omg! now that this is getting picked up by the algorithm after like two years i should set the record straight about why i picked the clips i did for each respective album so you can better understand my thought process david bowie - off to a strange start. art thou feeling it now? perhaps. perhaps not. depends on if you like music hall space oddity - the hippie album and bowie's first "real" album. salutations! tmwstw - lyrically has a running theme of mental illness or instability, hence "are you ready to go crazy?" as in literally going crazy hunky dory - bowie's first few big hits. it's a big ol' talent show(case) ziggy - the breakthrough record, hence "conquering all artistic media" aladdin sane - basically ziggy's younger brother. bowie is well-known for his androgyny during this period, hence "you're not a woman?" pinups was excluded on purpose diamond dogs - halloween jack is a real cool cat (and he wears an eyepatch) young americans - correction: not a *free-form jazz* record, per se, but a *soul* record. the free-form jazz bit was still the most obvious choice, though station to station - bowie is on tons and tons of cocaine during this period. he "sneaks in" this last album before getting off "the stuff" for good low - cocaine withdrawal album heroes - self-explanatory. bowie's mind is an enigma lodger - eno's oblique strategies cards were used extensively on this album. "move on" is "all the young dudes" backwards, "red money" is a re-recorded "sister midnight" (from iggy pop's the idiot, which is as much a bowie album as it is an iggy pop album) with new lyrics, etc scary monsters - this one is hard to explain so i won't. try interpreting it on an intuitive level based on the vibes the album gives off let's dance - dance? let's! tonight - in the midst of bowie's post-let's dance "pop star" phase. you gotta be kidding me! (tonight still has "loving the alien" and "blue jean," though, so it gets a pass from me. it's fine!) never let me down - generally considered to be bowie's biggest misstep, represented by LRH (played, as it happens, by bowie himself, which is the entire point) tumbling down a flight of stairs for comedic effect tin machine/tin machine 2 - bowie rejuvenates himself creatively after his 80s period by basically inventing grunge before grunge, hence "please hit me as hard as you can"-he needed a smack on the head to get the creative juices flowing again instead of just continuing to go through the motions, as he did with his last two albums. could also be interpreted in a completely different way; you decide! black tie white noise - bowie wants to be an artist in the 90s (he's an artist) outside - apocalyptic in *tone,* not in *quality.* big difference. it's really very good. a concept record about ritual-murder for the sake of art with a healthy dose of anxiety brought on by the impending turn of the millennium, hence the apocalypse "we saved the city!" bit earthling - drum and bass hours - the album artwork features multiple bowies; one i particularly like is the "three bowies and a snake" promo photo. if you know you know heathen - bowie has made lots of albums and this is one of them. he is a hard worker reality - anime eyes the next day - bowie's first album after a ten-year hiatus (reality was 2003, the next day was 2013) blackstar - RIP u
I understand now but I do think BTWN could have been improved, It's more than just bowie "Being an artist" in the 90s it's soulful, political, religious, it relates to the Marriage of him and Iman, I'd say the "will I get married" clip would be better but that's just me
@@HonsieurMerr alright, I personally like it, overall this is the most accurate albums portrayed by video on Bowie that I’ve seen, it’s funny, tongue and cheek, as a Bowie and spongebob fan I definitely got a kick out of it, even with albums I couldn’t quite understand I did get what you were going for particularly the heathen and reality album (I thought the heathen clip related to the overall existentialism and Bowie knowing he was getting old but Bowie giving it all in no matter what, I think heathen was proto blackstar and that reality related to the more happy go lucky and jovial sound to reality but I guess I miscalculated or can these clips have our own interpretation), a couple nitpicks is that some of these were more based off the cover or the name rather than the sound (that usually annoys me) but hey maybe they felt right or were the best clip you found which ain’t bad, my favourite has to be either the heroes clip or the last two albums overall 9/10
I don’t know whats more of a botched opportunity: the fact that Bowie was in SpongeBob musical episode and he didn’t sing, or the fact they didn’t make him a starfish, and called him “Ziggy Starfish”
I'm sure Low and Heroes used them to some extent, considering Eno was involved with those two records as well, but to my knowledge, they were used most prominently on Lodger. You can see this, for example, in "Move On" being "All the Young Dudes" backwards, "Boys Keep Swinging" having the same chord progression as "Fantastic Voyage" (that and band members swapping instruments), and "Red Money" being Iggy Pop's "Sister Midnight" (which Bowie co-wrote, him being heavily involved in Iggy's "The Idiot" album) with new lyrics. Probably other things too, but that's just what I remember from the top of my head.
Where the fuck is pinups. It's a bloody studio album. Stop hating on the album just because they're all cover songs. It was meant to be an album to present Bowie to America and David recorded his most favourite 60s songs, so just let him be happy with it. Besides tin machine ain't even studioalbums by Bowie
my favorite albums are the berlin trilogy ones (low, heroes, lodger) but they can get pretty out there at times. if that's not your inclination, i'd probably start with stuff like ziggy stardust and hunky dory then make your way from there
