That's not early by other societies. American society has made us look at it this way. Starting a family and buying a house are set for 30s and 40s nowadays.
@@hbkkidcorrupt Probably not divorce but definitely the type to be swinging in their 40s because they realize they’ve only had one partner in their lives and they’re acknowledging their own mortality.
I too was surprised that he is getting married so soon. He is also making a lot for a 19 year old: some college graduates do not earn up to that. I won't be surprised if he is a Christian from the Bible belt of the USA: it is very common for people from there to get married that young and they usually stay married for a long time as well.
Dude is having a major buyer’s remorse. I’m in my fifties, and trust me, I’ve had this same feeling more than once or twice. The goal is to learn from that sick-in-the-stomach feeling.
Yep. I was an Officer in the Army and just retired last year. When I was a 2LT I bought a Tacoma on credit and will never ever do that again. I remember leaving the Toyota dealer and feeling like "what have I done". I learned from it and paid cash for vehicles to this day. This kid is trying and it is great he identified that feeling and is learning from it.
The insurance can be killer for sure. So many people focus on fitting the payment into the budget without ever checking the insurance cost and get a nasty wake up call. Dude went from liability to full coverage on a “sports car”. The cost to insure it at 19 was steep I’m sure. I think it cost me around $185 for full coverage insurance on a 2012 Ford Focus in 2013 when I was 19. I had no moving violations at all but I was on my own solo insurance and it was steep and that’s a 4 cylinder car that wasn’t fast whatsoever. And I didn’t plan that ahead because I was 19 and dumb. So I wonder if that same type of thing happened with him somehow.
My husband wanted his dream car that he saw in a magazine. 5 1/2 years we finally saved enough to buy the car in cash. Be patient, if you don't have the money, don't buy it!
I made this same mistake at 20 . 16 years later I’m still driving it . I love the truck and it’s a great reminder of why I will never make that mistake again !
Driving it 16 years later doesn’t make it a mistake. It’s those who continue to upgrade year after year and keep themselves in consistent debt for a depleting asset! But it sounds like your mistakes has probably saved you money unless your interest rate was crazy, because yes a cheap car can be great for a short period, but often it’s cheap because it’s near the end or already has issues!
@@ek5384 what sarcasm or folley you need to try and justify your ridiculous statement, go ahead. It doesn’t change the fact most 19 year olds can easily pass a MacDonalds interview.
His car has 270K+ miles. I’m sorry but he needs a new car one way or another. Maybe this move was “stupid” but let’s not pretend this kid doesn’t need a new ride
@@queen.kristal8395for marriage, yes I agree! I kno a few ppl that married young, had a kid or two and ended up divorcing cuz they out grew each other! But it may work out for them
@@queen.kristal8395 At least he’s being responsible in that aspect of life by not creating a broken home. That would be far worse than this ridiculous car loan.
I did the same thing, when only a little older than him. Bought the hot car I shouldn't have. Really enjoyed it, then added up what I'd spent on payments and insurance for it, realized I'd spent more than the total purchase price of the car, and still had years of payments left! Sold it immediately. It was a spendy enough car and I'd paid enough of it off by then, that I was able to pay off what I owed, and bought a boring reasonable car outright. Many years later, I now have a fun vehicle that I paid cash for, but my daily driver is still that reasonable car.
It takes work but this is truly one of the things Dave Ramsey taught me 15+ years ago. Buy cars with cash. My wife and I have lived by this and while we've had some less than awesome cars - it's been so peaceful. Thank you, Dave.
@@jimroscovius tell that to all the rich ppl would do the same exact thing on cars they can completely buyout! Like come on ppl be real! A lot of these cars nowadays are not worth keeping after the factory warranty expires! So you lease them for a few years and give them back
The funniest part of this whole call to me is that he bought a very easily affordable car in the dumbest way possible. $20k is not that much of a stretch to save up for a ‘dream car’ and that specific car is reasonably reliable so the maintenance won’t be killer expensive
Absolutely love this Dave Ramsey is such a wholesome guy I think it's amazing that he is influencing young people to make better decisions. I've made absolutely terrible this decisions that I rounded up making multiple times because I didn't really unpacked it as you would say. But now I'm a changed woman I thoroughly Do a moral inventory when I make a detrimental decision about how it happens so I don't have to make that mistake again
Id be more concerned with him getting married so young. Unless he can read the future, the odds of that marriage lasting and him not getting ran thru the divorce machine is very very low.
@@jimmymcgill6778 How do you define "lots"?? Looking around my circle; 80% of my age group are divorced or on second marriage. You can't dispute the divorce stats.
That car isn't costing him just $400/month in a car payment. He also likely has a $200-$400/month insurance payment. That's before he even puts a drop of gas in it. My guess is he was paying $50/month for liability on the junker and when he got the first full coverage insurance bill for the Z he about died. He's dang near kicking out a mortgage payment for that car.
Exactly My cousin bought a Dodge Charger v8 Paying $600 monthly I told him plus insurance probably $200 and $250 gas monthly Your car is costing you 1k He just looked shocked Like he didn’t know he was paying that and he is 21 living with mommy and dadddy
I'm laughing maniacally at your ignorant comment as I'm looking at all of my 15 cars that have soared in value since I bought them before and during the plandemic 🤣😂😆 Some even more than they cost new 😎
450 dollar car payment with almost 7 a month income isn't bad.. But knowing I don't deserve anything is priceless. Save 3gs.. a month. A house down payment will be in hand shortly.
Love this it’s not about the money it’s about the choices you make and how we respond to them! Thanks so much for the great content Dave, Jade, and the Ramsey team! God bless!!!
I too was surprised that he is getting married so soon. He is also making a lot for a 19 year old: some college graduates do not earn up to that. I won't be surprised if he is a Christian from the Bible belt of the USA: it is very common for people from their to get married that young.
