The way that the girl at the beginning measures when she's going to see her dad by the amount of rotations around the sun is profound. Most people would say next year or at the end of the year, etc, but she measured it by the Earth's rotations. It shows how uniquely she sees the world and I hope she never loses that perspective. Kind of blew me away a bit.

My father has been incarcerated since I was 2. I visited him when I was in the 5th grade … and the pain I felt led me to decide that day I would never visit him again. I an 31 years old. He has reached out numerous times over the years but anger and overwhelming emotions kept me from being willing to contact him. This documentary led me to do the work I ran from for years. Tonight, with tears in my eyes… I’ll be writing my very first letter to my Dad.

I am now going to pray for you and your Dad. I know forgiveness is hard. But it is right. And the positive energy from forgiveness surely outweighs the negative energy of unforgiveness. Kudos to your Dad for not giving up on you. He continued to reach out to you knowing how you felt. I pray that the letter you write him leads to you guys physically embracing each other with total love for each other. He has done his time. He paid for his mistakes. Take your time. Move slow. You should have a therapist AND a Pastor as you embark on a new relationship with him. Take care of your mental, emotional and spiritual self because this is big. May God bless the both of you in Jesus Name. 🙏🏾❤️

True fatherhood, especially black fatherhood, is such an important cornerstone in a child’s life that has slowly become eroded in this modern society. These men have made their mistakes, but now they’re being given the chance to see their daughters and impress upon them something more than daddy issues and generational truama. Speaking as a woman who’s father lived less than 2 hours away but couldn’t be bothered to visit or even talk to me after the age of 10, the wound that a fathers absence leaves in your heart and soul is something that will hurt the rest of your life. I’m glad these men are breaking the cycle.

This docu is an emotional masterpiece. Profound and necessary. Some of the fathers hadn’t seen their daughter in 10 years. As the door opened - tears started flowing on both sides. It’s such a reminder about the needs of children and I can’t help but think of the children of some same sex parents that have decided for the child “a father isn’t necessary or any male will do”….Not at all the case. These little ladies recognized their fathers, craved their touch and sound of their voice. 95% of the men who participate in this dance never return to prison (mind blowing. I was a tissue hoarding, eye wiping, knot in the throat having, elated and anticipatory mess the whole time! Bravo to the lady who started this! Bravo to the first warden that allowed it! And Bravo to the mothers who put their feelings aside and got out the way…. Chef’s Kiss all around

Just finished watching this on Netflix and it's truly moving. Jails should encourage more visits like the dance. It truly shows that inmates are more likely to stay out of jail with these programs & touch visitations. I cried through the whole movie thinking of my daughter. Although her father is not in jail, he has no contact with her which is worse because he has no excuse for not being in her life. Daddy's play a big role in how young girls develop, please don't be absent from their lives.

@@christina678 Well, some of us don't have a choice when the father chooses not to be present in our childs life. My daughter had plenty of men role models with my father and brothers showing her the love and respect of a man. I chose not to have another partner until she was grown, you also never know what their intentions are when getting involved with a single mother. And btw I don't really call myself a "single mother" because I was married to her dad and he chose to leave us to chase his dreams, therefore I'm a "sole parent"

My dad chose his own path out of this world when I was 5. I have always considered myself fortunate in that I knew where he was, even if I missed the experience of having him in my life. I feel like kids whose dads are locked away or absent have it far worse - that sense of longing for a parent who you can't hug, can't see, and/or can't rely on has to be exponentially more painful to cope with for a child. Praying for all these families who shared their experiences with the world. Looking forward to this film! And yep I'll be crying my eyes out!

He sold her every pipe dream in emails, letters and phone calls about how he was sorry, wanted to make up for lost time, all the things they’d do etc etc. Sadly that was all to help him past the time then come home and discard of her after using her like he did all those women that also helped him past the time. He goes months without calling/seeing her. I’ve told him on many occasions she acts out in school and he’s unbothered. Didn’t even come see her in the hospital 😢

Watching this made me realize how at 42 I’m still broken and affected by my father’s absence in my life. My father was not/ is not incarcerated, just chose not to have a relationship with me. When I watched this, I cried almost the whole way through. It struck a cord in me just feeling the pain of their absence. The anger, the questions they asked, like ARE YOU GOING TO CHANGE, and the one girl who said she wasn’t going to she’d not another tear if her dad abandoned her again. Seeing the life coach teach these men the importance of fatherhood just touched me and made me wish he could’ve talked to my dad. This is a great watch and I really wish fathers, especially our black men/fathers would take the time to watch this. I don’t believe they understand the impact their absence/ presence have on our lives and how it helps to shape us as women. I immediately prayed after watching asking God for healing and peace in my own life because I didn’t realize how I was still affected. This was powerful and yes little Aubrey, she’s wise beyond her years. Even the way she talked to her dad before she left the prison saying I don’t want to let you go, but we going to take 3 breaths and say see you later, don’t say bye because bye means forever.😩😩😩😩 omg this took me all the way out!!

