*Interesting Info About Five Years* This is the opening track to The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. An announcement airs that the world will end in five years' time because of a lack of natural resources. The song then proceeds to describe the frenzied aftermath of the announcement. David Bowie chose five years as the length of time following a dream he had in 1971 in which his late father came to him and told him that he had only five years left to live and that he must never fly again. This was recorded in November 1971 at London's Trident Studios. Bowie performed it on the BBC show The Old Grey Whistle Test on February 8, 1972, five months before the album's release. It has been reported that Bowie was going to include this song in his Live Aid set in 1985 but voluntarily dropped it in favor of the showing of the BBC Ethiopia news appeal film. In 2005, Bowie made a rare live appearance at the Fashion Rocks concert in New York to perform this song with Arcade Fire. They also performed "Life On Mars?" and Arcade Fire's song "Wake Up." Bowie's lyric sheet for this song was part of an exhibition devoted to the British rock icon at London's V&A museum. It was interesting to note the scribbled tweaks that shifted "Five Years'" emotional impact. "I never thought I'd see so many people," for instance, became "...need so many people." Speaking to The Quietus in a 2017 interview, he explained why this song contains one of his proudest moments on Ziggy Stardust. "What was wanted was a drum beat to introduce the song itself and to set an atmosphere for the whole album. The idea of the song is that the world is ending in five years, so it was about finding a drumbeat that got that across - which was quite a challenge! I remember going through drum rolls, cymbal crashes and I kind of thought: 'Well if it's the end of the world… I can't be bothered! Haha!' You wouldn't be excited and you wouldn't feel like doing a lot. So, that beat came out of sort of despair and apathy, and then when the band comes in and David starts singing, it just feels right. Thank you for your kind words. It was distressing putting it together but what better vehicle to spread the message than this song. Hopefully David would approve, and let's hope many are sufficiently moved to make immediate changes in their lives. I hope it doesn't come true, however those for whom billions are not enough, and those in power hanging on their coat tails for scraps, don't appear to have any desire to do anything but carry on with their pocket lining crimes. It's almost as if the super wealthy are aware of the catastrophe that is coming and are stockpiling cash in order to monopolise water, oxygen and food when the shortages kick in, and to be able to pay a small army to protect them from those in desperate need. Meanwhile the rest of us and the world's innocent animals, perish. I wonder if the rich have thought about their hired security turning on them when they themselves can no longer feed their own families. On a lighter note, I agree, this is a great Bowie song. I just discovered that another of my favourites of his, 'Wild Is The Wind', like "Amsterdam", was not written by him. Five years is definitely credited to Bowie though. @john brooks Bad news I'm afraid John. Although I can see your comments in YT Studio where I am able to manage my videos, they are not appearing in the comment section of the video. My guess is that the YT deletion software has been changed and an error left in. In other words, some of the stuff you say is causing your comments to be deleted by YT, but only half the job is being done, allowing me to still see them in YT Studio. You yourself may or may not be able to see your own comments on the video. Sometimes YT makes us believe they are still in place and at other times they are just wiped clean away. If you can see them on the video then log out of YT and go back to the video, refresh the screen, and look for them again. They will almost certainly not be visible when you are logged out. With regard to one of the lines in your message where you say: "There is no excuse & no justification whatsoever to stand aside & allow a starving animal to die in agony." Sadly, 8 Billion+ animals are murdered every single day for human consumption, starving or not, and the law prevents us from saving them. Of course we may be able to prevent a few deaths by intervention but once we are incarcerated we can prevent no more and the killing continues. The climate stabalised and enabled civilisation to (unfortunately) develop at 270ppm of atmospheric CO2, in 1972 when 5 years was released there was 327ppm 5 years later in 1977 the level was 333ppm. 1976 was the year of the famous extreme record Heat wave the 1980’s saw regular heat waves all throughout the decade then in the 90’s came the first of the floods!. So David Bowie was spot on, cos those levels of atmospheric CO2 is enough to cause serious climatic changes. The last time the Earth had the current 425ppm was 4.5 million years ago and the Seas were 75 feet higher, so we are only at the beginning of what 425ppm will do!. Now we have 5 years to sequester the excess atmospheric CO2 down to a climate stable level of at least 300ppm from the current 425ppm. Even if we managed that we will still witness the extinction of most life on Earth, as there is a 20 year time lag between atmospheric CO2 level changes and it’s impacts on Earth!.✊🏽🌻🌎
@@Kiyarose3999 It's interesting, I just attended the Climate Reality Leadership Conference in NYC, which was excellent in many ways, but there was one statistic I wasn't sure about. Like you, I"ve heard that there is a 20-30 year lag time, so the effects we're feeling now are the result of CO2 from 2000, but Al Gore said that when we stop burning fossil fuels, (not likely to happen since they control the media, government and military) that heating will stop on that day, and the temperature graph will be flat. Is it that the temperature of the climate will continue to increase for 30 years, or is it the ramifications of the temperature increase will get worse for the next 30 years?

Aw you broke my heart 💔. This is one of my all time favourite Bowie songs and I always wondered why nobody had done this with it but when I actually see it and see that poor bear I just well up. What are we doing?

The bear's story is tragic and I am hoping that non vegans will be able to apply it to the lives of their own loved ones and then to grow to care for the bear and all other animals too. I hope they will wake up soon.
