www.ted.com When Dave deBronkart learned he had a rare and terminal cancer, he turned to a group of fellow patients online -- and found a medical treatment that even his own doctors didn't know. It saved his life. Now he calls on all patients to talk with one another, know their own health data, and make health care better one e-Patient at a time.

Honestly I started to tear up. Very touching talk. "My doctor never told me that, I had to hear it from phish" My doctor never told me about fibromyalgia, even though my mother has it, and we share many of the same symptoms. I feel like he wasting years of my time, and to him I was probably just some kid that came to complain to me every once an a while.

Patient is not a third person word. Many of us have indeed been in a hospital bed before, myself included. I do agree that it does not feel good when people talk about those who have been in the hospital for various reasons and they have no sympathy for what they say. In a way it makes me feel embarrassed about going to the hospital so much because I now know the things others say about patients in a hospital or doctor's office. To hear that there are actually people out there who care about the patient's opinion feels good. One of Dave’s colleges says that, one of the most underutilized resources are the patients, which is very true. Working patient with patient can get you very much information, more than many think. Some patients could bring up questions that you never thought to ask, or even have the answer to questions you have thought would never be answered. No one knows yourself as well as you do, saying that you can answer a lot more questions than you think, if you actually just take a seat and put some thought into what you want to know. Allow more than just doctors to help you, learn to help yourself. Using others research, especially the latest or newest research, can help you learn a lot about yourself and you can even help others who don’t have the proper connections to do the same for themselves.

Patients have a lot of time to learn and research on their particular health issue, doctors don't have this luxury. This is why patients can often find better treatments for rare or uncommon issues.

I think the whole idea of patients using other patients to pool info is great! Taking charge of your health seems to be a trend in the past few years, and I have watched other Tedx Talks and other videos that seem to have the same overall message. As patients, we should network with other patients who have similar questions/issues/health problems etc. and get advice through them while building a community of support. I have seen a lot of online communities and support groups already for various things health-related, but how much better would it be if all of healthcare was linked to patients world-wide to share information with? As patients, I agree, we are underutilized and I think a big part of that reason is because people have yet to get on board with the whole idea of managing their OWN health with the help of the doctor. Like Dave mentioned, 70-80% of healthcare is how we take care of ourselves, so why not use our resources (other patients) and team up to better our own health and help others learn ways to better theirs.

OK, maybe that is what its like the States, but I dont believe its like that here in the UK. You are touching on the fact that culture currently dictates the behaviour. You have a different health system, you put the whole onus on the doctor, and if he is wrong he must pay a price. My original point though remains, Doctors have the ability, the desire, and the resources at their hands to be a far more exploratory, open minded, creative. We all have pressures, it is human instinct to overcome

In Europe we have now something of a "Unicard", but it doesn't have any actual information, just numbers. I think it's time we have something (chip-card?) with our vital data: not just health, but history, school, jobs, workshops, curriculum, associative sports, etc, and that WE can access or share too.

Quite weird situation it is. You are The only person, who knows how You feel, but you can't diagnose the condition. On the other hand we have a trained professional, who can diagnose, but has no clue of how you feel. So what's the point in hiding information from a patient (and why the heck you call it ethics???)

@SEThatered We've had to hide medical information from my grandmother, coz she makes medical decisions based on how stroppy she's feeling at the time. If we didn't do this to/for her, she'd be dead. So i can understand why doctors feel the need to do this.

@LhyphenFour, Rubbish. Doctors are employed to seek the cures, preventions, and treatments that are available. That is their single most important role, above even administering it, they must find it first.
