Hey everyone. Thanks for the comments, positive and otherwise. For those interested, this group released a studio record, Spirit Moves, and 2 live sets from their record release shows this past June. Check it out here at greenleafmusic com.
I accidentally stumbled across this slice of genius and I always forget the trumpeters name. So every time I happen to find it, it’s like a special treat.
Incredible video...what strange comments this page has though... Thanks, glad to see a high quality video of this great band playing... Congrats Dave Douglas on winning the downbeat poll yet again for trumpet of the year! Marcas Rojas is killin' on the low end...funky tuba!
YEEAH! I play trombone myself, and love to see what other players have come up with to enjoy thier instrument. Nice, nice NICE! You can tell these guys are totally digging the sound.
That was a great recording (done in 1971) and all of the tracks can be found on You Tube, but there are many other brilliant Banda groups - I like that style a lot (and I have been playing many linds of brass music for over 45 years.)
Mention really should be made of Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy (Bonilla and Chancey were members, maybe Rojas at some point, too), which is clearly the inspiration for this groupand for Douglas' trumpet style (with this group). Check them out - Lester was a genius!
This i a great song and if you know music like I do then you will get the feel of this song...and to everyone who says "oh it could be better with guitar or even some syntheseizer," you're wrong, it's smooth slow bluesy music and it's not supposed to be exciting just completely chill and laid back
ever since the first time I saw a video from NRP Channel Im amazed of all the performances... but shame on me because it is 2013 and all the videos I like were uploaded since 2006 and so... where have I been..!!!??
Come on guys, I know the space isn't great, and it was impromptu, but intonation, ensemble, and the improvisation. I'm sure you've had better days. But thanks for your efforts.
It's not that he spelled anything wrong that makes me so upset. It's that people sit on here all day long and say this and that and judge people about innumerable things. Notice that I haven't actually expressed my opinion about the playing in this video (or anything about the video for that matter). The only thing I want is for you to back up your comments with something like knowledge....or videos of your own. You obviously think that your opinion is the "right" one....so prove it.
Rojas sounds great on here! Not the instrument I would necessarily have chosen for the gig, but that big rotary valve tuba has a nice smooth tonal quality. French Horn guy, (sorry I don't know his name) is a great choice for this group, nice legit technique, but not TOO legit : ) It's always impressive to hear powerful musicians, who could easily play 100 times as many notes, restraining themselves and presenting their art using a different musical vocabulary. Bravo Dave Douglas!
To judge his playing abilities, this ensemble's choice of music, and by all means the collective improvisatory abilities of a group takes some confidence that I doubt your abilities or whatever abilities your 13-year-old possesses might be able to back up. Like I said....post some videos of you and your 13-year-old playing some sweet, up-tempo, perfectly styled music, and let the rest of us decide.
Man, I love the trombonist's mouthpiece, looks like one of those 1920's era Conicals... I'm stuck using a Shlike 51D. Also, he holds the slide rather oddly.
Having read the posts to this point so far, I am confident to find this absurd, yet still a small pin prick into the bubble of reality. From enlightened musical commentary, to instrument-speak like "trombone mouthpieces", to calling someone a douche, jabs at misspellers stuck between the "I" and "Y" of Wynton. The folk song of Democracy!
Daniel Ramirez Looks similar to a Christian Lindberg (also called a conn Lindberg) or a david child's, but not exactly. By the very simplicity of the outer shape, it is most likely custom made from a music shop that does custom work.
Daniel Ramirez I found it. tromboneforum.org/index.php?topic=52921.0 according to this forum, Luis uses a custom Greg Black mouthpiece with an 11-sh rim.
Chiapet456, You are absurd. "I've never heard of these guys before." For starters, the trombone player is the solo chair in the Vanguard Orchestra...one of the longest tenured and most killin' groups in NYC today. Post some videos of your 13-year-old, and let the rest of the world decide who is better.
hey i played the trombone in band thru highschool. its a instrument that takes talent to learn how to play, it was funny tho, we had some sayings, like were boners or we do it in 7 positions
Dave Douglas has begun turning to Americana, like his friend Bill Frisell, and he has come up with some interesting twists to things that might seem otherwise to be mundane, but with him they shine... Wouldn't this band be an excellent backup to Hugh Lurie's new blues adventures?
I feel like Dave is almost flat. Maybe... a just slightly smaller mouthpiece would ease the uneasiness in my ear. I love his tone either way, as he's my favorite trumpeter, but I definitely feel like a slightly smaller mouthpiece could be used. Then again, I use a small Schilke for everything, so that would explain my uneasiness.
