man if you grew up in the hood, you have to know how to code switch just to survive.i didnt know i was code switching, same as alex i grew up in phoenix in the hood. maryvale. its funny kids knew race and all that in the hood so little. I was walking to middle school with my 3 black friends. and they were joking but kept saying no offense cause it was a mexican joke, and one of them after a bit said nah stop saying that hes one of us. he was a brother and got re incarnated as a mexican. didnt think of it much then but when i learned code switching was a thing it wasnt much with me cause i grew up with the hood so thats all i know. so to my friends mexican and black im just the hood dude. so much that this girl i dated only dated black dudes and i somehow puled her then. but thats why i fuck with you cause we grew up in very similar situations and the hood. even tho we different races im going to say it it like they told me. you just a brotha that got re incarnated as a korean.
I’m Navajo from AZ who grew up just surrounded by only Navajos on the reservation. And the movies I loved were all Black American movies or music that depicted and told a story of black culture. Aside from the community culture that I lived in, being able to witness black culture’s ability to paint a picture of unity in culture or family was the coolest thing ever to a kid that didn’t see navajo culture represented in media. The creative and rich ways people express where they are from through media is soul-warming. 🔥 loved the storytelling in your movie Gook too David!
