I was there for this, at the Academy, in the nose bleeds, knees pulled up to my chin. What an amazing performance! Bilger is STILL so good.

Beautiful sound and articulation.... That piece is incredibly hard and he makes it look so easy.... Bravo Mr. Bilger... I had the pleasure of meeting you when I first started playing the trumpet. You came to my elementary school and played for us.

When I was young Gil Johnson, the principal trumpet of the Philly, was my idol. Bilger is a fine successor.

The music itself is so complex Mr. Bilger must have the gift of photographic memory! To memorize an extremely "difficult" composition like this, is simply amazing!

This is by far the BEST live performance around. I listen to it all the time as a model for what I want to make the Tomasi concerto sound like. So glad this is on RU-vid!

I remember working on this piece in college, definitely one of the most deceivingly difficult pieces I've ever attempted. It was humbling to say the least. Amazing work here!!!!

I love this performance of the Tomasi. Beautiful sound, colors and articulation. Whenever I am working on this solo, I find myself referencing this performance, along with recordings. This is a very challenging Concerto in our repertoire and Mr. Bilger makes it sound so easy and beautiful. Bravo.

Does anyone knew what C trumpet he performing on in this video? Shires, Yamaha or other? As I understand he's a Yamaha artist now, but he was previously with Shires? Definitely love the solid bold resonant sound and balanced articulation and evenness...bet it was even more so if hearing it live.

Trumpeters could do with some great concertos to add to the Haydn (composers take note). I don't think this is one of them but the soloist is first class.

A pity for the poor sound recording. The orchestra sounds muffled but the trumpet has a lot of clarity and projection! I admire Mr. Bilger his achievement although I don't believe it was his best performance maybe. All trumpeters know that Tomasi is very tricky but nevertheless I was not that impressed by the overall performance both of solist and orchestra. I missed the French charm in the piece as heard when Maurice André for instance performed this.
@1rogerblackburn
@1rogerblackburn 7 лет назад
This video was made (discreetly) from the back of a box seat on a Sony Hi8 format home video camera. David performed this under the rigors of being an orchestral principal which meant that there were other heavy duty pieces required before (morning rehearsal) and after this solo. He also was a featured soloist with the Tomasi on a tour of South America with the orchestra which followed this particular series of performances. I have never heard a more accurate "live" performance in my lifetime and disagree with you that it lacked the "French" charm of André. I'm sure that André's recording was made under a much more relaxed atmosphere than this and with smaller equipment...particularly the mouthpiece. David was using a Bach 1 and a quarter C at the time. I'll never forget his immaculate performance of this during his audition process to become a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra (required rep at the time!). Bravo again, Dave, for all your consistent artistry through the years!

Dear Mr. Blackburn, thank you for your sincere reply. For sure to perform the Tomasi concerto is a real achievement. I surely was impressed by the opening but about certain parts I was less enthusiastic. Audiences might feel this way even on a RU-vid performance. I got the feeling that the orchestra was not that inspired and supporting. Difficult for a solist maybe. Your explanation about this being an audition gives some understanding. Kind regards from The Netherlands, Theo Hartman

continuous brass Saying that you were “not impressed by the soloist” is absurd. Your definition of “French Charm” by Maurice Andrew is simply over blowing and lack of Dynamic control. Playing harder does not make a performance more impressive. Bilger has the perfect amount of finesse and Articulation that makes the piece feel light and weightless even in its most striking parts. Bilger’s dynamic control and articulation are just about spot on and flawlessly portraying this music for everything it was meant for, on top of all the added pressures mentioned above. Reading your arrogant comment annoyed me enough to write this one of my own.
