Lyrics:
Oh, yeah
Mmm
Still don't know what I was waitin' for
And my time was runnin' wild
A million dead end streets and
Every time I thought I'd got it made
It seemed the taste was not so sweet
So I turned myself to face me
But I've never caught a glimpse
How the others must see the faker
I'm much too fast to take that test
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
Don't want to be a richer man
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
There's gonna have to be a different man
Time may change me
But I can't trace time
Mmm, yeah
I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence
And so the days float through my eyes
But still the days seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're goin' through
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
Don't tell them to grow up and out of it
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
Where's your shame?
You've left us up to our necks in it
Time may change me
But you can't trace time
Strange fascinations fascinate me
Ah, changes are taking
The pace I'm goin' through
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
Ooh, look out, you rock 'n' rollers
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
Pretty soon now you're gonna get older
Time may change me
But I can't trace time
I said that time may change me
But I can't trace time
About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

To me this song is about facing whatever fears you may have in life, whether its something you can or cant control, you have to face it and embrace it because afterall life is full of change and if you arent facing the "strange" to then you will never find your self. Its one of my favourite lyrics, "turn and face the strange" and it means so much to me. Whenever im feeling down or anxious it helps me decide on whats important to me and what will help me be the best i can.

i'm not saying that your interpretation is wrong, in fact most art is free to interpret as you may want, but iirc, David bowie wrote this with the themes because he felt like everyone wanted him to make a specific sort of music, stick to the same rock and roll, but he wanted to experiment and find his own sound. so he's telling everyone to face whats new and not to turn it away.

I'm not a spiritual guy, but I have had a personal connection with this man on the deepest level one can have with a musical hero. Change is always happening. According to Eastern philosophy, which Bowie was into when he was trying on a hippie identity in his young days, states that the only permanent phenomena is change. Bowie was a deep thinker, as well as being a chameleon, corinthians and caricature.

What makes this song so special is it captures perfectly the ambivalence we all have when we have to make changes to our lives and how we cannot go back ("but I can't trace time"). We may try to fake it with small but insufficient ones but to grow we have to face the "strange" (a nice allusion and alliteration to "strain") that change brings. It is up to us to either fake adaptation or embrace it as the only certain thing is that we are going to get older as time passes. Musically it is capture in the unstable opening of the chords and the nice harmonic palette and wide-ranging colors of the vocal delivery in the song (with the influence of the jazz tinged pop songs of Sinatra infusing the song).

'And these children that you spit on As they try to change their worlds Are immune to your consultations They're quite aware of what they're goin' through.' Perhaps we'll always be these children, looking for a way to change whatever it is that troubles our own little worlds. But atleast we have Bowie and his music, and that's amongst the closest we can get to finding a cure for the human condition.

This song came out while I was in high school along with young Americans n fame. Changes was such a pivatol and Influential song for many of us ! It struck a cord. Like so many others. David was very in touch with what was going on with American and British youth. I got to see him in the 1980's by accident. And was so incredible and thoroughly enjoyed His concert. I was Truely a. Fan After that. I was very Sad at his passing and still am. It's sad there isn't muses Like Lennon, Harrison, Bowie And others today! With all the turmoil In the world, the greed, the weather And natural disasters, the shootings where are our Baezs, Dylan's, Mitchell's, CSN's, Young's, Simon n Garfunkel's of Today!!!!! Are. Poets. !!!!! Our. Next John Mellencamp And Springsteen ?

I just listened to this after not having heard it in YEARS. I sang along word for word and cried. On a surface level, it's a deceptively simple song. I guess I forgot how much I loved it, how often I listened to it back in the day. Listening now, it's an erupting VOLCANO of creativity on so many levels, burning genius flowing out of every crack. I can't think of a song that compares to it. What a true giant Bowie was!
