I'm still convinced that Mike Smith was one of the best five or so singers in rock, ever. After those two weeks on Sullivan following The Beatles, I became a lifelong fan.
If you can find it, Mike Smith was guest on the tonight show just months before his accident, He was at the Piano and played several DC5 hits as the show went into breaks. His voice was great that night.
@@msherer260 Yeah, I seem to remember watching that in real time back then. I'm sure it still exists in the video world, but (so far) no one has posted it.
MIKE SMITH - was / is - the greatest of the rock and roll voices in the 1960s - I met HIM in 2001 at a show HE did at the Turning Point in Piermont New York - HE was so friendly - We took a photo together - the photographer never mailed it to me - sad - but true - ! - what a night - GOD BLESS - MIKE SMITH - FOREVERMORE - and God Bless The DAVE CLARK FIVE !
@sydmccreath4554lead singer of the Move for all you puzzled people reading this. The Move would eventually evolve into the Electric Light Orchestra. And don't forget Jeff Lynne would become a Traveling Wilbury.....
We’re coming up to the 60th anniversary of the arrival in the U.S of this dynamic band. Could not resist listening to this again to celebrate. I was 12 and am still a big fan of their music 🎶🥰🎶 and that voice of Mike Smith still makes my heart skip a beat! Those were the days!
The Dave Clark five started the whole flashy colorful Mod clothing trip in London and they had 3 inch French heels on their boots instead of the usual 2 inch Cuban heels We have those boots and heels loud and clear on their recordings too - ! Their hair cuts were not bangs like the Beatles - But what they called the " Spike" named after Dave Clark's dog Spike !
I was about 11 years old when the Beatles came to the USA. I became an instant fan, but when the Dave Clark 5 showed up, I quickly switched. I loved their stage presentation, and I love their music. It was so different. I loved Mike's vocals, and each one's contribution to the whole. I so loved Dennis's saxophone playing. I hated when they broke up. My heart was so sad to hear of Mike and Dennis passing. These kids of today need to give a listen to this music. It was wonderful back in my day and it's still so wonderful today. So happy I found this. Thank you so much!! Deme in Bama.
Sounds like we're the same age. Yup, when the DC5 turned up on Sullivan after three weeks of The Beatles, I couldn't not think, "This it IT!!!" The Beatles have remained my #1, but I got Mom to buy me every DC5 single that came out over those few years! I don't know what Dave Clark's problem is, but those albums need to be reissued. Should'a been done YEARS ago, really.
Genauso sehe ich (age 66) das auch. Neben dem Stil der Beatles damals waren The Dave Clark Five genau mein Musikstil zum Genießen und Träume auf Vinyl und Magnetbänder. Dank fürs Hochladen. Best regards from Germany. Music is the soal connection in Peace and harmony in the worlt- this music too.
These songs are all very familiar to me because I grew up listening to them. The DC5 were far better musicians technically than most of the other British Invasion artists in the 60’s…👍👍👍👍
Actually the best player, was Mike Smith who, according to the liner notes on the Dave Clark Return! lp, was on his way to being a concert pianist. He wrote and sang lead on all of the big hits as well. Dave never really took his playing all that seriously, he did what he did and that's about all there is to it. For the rest, it sure was a rocking band! Btw- They had more appearences on the Ed Sullivan Television Show than the Beatles or any other Brit bands for that matter. HeyTom, great job with this!
I like it.
I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN - THE DAVE CLARK FIVE WERE AN INSPIRATION TO US ALL - BUT REALLY NEVER GOT THE CREDIT THEY DESERVE - HECK THEY TOURED THE U.S.A. BEFORE THE BEATLES DID 1964- TRUE STORY - THE DAVE CLARK FIVE WERE THE VERY 1ST BRITISH BAND TO TOUR THE U.S.A. !
That’s literally the only live recording on video. I never could match a voice to a face except of course Mike. So Denny sings in 19 Days and I know that Lenny does most of the harmonies with Mike. I still don’t know if Rick really sings. I bought two DC5 books that are now available but they neglect to even mention it.
BECAUSE is one of the greatest songs that ever was written and sung - - Bing Crosby - Frank Sinatra - Elvis Presley could have sang it - it fits that great love song mood ! @@estervalencia2004
😂 Every time I listen to this album, I break down and cry! I just can’t help it! I’m not a sissy either! I’m a teenager again! Btw, I’m singing along to every song! Here’s to my relatives in England! Three cheers! I have to be honest! The Dave Clark five were my favorite band still are!
