After our visit to Fort Morgan we took the ferry ride over to Dauphin Island and then visited the Dauphin Island Estuarium. This is a great place that not only does marine research, but displays marine life that is local to our areas, including the Mobile Bay Delta, Bay, and Gulf.

I love these videos! Though I can do without the gum chewing into the microphone, sorry!

My mistake on the chewing gum. I didn't even realize I was doing it till I watched the video clips. I told Abby "don't let me chew gum anymore!"
@CSkwirl
@CSkwirl 7 лет назад
I was going to say the same thing, been watching this channel a couple of years and appreciate all the videos and work that's put into it, ive learned a bunch and I'm not even a machinist. I don't think I've ever made a negative comment but the chewing was kinda gross. Thanks Adam, hi from Australia.

Abom79 Hi Man, It's great to see where u take us for a day off. As u know all work & no play does make dull a man! There' only Two guys I watch on machining that are any good. You & Joe. Keep it up...Should come one day to Australia.

Abom79 I was going to post a similar comment, the fort and this experience were kind of spoiled by the gum. The very fact that you acknowledge your mistake and pinned it to the top of the comments says it won’t happen again. You are a great machinist and an even better person as far as I’m concerned. Please keep up the great work, but please save the gum for off camera! 👍 Cheers, Graham.

the one following you is a rig supply vessel (ups for the rigs). can also be used to clean small spills. the crane you saw on the platform with the 4 poles, they tow it out next to the rig. then drive the poles into the sea bed then lift themselves up to deck height of the rig to do repairs on them.

...Reminds me of where I grew up in the late 1950's... San Diego and the Coronado Island Ferry....it was already old even back then. You could go down into the engine room and there was a catwalk all the way around....you could watch the engine running with exposed pushrods and rocker arms....engine ran maybe 200 RPM.... The ferry was known as the 'Glass Bottom Boat" it had a couple of big plexi-glass windows on the bottom, and you could see all the fish and ocean floor........

My brother was a First Officer on a big ferry that caries 238 semis. The ferry had twin turbo diesel engines each was 10k+ hp. Route they were frequently taking took 3 days one way and fuel cost per one way was 250k euros. It was pretty brand new ship, everthing had redundancy and automated. The manual control was just a 4" stick, I could not believe it. I guess they just use it to steer away from the automated route and it gets back on course when you let go off it. Ships are pretty amazing thing...

I have always liked ferries. Used to cross the Mississippi R. at Baton Rouge, LA on a steam paddle wheel ferry operated be the highway department until I-10 bridge was opened. Have crossed the Red R. from Oklahoma to Texas on a barge type ferry that was guided by a steel wire rope that was strung from one bank to the other. The guides were two pulley wheels in a triangular frame with a wire rope to a hand winch on the side of the ferry for each guide. They let out cable to tilt the barge to the current to use the current to propel the ferry across the river. My wife and I like to take the ferry from Galveston to Port Bolivar, TX. These ferries are about twice the size of the Dauphin Island ferries and have two pilot houses(one at each end). I have used a ferry that was a barge and propelled by a tug boat. Ferries are an adventure.

The ADSFR is a unique and amazing tournament organized by the Mobile Area Jaycees. In the years I attended (1997-2005) there were about 3,000 fishermen per year. They fish for three days and bring their fish to the weighing station. At that time, there were 30 species categories, so there was a lot of interesting diversity to see - everything from hardhead catfish to tarpons and marlins. In aggregate over the years we saw more than 280 species of fishes - an incredible sample of the diversity of fishes in the Gulf of Mexico. By the way, like other viewers, I always enjoy the videos of your trips with Abby.

Ferries are always a fun break from driving. I've crossed the Mississippi River from Hickman KY to Dorena MO, the Ohio River at Cave-In-Rock IL, and the Danville Ferry over the Tennessee River. Also took the carferry out to Washington Island WI back when I was a kid with my family.

When I saw the ferry I was like, "where is the rest of it?" I am use to the ferries that Run to Seattle from here in Bremerton, the 150 plus car type. I am sure people in other parts of the world would call the Seattle ferries small. Anyway it is a great video. I sure do miss the Gulf of Mexico!

That car ferry must have pod drives. You have not had good fish until you taste Tripletail. There was one in the tank with the redfish. It was dark grey/black fish with 1 tail and 2 adjacent fins that make it look like it has 3 tails hence the name. Sort of looks like a big Bluegill. Great video

Hi Adam 2 things 1) You have a very nice Lady there really beautiful and pleasant face - congrats 2) I live on Vancouver Island and when I first came here really loved the 1 1/2 hour ferry ride - now IT'S A PAIN IN THE BUTT. Used to live in the interior at a place called Nukusp - choice of two ferries in or out but they were quite short and often. Thanks for the Video - Rod
@Abom79

Why did you move to a place where you only have a ferry ride to get out? Just curious is all.
@Newmachinist
@Newmachinist 7 лет назад
I was transferred here. Lots of people think the Island is the berries. In my work (BC Hydro) it was considered the best place to be transfered to. In size it is about 1/3 the size of Great Brittain - really a beautiful place with a population of 750,000. Climate is considered the mildest in Canada. Having said that, because it is on the coast (like Pensacola) it is high humidity so it feels really cold in 'winter'. 35f here feels colder than 10f in the dry north. But it's just a costly pain in the ass to get on or off.

cool trip adam fish like the lion fish usually get the upper hand from man like the ratfish in the Puget sound we caught so many pacific cod and eliminated the competition for herring and the ratfish simply filled the void I find the life cycles of aquatic fresh/salt fishes and animals fascinating stopped fishing though theirs a thing called bioaccumulation and the thing I figure is accumulating in pacific salmon is radioactive particles the ocean currents have been reeely bad and they don't study that at all the state of Alaska looked at a few fish a couple years after the fact and said "no problem"
