I got sucked into attending a timeshare presentation in Las Vegas, back in 2008. We were offered $280 just to attend. It was the most incredible marketing operation that I have ever seen in my life. The professionalism, the set up, everything was just so well executed. And people were signing up! I couldn't believe it! Eventually, after a painstaking process, the plethora of sales people gave up on us and we received our check for $280. As a young man I cleared blocked sewers for a living. I dug trenches by hand, and I painted two story houses with nothing more than a few brushes, a couple of buckets and a ladder. The $280 that we "earned" in Las Vegas was by far and away the hardest cash that I've ever earned in my life.

My husband and I once agreed to attend a time share presentation, to which they are offering show tickets, because we knew they would drive us there, and weren't we lucky that the van was coming in ten minutes. The location was a half block away from our hotel. We walked into the lobby where everyone was lining up to fill out forms, declared the lobby "Beautiful!" and walked right out the front declaring we needed some air. Saved 20 bucks on cab fair from Fremont St, didn't care about the show.

I went to a Direct Buy presentation and it was the same way. It was so obvious it was a scam; I was actually entertained by the presentation. People however were happily spending up to ten thousand dollars on a membership just to order from their catalogue. They would start at ten grand and negotiate down from there. It was unbelievable pressure, but I didn't want the membership even if it was free.

My friend used to go to Vegas when they paid $$ to sit through a presentation. He'd finish the presentation with his wife as required and when it was over he'd tell them, I'd love to but into it but I need approval. Sales rep would reply, "need approval? But your wife is here. Oh not from her, but my bankruptcy trustee.". He said they'd all turn different shades of red and purple and stomp off. He'd collect his $$ and move onto the next presentation. That was their pocket money while in Vegas. 😂

I did a similar tactic when I bought an RV recently. See, the sales tactic of " let me talk to my manager" puts them at an advantage, becuase the person you are talking to has his hands tied, (his manager calls the shots) meanwhile you are sweating the descision in front of him. So I pretended to call my wife. I told the salesman " my wife said the price must come down. She says we can get a better deal elsewhere. Sorry, my hands are tied" It flustered the salesman a bit, and I ended up being able to negotiate a better price

Ramsey subscriber here. He promoted Timeshare Exit Team and the ads were disclosed as ads. Then the Timeshare companies allegedly sued Timeshare Exit Team so many times that they were drowning in legal fees and could no longer afford the commercials on the Ramsey Show. Dave believed they were helping people though, and continued to promote them pro-bono. Dave declared war on the timeshare companies and they started harassing him. They hired a reporter to ambush him at a hotel for a hit piece. I wouldn't be surprised if the timeshare companies are paying the people who are suing Dave to get him off their back.

I used to sell these "products" thirty years ago when I was a poor graduate student, so trust me when I say this. DON'T BUY A TIMESHARE. Easiest way to get out of a presentation if you have already showed up is to say that (1) I don't vacation; (2) I don't have any money to vacation; and (3) even if you were giving it away, I would not sign up. Take your free gifts and then get out of Dodge. Fact is, even if they were giving them away for free, it is still a bad deal for most people. The annual maintenance fees keep going up forever and ever, and the exchange system usually does not work out, even if you plan out months ahead. It is a scam from which you can possibly never escape.

Thanks! As well, I took a tip from someone I knew about selling timeshares. I forget the company now, but I only did it for a couple of months before realizing that those "90-minute" presentations that people agree to attend are much much longer and pressure-filled. I quickly realized that the whole thing was essentially all but a scam. Of the handful of people that I've known that have had them, not one was happy. Agree with you, DO NOT BUY A TIMESHARE! I would even say DO NOT BOTHER SIGNING UP FOR THE FREE WEEKEND or whatever they offer. It's not worth the time, hassle, pressure, etc.

I'm 44 years old and I myself and my wife WILL NEVER buy a timeshare. That said, my parents did about 15 years ago. They bought a timeshare at a condo at Myrtle Beach. They lived in Northern VA at the time. They have traded their week at their time share for other timeshares all over the world and have been to Scotland, Italy, Greece, Hawaii ( in January ), and all over the Caribbean and Virgin Islands. They actually retired to Myrtle Beach a few years back and built a new home and now that condo there is just used to trade for other time share owners weeks all over the world. So it works out for them and they more then go their money's worth. They just got back from their 3rd cruise already this year also and it's still the 1st week of March so that shows how much they love to travel.

I worked for a resort company that did something similar for RV parks. People's fees were increased annually. Our collection team was brutal. Many of those who bought into a contract didn't read them and didn't know earlier contracts froze membership fees at age 65 and we were only supposed to freeze the fees if someone called and complained. I suggest everyone knows their contract. If we brought someone to court to collect back fees and they actually showed up, we would try and make a deal before the case went before a judge. We did that because, any case that a judge ruled on, we lost.