Steven - YES the Dave Clark Five are wonderful - full of love - joy - power - happiness - - Yes I send my cheers also to your relatives in in England !
"I Need You, I Love You" would have made a great follow up for "Can't You See That She's Mine"! I had the whole catalog. Every single (even the most obscure), every Epic LP and a couple of foreign albums I picked up in Asia back in 1969 and 1970 (not released in the USA). Thanks for the fabulous job of putting all this together, and for the sole purpose of sharing with strangers from all over the world! Thank you very much!
yeah a lot of the Dave Clark Five songs did not make it to the top 10 even the top 40 - but that does not mean the songs were bad - I say the Dave Clark Five were the biggest threat to Beatle - Mania ever ! In fact the Dave Clark Five toured the U.S.A. in 1964 before the Beatles did - true story !
This is not an album. This is a compilation of songs that I put together which are buried on their first 9 US album releases. "Deep cuts" is an expression that describes songs on an album that mostly did not get airplay as a rule.
I LOVE the Dave Clark Five. I've aways felt they didn't get their proper dues. Maybe because they disbanded so early on. That said, Mike Smith's was/is one of the best rock singers. Period.
The Dave Clark Five had so many songs that went unnoticed - They scared the Beatles for about 3 months in 1964 - The only band to ever do so - The Rolling Stones were never a threat nor were the other contemporaries like Gerry and the Pacemakers or the Animals - the Kinks - BUT the Dave Clark Five posed real rivalry - @@tominter8666
Yep, Boddy Graham playing the Drums using the method Dave Clark started simple but up front. Dave was pushing the buttons no matter what anyone says about studio players.
So tell us all how did Dave Clark play drums live onstage ? They were in 1964 the very first British band to tour the U.S.A - Did you know that ? Before The Beatles did ! @@msherer260
Hi Tom ! This was a great idea. I really love When and think it's one of their best written songs. I see Dave is listed as writing the music. Please tell me it's really Mike and Lenny. It has Mike all over it. And where is some live stuff finally. Shit , I see real live performances all over the net from bands like The Hermits, Billy J. Kramer,Pacemakers and even Freddy and The Dreamers.
Hi John! Massapequa here. I've learned thru some DC5 sites that (regardless that Dave took credit) Ron Ryan wrote many of their hits including Because, Bits and Pieces, Sometimes and many more. And Bobby Graham played drums on many of their biggest hits. I can live with that because the whole band was so great. I agree that's its a shame there are practically no live performances. One of the downsides of that is that after all these decades of listening to their music, I still can't pick out voices and who's singing what except for Mike Smith's distinctive voice. There are some opportunities to hear some live songs (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-imKauomnRag.html ) and Everybody Knows (the other one) sung by Lenny. Otherwise, all five are singing many songs in lip sync clips, even two part harmonies! Ha ha.
Tom, thanks for the great info some of which I knew but not all. Bobby Graham was the English Hal , great drummers both. I loved Dusty's drummer too. (Bob Whackett ? )
@JOHNWLOUCKS “When” is one of my favorites too and I can tell you it was written by Lenny Davidson with Mike Smith helping on those dramatic piano pieces. I only know this from reading an interview with Lenny in the 2009 Spring edition #28 of Ugly Things Magazine. It’s worth having if it’s still available for sale.
@@fangirllinda Linda. Thank you so much for the great info. I had thought that Lenny was involved in composing When. And those dramatic piano parts were from Mike's classical training. (maybe) As a musician I also wonder what else was going on with the recording ? Sounds like a doubling of piano and Baritone bass and other stuff. Great tune !!
@Michael Curry Lenny was interviewed in 2009 by Ugly Things and talked about the DC5 songwriting procedure, most notably Catch Us If You Can”,”When”, “Sweet Memories” and “ Time”...all Lenny compositions. Interesting story about “Red and Blue”Great insight into the workings of the DC5. Five stars to Mr Davidson! That issue also has interviews with DC and Adrian Kerridge.
When The Beatles Rubber Soul came out it was all over for the DC5. They couldn't adapt. Love the look at 15:00 but it just wasn't happening for them then.
I don’t think all the albums were ever released, I could be wrong. I stumbled upon this mp3 album with most of their songs many years ago, looks like a Russian bootleg. Seems like Dave passed up golden opportunities by not releasing the albums on all the formats thru the years.
@JimAndDeePatton Agree 100% He pulled the rug out from under us fans because he wanted to do something else... but I guess he was laughing all the way to the bank! I also read somewhere that the lack of product in the market place was one factor in not getting into the RNRHOF sooner than 2008.