I cried so many tears just remembering how my daughter was affected. My daughter was also 5 at the time her father went away for 7 years. She’s 26 now and her father has been home since she was 13, but the strain it played and still plays on their relationship is still so painful to see. Its like this...When a baby gets born and the baby turns out to be a girl, the girl will grow up to be a pretty woman and we all know what happens towards pretty women in the end, they will become mothers. Now what happens to the boys who become men? The obvious answer is that they will have to get a well-paying job but check this out. All of the manufacturing/factory jobs have been shipped towards China, Mexico, India, and other third-world countries. What remains nowadays in the United States are these low-paying jobs that always seem to revolve around dealing with the public. These ones seem to be the ones that stuck around after the better-paying jobs got shipped towards those third-world not-so-pleasant countries. The Average Joe and those fellas who are too smart to not "sell themselves short" who also sees this knows for a fact that this is not enough to sustain oneself without living at home with yo parents but what happens next is that the Average Joe and those hustlers out there stay walking the earth looking for something to do…something to get into…a central important thing to be involved in like those sport programs, show choirs, regular spots downtown, social clubs where you can talk about your feelings, etc. After mandatory education/high school comes to an end, there is none of that out there. Is it any wonder how familiar names around your hometown always seem to be getting into trouble with the law…? The reasons explains itself. There is NOT much to do out there….unless you want to turn yourself into a hermit and never go outside and having to put up with the nonsense of the world. There’s a reason why the prison system exists. Its to hold massive amount of the fellas and some women who behave like boys who can’t control their urges/emotions/impulsive nature. I feel for these guys & sympathize with their plight until I get reminded that these were probably the folks who couldn’t sit down & shut up during class for 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week. Its awful how the prisoners HAPPENED to have children but...uh...those women who have children out-of-wedlock by the fellas who's slick with his mouth but can't rub two 20 dollar bills cause working a job for The Man is considered corny are the same ones to be making questionable impulse decisions on the fly without thinking of the future. Those women weren't raped and the folks for a certain time dressed to impress but now they are broke & dusty.

This trailer didn’t make me sad, it made me angry. Those men made choices that will impact those innocent beautiful girls that they will take with them for the rest of their lives. I hope those babies learn to NOT follow in their mothers footsteps and choose better. ❤

How can you say that but in your bio you state u support black women. Attacking the mothers and assuming they “chose” the wrong men. Do you understand that one situation can cause their foundation to fall. Do you honestly think the mothers pick jail birds. Be fr. Regardless of these men, their mothers been holding it down and being a present parent for them. Whatever point u were trying to make sweetie only show how ignorant you are.

@@youtuber5289exactly! & whoever the 🌽🏀 is didn’t even watch the documentary. Just watched the trailer & just swear they know what’s going on. That’s Karen vibes where you just complaining about something but don’t even know what’s going on. The documentary has a great messages yes with a S. You can learn about different things you didn’t even think about instead of swearing you know it all without even seeing the whole thing. That’s how people from the privileged suburban are though. Suburban privileged people need to stay in their lane because they are lost on some things they never experienced or even came close to but assume off watching a trailer that they know what’s going on.

You’re such a hypocrite! But you from the suburbs & not the “sista” you portraying to be. Watch the whole documentary first before you make a comment that has no merit. But you supposed to be about supporting women when a woman is the reason that these men got a chance to see their daughters through that program & 95% of those men through that daughter daddy program never went back to jail. That’s how powerful it is & it’s because of women & the young black girls. But you supposed to be a “sista” You just a Karen. You been exposed.

@starrr432 So, all black men in prison are innocent? Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? The most violent communities in this country are in the urban areas: Chicago, Philly, Oakland, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Houston, Atlanta, etc. I could go on an on. Black men are the ones killing each other in these cities, and then brag about it in gangster rap.

Just finished watching it. That baby was trying to wrap her little head around 7 yrs. But I completely broke when the gentleman spoke whose daughter wasn’t there. The pain he was feeling and the other fathers apologized to their daughters for being there. Cried when one said, “I can’t come back to prison, it hurt” 😢😢😢😢

Excellent documentary and it had me in tears. Fathers we are truly needed in our kids lives and the decisions we make can have a lasting effect on them. I wasn't present consistently in my daughter's life and she let me know when she was an adult. It hurt like hell but I'm glad she was able to open up to me about her feelings. I sent here this Doc to watch as well. Be present fellas 🙏🏾

Everything about this was so powerful. The poetic direction. The emotions, the loss of emotions. The walls, the breaking of walls, the rebuilding of walls. The choice to make a change the realization that those choices lead to harder times. My heart broke for all those children. My heart broke for my younger self that had those same walls and that same attitude toward own father that tried but never hard enough. Contrast that with the starkness of the prison with those hideous video cams as in person visits and it is a reality check that should be a must watch for all young men on a course of destruction.