I was going to post the same thing. He even did an entire show with this particular company, which is very unusual when it comes to most of his sponsors. It isn’t surprising he was paid a large sum for this kind of promotion. However, it was explicitly stated they were a sponsor of his. I don’t think this suit will hold water. With that being said, one of his many insurance providers may pay out a fraction of the amount requested to settle it and make the nuisance go away. The $150M is unlikely to see the light of day.

Back in the 90s, I saw an ad for timeshares offering a free color TV just for attending. I thought about riding my motorcycle to it because it was 50 miles away, but decided to take my van because I wasn't sure if I could strap the TV on my bike securely for the return trip. After going through several painful hours being pressured to buy, which I declined, it was time to get my TV. What I got was a 3" Casio LCD TV operated on 4 AA batteries. I went to a time share presentation once many years ago with my husband. We were in Sedona, AZ walking around the downtown area when we came upon a booth selling time shares. All we had to do was go to the presentation and get a $100.00 visa gift card. No strings attached. So we went. We were in a huge room at resort styled condo community with many other couples at tables. Each table had their own salesperson who was trying very hard to get anyone to sign. After an hour I felt my husband wavering and I said that I was done and wanted my $100.00. Of course they tried to get me to stay but I was so done and told them so. I insisted. @@duggydoSince Steve's mostly reading from an article I don't have a problem with anything he said that came from the article. In regards to his own comments I'll just break down what stuck out to me. 1) Dave doesn't recommend people limit credit card usage to emergencies only. The guy absolutely hates debt. Under no circumstances does he recommend even having a credit card, much less using it even for emergencies. 2) Dave doesn't take into account people's interest rates. Dave uses a method of debt payment called the "debt snowball" which involves listing your debts from smallest to largest and paying them off in that order. Interest rates hardly ever come up if at all. 3) Dave's show focuses on the personal behavior of his callers, not the mathematical path that led them to their situation. In fact he regularly tells people they don't have a math problem, they have a "you problem". Steve's characterization of the average call is almost completely foreign to the show. I like Steve's videos but it was frankly bizarre to hear his version of what Dave Ramsey does. He should have either done a little research or just said "I don't really know much about the guy." I'm a relatively new viewer to this channel and kind of assumed he did some research before doing these videos. Of course, I understand he's simply reading an article but the inaccuracies really got me because if he didn't take the time to verify those things it makes me wonder if he does that elsewhere. There's a bit more to this story too that would have really improved this video.

such is the litigious subculture of some not all but a certain portion of some of America and some of America’s lawyers. Yes, a multibillion dollar subindustry of shady greedy lawyers who specifically specialize in exploiting all of the loopholes in the laws whereby, they are able to legally, without breaking the law, bring frivolous lawsuits against companies and individuals. It is, unforunately, a form of legal extortion. Because there are laws that say, frivolous lawsuits are illegal. Extortion is a felony indeed. But these lawyers and their clients are able to stay just underneath the “legal threshold” or line where it would become an illegal lawsuit. I am not a lawyer, but I have heard lawyers explain it this way to me. Crazy!

But surely they didn't amass 3 billion dollars worth of litigation hours. Meanwhile the vets are getting anywhere from 3-20k each for life long injuries. What a clown show. We purchased a Hilton Grand Vacations time share at the Sea World location in Orlando back in 2010. We got rid of it in the fall of 2022. Here's the story: By the time we paid it off, it probably cost us around $10,500 or so. We had "Points" every other year which would be worth about a week's time in Orlando. All in all, we generally used those points about 6 times, plus took a two week trip with the bonus points we got at sale... Fees: On the no points years, our maintenance fees were about $285, on the Points years, they were $900 plus, so if you add those two together and normalize it, maintenance fees averages about $600 a year and remember we could only stay every other year. So here's the math: $10500 Buy in + $600 a year for 13 years = $18,300 for roughly 6 or 7 weeks (averaging 5 nights NOT 7) staying here and there at various locations. Now, back when we bought, you could get a room at a nice place for around $125 a night, now it's $300... Ultimately: Let's say we stayed a total of 38 nights from 2010 to 2022... At $18,300, that comes out to $481 per night!! We agonized over trying to get rid of it. We ALMOST went with one of those "Get out of your timeshare" services, but decided they were all scams... I emailed Hilton and they have a department that allows you to surrender your timeshare back to them and they will pay you "Market Value" for it. The process takes around 6 months... They paid me $915 for it! Read that again, We paid $18,300 for just about 38 nights of stay over 12 years ($481 per night)... Hilton was happy to take it back so they could resell it. They told me the "Market Value" was $915... NEVER EVER AGAIN!

My mother listened to Dave Ramsey a lot, and took a lot of his advice. Before that though, she got a timeshare. She even once looked into Timeshare Exit Team, decided that it probably wasn't for her because they wanted too much money up front. My wife and I took them up on the 3 day hotel stay in vegas to "sit through the presentation." and we did have the intestinal fortitude to say "no" over and over and over and over, and point out why we didn't think they were right about it being a no-brainer good deal. When the 'presentation" started we were all friends, by the time it was over and they saw we weren't budging, the hatred for us was palpable, they weren't going to let us go without trying ugly as well, trying to shame and guilt us in to taking their offer for free without buying in, as if we're stealing food from their kids' mouths. We had just gotten done getting the hard sale on a pots and pans set from "contemporary lifestyles" and weren't about to repeat the same mistake. Getting ugly and nasty doesn't make sense they can just write our names down and not let us take a freebie again, You'd think they'd want couples like us to do the same to their other competitors.

