This week we had the opportunity to tour the Fab Factory Recording www.fabfactorys... Studio and speak with each of the fantastic engineers working there--including the wonderful Dave Pensado!
The Fab Factory is a 4-room, 3-booth studio owned by Shaun Fabos. Right away, clients and visitors (like ourselves!) are struck by the "vibe" of the space. Art covers the walls of the reception and lounge areas, and the studio actually doubles as a gallery exhibiting twice yearly. Shaun ensures that the Fab Factory feels creative at all times, allowing artists to do their best work in a comfortable space.
Each of the 4 rooms are designed for mixing, while 2 operate more as production suites. Jason LaRocca--an engineer, producer, and scoring mixer--first gave us a rundown of his setup. Jason runs Pro Tools with an Avid S3 controller, while a rack-mounted QSC unit provides 64 channels of I/O, onboard EQ and compression, and much of what of a traditional console offers. Because Jason's work involves mixing in 5.1/7.1 surround as well as stereo, the QSC functions similarly to the master section on a board, allowing him to swap speaker configurations as needed. He also has a nice collection of modular synthesizers in an A-100 rack, which he jokingly told us he plays with "when Pro Tools crashes."
Interviews:
Shaun Fabos 0:49
Jason LaRocca 5:25
Michele Canova Iorfida 28:37
Dave Pensado 50:40
Of course, we also visited Dave Pensado in his Fab Factory home. Dave and I have been friends for many years now and had a lovely conversation about current and past projects, the state of rock music today, some of the equipment/techniques he uses, and much more! Dave mixes almost exclusively in-the-box, but he also has a selection of outboard gear that suits his style. A clever piece is the Bettermaker EQ 232 that opens as a plug-in controlled via the physical unit. Interestingly enough, Dave is also a fan of IK Multimedia's compact iLoud monitors which I use all the time!
Prior to Fab Factory, Dave worked out of Larrabee Studios in Los Angeles where he mixed on an SSL. It was around 2010 that he discovered he was doing better mixes in-the-box than on a console, and by Pro Tools 11, he couldn't beat what he was doing with a DAW. Of course, Dave champions whatever method best enhances the individual engineer's creativity, and speaks about the importance of being receptive to new techniques. This might include, for example, using certain plug-ins that allow panning of specific frequencies--a helpful hint he gave us for keeping mixes interesting!
As always, we hope you enjoy this look into Fab Factory Recording Studios and conversation with Dave Pensado.

I learned so much in such a short time, I'll always have a great deal of gratitude for him. Thanks Dave, thanks Warren, and everyone involved in this video.

Great video.... This recording is gold..., knowledge, gear, studiophile binge.... Excellent work! What's with the thumbs down??? who would do that? If you don't like it, just move on to something else in another channel.... If you're hating on this it must mean you're jealous that Warren has the connection/contacts, knowledge, experience and opportunity to be around all these people and this equipment and YOU DONT, so don't thumbs-down on something like this when Warren works hard to impart so much knowledge on his channel, mixing tips, gear review, recording/miking tips, and even lets you download the MULTI-TRACKS of many of his projects for you to mix/master/EQ/play around/practice yourself with the tracks separately....ALL FOR FREE.... Great work Warren, and great channel.

I forgot to add, it's true the video is a bit lengthy and I guess some people with A.D.D / A.D.H.D. or short attention spans feel like thumbs down, but you can just skim thru and check out the contents/highlights, you dont have to watch the whole thing.

It has nothing to do with ADD and short attention span when you can do the following: skip ahead, pause and watch later or simply not watch. If a video is *uselessly* long, then it is another story but all this stupid mad hate against "long" videos (long compared to what?!) I canno stand at all. I don't have much patience as I used to and I love doing many things at the same time when I can but I love when things are engaging and I know good things take time. It still take 9 months to deliver a baby. What would these people do in that case? Hey doc, sorry but can't you make it... like... 9 days, please? ;) Many of those who supposedly suffer from short attention span simply have no attention at all, they just click hopelessly no matter what appears for the sake of clicking and changing. It's like the old thing with the remote control. I wish we had "long" videos years ago when instead you could not upload anything longer than 15 minutes and had to split it into parts. It is ok to thumb down if you don't like it, otherwise the button just wouldn't be there but just use common sense.

