You can see how being in a place he loves like Japan affects his mood. He seems happy and relaxed in this interview. I hope he was able to go to Okinawa like he wanted. I also really like this hairstyle he sported, which I know he had for Elephant Man. This is the only interview I've seen him have it.
I bought Scary Monsters (US import, sealed) when I was 16 years old back in 1986. My perception of music was never the same afterwards. I miss Bowie at his peak, 70s and 80s, and all the beautiful messages that his art conveyed. I knew back then that in my adulthood such artists would not exist anymore. Something very important is missing these days. Greetings from Buenos Aires.
I love how he said he thought folk music and traditional tribal music would be big in the 80s. But not the synthesizer. Definitely not the synthesizer. In the 80s. Oh, Bowie. You crack me up.
i think he was guessing off the talking heads remain in light, which was working in african music. plus, lets dance was originally going to be a folk album
@@humandroid53 He may influenced , or be influenced by Eno & Byrne - weren't they working in "my life in the bush of ghosts " at the same time in New York? Also see AdamAnt using Burundi drumming. Perhaps he thought it would either too kitch to incorporate/ appropriate those types of music himself? Did he fly every year to Japan (!)?.
By Jesus, even without anything done, no fancy haircut no make up this man was dead handsome. I'm straight as a fiddle stick and even I am struck by it...
It is so nice to see such a respectful interview. A lot of Western interviewers, around this time, try to get Bowie to say or do something sensational. They are a lot more confrontational.
I love the way he hides the embarrassment by smiling and paying attention to the japanese words , trying to understand the awkward situation (when the interviewer is the translator, too) in the most polite way.
Wow, this is great. Bowie at that absolute pinnacle of his career, with the spectacular album SCARY MONSTERS and his broadway performance in THE ELEPHANT MAN. I experienced both as they coincide with the best year(s) of my life!
As usual, totally engaged and engaging, thoughtful intelligent answers to the questions, always he finds the humour of the moment, has a quick crack up to himself cpl of times there.as always he was so sexy and YES mesmerising, always mesmerising even if talking about scary monsters or ancient pop up houses in japan.
