Just heard the sad news of Dave Brubeck's passing. It's hard to find the right words at this point ... Had the chance to meet him in person many years ago after a concert in Austria and found that, while being one of the greatest Jazz musicians and composers ever, he was very humble and down to earth. A most memorable person - he sure was class, not just as an artist. RIP, Mr. Brubeck, you will be missed. Still, through your music, you will live on forever. Thanks, Dave!

When I was in high school Brubeck came to play for one of our school assemblies. We had them on Friday afternoons. I think I was in 9th or 10th grade, so 1968 or 69. Roberta Flack played at another one. All the kids in the gymnasium listening to fab music. It was a great school. I've never been happier.

My god, how is Joe Morello THAT good? The drumming during Paul's solo is just.. I can't even put it into words. How can he play in two time signatures at once (almost) and make it sound so natural??
@dougelick8397
@dougelick8397 6 лет назад
Because despite what current society might say, there are people who are born oozing, natural raw talent. We are not all facsimiles of each other. How boring life would be if we were and there were no Joe Morellos in the world.

So simple: key of C, child's melody, yet they weave into a ballet. Love the tension between the 3/4 and 4/4. Desmond's melody contrasts well against Brubeck's bombast.

A message for all english speakers jazz lovers, you should definitely listen to the song « le jazz et la java » that Claude Nougaro made out of this tune. Depicting this scenario with brio. As an amateur of jazz I ve known Dave B. from early age… and as a french speaking amateur of jazz I ve known Nougaro from early age. Only today, being 24, I discorver that one of his most famous song is from that piece! Mind Blowing! Music always triumph :-))

Nice to think a kid who grew up on a cattle ranch in Ione, CA would grow up to become one of the foremost composers and musicians in jazz (or American Classical Music, as it's known in Europe). Saw the quartet at the Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco. Even when he was ancient, he had a grin from ear to ear. Follow your heart. The rest is easy.

@ubernaffa I know right? I myself am a rocker (both in what I listen to - for the most part- and a drummer) and I still can't grasp what it is that makes jazz drummers so unique and talented when it comes to breaking the time barrier. When I think to rock drummers like Peart who've done great tributes to Buddy Rich I just have to wonder how they do it.