What seems strange to me is that everyone has been pursuing these super expensive, esoteric word clock generators for years... and still getting their standalone interfaces modded with aftermarket clocks. And now, it's perfectly cool to just locally re-clock a whole rack full of devices tossing digital audio streams at each other synchronized by a distributed clock over Ethernet? Hmmm... I wonder if we're going to see people tearing this stuff apart for being "inferior" in a few years. I mean, after all... if you don't even want 3 meters of coax between your source clock and your I/O interface, how is 50 feet of UTP somehow OK? Or, are we now deciding that any reasonably sensible quartz crystal with a decent low-noise linear PSU driving it will do the job just fine? Either way, as long as this becomes a relatively well-supported standard between various hardware and software manufacturers, it's nothing but good. I can't see how it would be anything but a blessing to be able to run a single armored fiber optic cable from stage to mix position instead of a 48-channel snake of balanced mic level analog audio.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 лет назад
Hi Nick, very good comment my friend! I have a friend at Hewlett Packard who also does audio. He says they don't understand Audio guys obsession with clocking and that they run hundreds of feet of cable without clocking issues. I agree, the sooner we move into the practical the better!
@nickguy6820
@nickguy6820 6 лет назад
Absolutely. 192kHz is still practically DC. There's probably more intentional slew to reduce EMI emission than cable-induced slew for any sane word-clock distribution. There are much bigger things to worry about, IMO. As long as you have your obligatory lava lamp in the studio, it'll be fine. :-)

Pensado is Spanish for "reasoned", and I find that a very appropriate name for Dave. This guy is so unassuming, and never too good to consider someone else's opinion. But he knows his stuff inside out and backward. I get the feeling some no-name kid could come in there and talk honestly about some aspect of making music that he's passionate about, and Dave would still find something to learn from him.

When I saw there was a new video up, I was delighted. When I saw that it was two hours long I was even happier! This was a great look inside and outside the rooms (we got to hear about how the facility came about) and then not only details about how the rooms are built and treated (five feet of bass traps! would love to have room for that myself) but also how they are used differently. And as a bonus a nice fire-side(desk-side?) chat with Dave. Wonderful!... thanks for putting this together.

Awesome video! I found it interesting that Warren doesn't seem to have much exposure or experience with the world of synthesizers and the huge ecosystem of tools/toys for sound experimentation. Awesome studio tour and interviews. Love the synth stuff! As a guitarplaying i have to say im a bit jealous how much synth tech have advanced the last 20 years compared to the guitar. In my opinion nothing beats the sound and feel of a guitar, but it sure looks like a lot of fun playing around with all those knobs and getting all those crazy and cool sounds.. Also there's a lots of cool tips and tricks and ideas i picked up in this video. Since it was over 2 hours i was going to save half of it for tomorrow, but once i started watching i couldn't stop..lol.. Great stuff! I only wish i had i notebook in hand from the beginning so i could write some of it down. That Magic AB plugin looks cool. Love the Waves stuff, most of their plugin's are only $29 if you buy at the right time, (they always have sales)..lol.. This is a video i will definitely watch again and then i'll be taking notes. Did you see the SynthAxe demo from the 80's? Looks like a toy. lol.. I have an old Roland guitarsynth on one of my guitars, i remember it was fun playing around with it, but the tracking wasnt that good. It worked ok for pad-like stuff, so no shredding..lol. I also have the Fishman tripleplay wireless midi controller, it works much better. But for keyboard/synth stuff i think its better to just use a keyboard/synth.

