people be themselves and giving them the space to be them... Love is love... Empathy is the world's most important thing!!!

This episode made me cry. I could just hear the pain in your voices. I hate the state of things right now so much. I wake up everyday afraid that I'm going to get news that something has happened to one of my LGBTAQ+ friends. No one should ever feel such pain just for being themselves.

This is incredible. I am 50 and have only realised how brainwashed we all are from childhood to be straight. I am relieved my kids don't buy any of it, despite their having the usual "is he your boyfriend?" questions that seem innocent but actually aren't. Small kids pairing up is not cute at all, it's weird. It makes me sad that I have friends my age who could not come out until they were in their 20s and could not marry until their 40s and yet they have the best relationships and are wonderful parents

Rewatching your content bc I love you both THAT much 💕 I went to high school in the early 2000’s (graduated in ‘05) and the most well known & liked person in my class was gay. He was student council president, ran all of the dances and fundraisers, put together pep rallies and homecoming, prom…everything. And of course we all knew he was gay - ever since elementary school. (I live in a small town). And he was literally everyone’s favorite person 🥰 the sweetest, most kind human you could ever hope to meet.

I have been living for a long time with a hope that it will get better with time. There are so many things still wrong in the world. By how people see others, what they look like or how they live. My country in Europe is very small and very homophobic. I guess it is partially because of the fact that we have many people with russian roots here. I see that teenagers now are different. They are more free, less judgemental. I always see people for what they can give to others. Many of these homophobes are so empty and basic, that I don't even want to look at them...