Added to that the RCI fees and lack of trade offs were the reason we tried to get out of it years ago. We probably spent $800.00 between two different resale groups but never heard anything after paying them money. Went to another companies seminar and was told that they couldn’t do anything for us. Timeshare Exit Team, armed with an endorsement from personal finance personality and radio host Dave Ramsey, lured in hundreds of timeshare owners who paid upfront fees of $3,000 up to $9,000 in the hopes of getting out of their contracts. In September 2021, the State of Washington ordered the company (officially known as Reid Hein & Associates LLC) to pay $2.61 million in restitution and discontinue its deceptive practices. I read SOMEWHERE that one of the worst aspects of timeshare property (not holiday clubs) was the maintenance fees, and it seemed as if the only way out of them was to find a buyer for the timeshare and that was impossible as the fees were such a liability. You couldn't even abandon it and it wasn't like a lease that would eventually run out, you were in it for life. @mannys9130
@mannys9130 Год назад
Congrats on getting out of debt! Just keep in mind that Ramsey is wrong about 2 things: First, SOME debt is GOOD debt. Second, credit cards are a fantastic tool that everyone should be using at all times. Debt is a leveraging tool which is very good when used correctly. Buying stuff cash money is fine in the "nothing held over my head" aspect, but you free up a bunch of cash flow by borrowing the loan and making small payments over time at a low interest rate. You can use that remaining cash for investing in growing ventures instead. If you do it incorrectly such as say, going and buying a crappy car at 25% interest for an 80 month loan and paying $5,000 over book value, yeah that's not good at all. But mortgages, reasonable car loans, and student loans are good debts that leverage credit, empower you, and strengthen your credit score big time. As far as credit cards...they are the bomb diggity. The best cards give you big rewards and have no annual fee. You pay nothing to use them. What you do is charge the purchase to the CC and then immediately transfer the payment from your checking account to the CC statement and you pay it off right away. Boom, no interest. No balance reported at closing so low utilization rate. You get the cashback/points/miles rewards though! It's like have a 1-10% coupon for EVERY SINGLE THING that you buy! Who wouldn't jump on that deal?! So when do CCs go bad? That's when people charge a purchase that they don't already have cash for, and let the balance carry over past the statement close date so they get charged interest. Say a dummy with a $1,000 limit CC that charges 25% interest goes and buys a $750 washing machine. They don't pay it off in full right away, so the balance carries over. They get slammed with $187.50 in interest charges and their utilization is reported to credit bureaus at 75% and their FICO takes a huge hit and drops a bunch of points... That's horrible. The $750 washer becomes almost $950. If they make the minimum payment next month, it gets WORSE!!! That is what Ramsey means when he says CCs are bad decisions. The best way to do the above scenario if the person can't pay the $750 in full is to charge it to a new card that has a promotional 0% interest. The compromise way is to charge it to the lowest interest card available and pay a lump sum right away that's as much as they can afford and keep paying toward it until the last minute before the statement closing date. That way the interest is as minimal as possible, and then pay it off completely next month.

Removed all the stress from sitting through that whole meeting. I don't feel bad at all about scamming him because he's scammed so many.

It’s not a scam. You both agreed to the terms. The terms were such that you’d do the spa and sit through a presentation. You delivered and so did he

One thing you may have gotten wrong about how time shares work is that you mentioned you buy a week and then find out you can’t get the week you want. Actually you buy the week you want (ex. 26th week of the year) so you always get that week at the location you buy. Trading for a week somewhere else is the problem as there’s no guarantee. You pay a premium for the best weeks at a location. My parents were fooled into buying 3 of these. You pay annual maintenance fees whether you use the property or not. The maintenance fees go up every year. I learned from seeing their mistakes and knew never to buy one.

Hi Steve, btw, love your show, and, I listened to dave on the radio for 20 years, and he got me out of debt, and because of him, I chopped up the credit cards, paid off the farm, all of 18 years ago, and never looked back!

Congratulations belated. Dave Ramsey gives good solid Biblical advice on finances though he does, I believe, state his advice upfront is by suggestion only. I wish I had followed up on his advice. I’m still in debt.🤔🇺🇸

Dave didn't make money on "time share ads", he made money on ads helping people get OUT of Time Shares. This isn't hard to keep straight.

I remember as a kid going to a time share presentation. My mom is very much a sweetheart and can’t say no so she got talked into sitting through it. We knew we wouldn’t be getting the timeshare. However when it came time to look under your seat to see if you had a hidden gift card I found it under my seat. My mom and me took it and got Chinese food afterwards lol 😂 best timeshare presentation ever.

Perhaps a timeshare in China now would be appropriate.