Yeah, sounds like he needs new transportation anyway. If the car he bought is dependable and in good condition, I am not sure selling it to do penance for impulse is the best move.
Honestly, this one isn't a huge deal. With no debt, and bit over $6k a month, they can afford this car without issue. I'm in my mid 40's, and I kick myself for passing on a killer deal I could've gotten about 20 years ago on a motorcycle that I wanted. I could've easily afforded it, and I never saw a deal like that again.
So if he sells the car he will probably lose money plus how is he going to get to work or sell real estate? He will still need another car, maybe less expensive but after the loss from selling it, is it really worth it?
Dude, you're 19. So much to learn about life and yourself. There's absolutely no need to get married at this point in your life. Too young. Go live life a little more. Smh
Keep the car and pay every extra dollar towards the principal. Delay getting married and or living together till your debt free and own your own home. Then stay single so you never are faced with divorce which is worse than being in debt.
Having a reliable, nicer car is peace of mind and makes you a little happier. Just pay it off and be proud that you are putting money into your dream car. He's upset because he wanted to put a down payment on a house. Maybe it was a decision that you should have thought about more, because you went and changed your plans abruptly, but I would keep the car. Just work harder to pay it off AND save that down payment. A $450/month payment for a better car that doesn't break down twice per month sounds good to me.
Always ten years old cars was $500. Cheap to fix , oh the good old days . Now ten years old cars $400 a month 20k ? Let's take this into consideration for his wanting a car. Breaks my heart it's. Hrad world we live in . Glad he called dve Ramsey
Im when i was 19, i financed a 2005 corolla. I didnt know what 16.8 percent interest meant and didnt care. I just wanted a new car even tho i had a paid off 1989 Pontiac that drove fine. We live and i definitely learned
Why are 19 year olds getting married??? That’s the biggest mistake here ! Keep the car don’t get married. You’re young once You’re old and responsible with bills bills bills the rest of it
370z is a great car, I don’t think he made a bad choice. If he works harder he will pay it off soon enough and that car holds its value a lot Considering the average payment in the USA is over 700 now, having a payment of 430 is NOT BAD AT ALL.
His fiancé needs to run if he continues to do this. I’ve been dealing with this for years once debt is paid off my husband gets something else, it’s defeating.
I don't see the big deal. 20k car is a pretty low price for a car especially when they bring in $6500 a month. They have more than enough to buy the car.
Or he could keep the car and stop hanging around those friends. He's 19. It's okay to make mistakes when you are young. If he said he was 30, then that's a different story. He has to live a little before he can learn.
So if you wake up and realize you did something stupid you would prefer to wake up every day looking at your stupid decision? lol. Great way to live. Not materialistic at all are ya?
@@donjohnson1416 he's 19. Why are they in a rush to buy a house? There are other questions that could have been asked. Normally, Dave says if the car is less than half of what you make, then keep it.
When I bought my car they gave me a 30 day cooling off period where I can return the car no questions asked but I would have to pay 20 cents per mile I put on it. This is the only car I ever bought but it's that not common?
It’s exhausting to have a car that breaks down constantly. Especially if he lives in a car dependent area and a reliable car will be needed as a real estate agent to show houses. Keep the car dude!
He's done well but I agree he needs to get rid of it due to the reason why it happened. it's not the gravity of the mistake but it's the fact that the behavior needs to be cut off at the pass right away or it's going to lead to a behavior pattern that's going to make a situation a situation become grave
This sounds like a great decision and a awesome car. Makes almost 4K a month and a $400 month car payment. What’s he going to buy now once he regrets selling it?? Another $500 Dave Ramsey car..
The car isn’t even the biggest mistake he’s making…getting married at 19 is stupid…and spare me any of your personal “I got married at 19 and we’re still married” stories because odds are it’s not gonna work lol
Dude that car is 10 years old. 20k? I think it has something to do with becoming a realtor and not wanting to show up in an older car but he can get something decent looking with cash.
Yep, I was thinking 10 year old car and he’s 19, no biggie, buuuut I now consider that it’s more of The mentality and the why. Side note, love Jade, but she wooed too many times, IMO, because it wasn’t a brand new car.
There’s a 19 year old at work who just bought a truck and the payment is $570 /month and insurance is $170 /month. I was like ohh lawd, then the schedule came out he only had 20 hours for the next week 😂😂😂
@@handleyobusiness smh idk why y’all keep saying that! There’s literally rich ppl with car loans that can buy the car outright if they want to but don’t for whatever their reasoning is
Boy not dreaming to big to buy that junk 10 year old Nissan i almost relapsed the other day and bought a 2023 corvette but i will never go back in debt so I’m saving up lol
His mistake was not buying a $20,000 car. His mistake was buying a Nissan lol. He should have used that $20,000 to buy a new Toyota Corolla. That would have lasted him 20 years and very low maintenance
Imo, it's the insurance on a car like that at his age is the problem. The car really is not that much. Why keep pouring money into the car he has that broke down so often.
He can pay $1000 on the car plus his payment... Heck he's bringing in $3,500 a month!! Or get rid of it.. he could have that paid off quick if he's putting extra on the principal. With them getting married it will be no problem paying this off faster as long as he's throwing big $$ at the principal!
The guy needed a car either way, and does he even have enough money to sell the car? Where's he going to come up with 20k TODAY? Just pay it off as quickly you can and keep it as your daily driver.
This is ridiculous. He's 19, he needs a car. He is so far ahead of other 19 year olds it's crazy. $450 isn't much of a car payment and he can afford it. Selling the car at this point is probably a worse decision than buying it. He messed up, but really it's not a big deal. Just don't do it again.