What excites me is that one of the guys is using an Avid control surface to mix...what a great idea, using sliders and buttons instead being chained to a mouse....that is the future right there..bring it on. Also, it felt a bit sad when Warren mournfully admitted he mixes hybrid, a cry for help. The analog dinosaurs and their walls of worthless gear just wishing they could be like the guys with a computer and some speakers. Oh, a control surface too..bam

That was a surprise! DP is a rock guy! I get that he is hired to mix Justin Bieber and all the other stuff he does and good for him. He seems to be making it really good. And once again good for him, no problem. But when he is wondering why rock (the music he loves) is becoming the new jazz does he look in the mirror?

The bit about trying to find less expensive reverbs is the reason I started collecting old romplers. When you need a piano that isn't taking up the full frequency spectrum, you can't beat an M1. Or add some strings from a JV. How about a harp from the D550, with just a touch of aliasing? It's a breath of fresh air to tap into a 4MB sample library when all the VSTs are sporting multi-gigabyte sampled 909 kicks. ;-)

Love what you said about the phase trick on your father's stereo, Warren ! Immediately, I thought of the time in the mid/late 90's when Sony had upgraded their CD-Walkman headphones (but not the Walkman itself) and if you pushed the mini-TRS 1/8" male end in all the way, the low mids and the bass would disappear in both channels, and you'd be left with something very similar to what you described with your father's stereo. So my solution was to push the 1/8" plug in only to the RING and that would allow the entire image to come through. Of course, if you bumped it then all bets were off. Great Vid !! Always informative stuff \w/

thanks for answer. So theoretically if we apply on clean tracks "real devices", or their VST "emulators" (plugins) ...we should be able to get (almost) exact same sound? .. most of those stuff Ive never seen, and I doubt that there are plugins for them..
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 лет назад
Zvonimir Sarcevic kind of! There are so many factors! You would to emulate the whole signal chain to get that exact sound as near as you can
@zvonimirsarcevic7928
@zvonimirsarcevic7928 6 лет назад
Thanks again for answer. Its seems clearer with every video, and interview, that all those great (and bad) records sounds as they sounds, just because everybody in "chain", from musician to produces, felt the way that they felt on recording-mixing day, and if recording, and mixing was done some other day...it would sound (almost) completely different....Geez..this gives hope that my amateur mixes can sound good to some other people..even If I dont like them in the end.:)

Hello Warren, I noticed Dave Pensado's clock was showing 44100 on that song mix. Is he really mixing at 44100? Not judging really, just curious since I was with the assumption that most of the Music Industry was already recording and mixing at 96khz at least. Thank you in advance

RE the interview with Dave: Wow, that's really a wild concept to not want to write a pop song. In other words, "Oh no, I don't want to write a song EVERYBODY likes. I want a song only cool people like." For me, I don't write pop songs because my song aren't out there yet, therefore not (yet) popular. I hope every song I write becomes a pop song. Hell yes.

So I'm watching this vid and thoroughly enjoying the stellar studio and discussions, and this is obviously one of the best vids on youtube, but I need your help as my ex has kidnapped me and I'm now stuck in the trunk of her '89 Camry with only 1 bar of internet on my phone and 3% battery traveling down hwy 40 west (presumably). I don't have much time. I will need you to intercept this vehicle before we reach her aunt Jamima's house in mobile alabamer where they plan to keep me in their basement well. This could be my last-ever message. Please help me before it's too

Re the difference between pop and rock, as a kid I always just took it to mean "rock is in minor keys, pop is in major keys". But in truth it's a silly rule that holds up to no scrutiny. So I finally found a real answer to the question. And the answer is "who gives a fuck".

Great talk about boundaries and creativity Warren, but then I see many of the most known Mixers kind of saying that we should follow the sound that is on radio, otherwise we are dead or out of the picture.... well that is the first and biggest boundary in creativity and making music....and as you may know the new sound is the sound of the guys that risk their self to be them and create something NEW. 1:21:33

Absolutely one killer video. Thanks fellas. Question: I’m considering purchasing a Digigrid IOS and Warren you mentioned Waves was discussing a digigrid product with you. What is your take on the gear? Sound quality wise, will I need another DAC monitor controller or will the onboard converters hold their weight. Fill I need a little push in that direction before making the purchase.
