+Steven Stratton totally, they kill 10 of his songs with constant repetition meanwhile there are SO many great tunes you'll never hear unless you listen to all of album not just greatest hits
***** Well Ziggy was my first so :) LOVE Pin Ups, I think See Emily Play and Friday On My Mind are better than the originals. Sorrow...I mean come on, what a great cover too. Speaking of cover I also liked his version of Let's Spend The Night Together better than the Stones tired version. lol
***** I ultimately think Bowie worked best with Bowie, I don't think he's a "band: type of guy. He needed to drive his own style and call his own shots and thankfully he did . It's funny I've been a fan for many many years and I only came across Arnold Layne recently. Thanks youtube :) ( edit... sorry I was thinking Arnold Corns )
One of the reason's Hunky Dory is such an interesting album is that it was the last album Bowie did before becoming a mega star. When Ziggy Stardust resonated with people, he became a god-like figure. Nobody looked at Bowie like a normal guy ever again. Every Bowie album Ziggy Stardust and onwards were coming from more than a man. That obviously has its appealing factors as we all know. But Hunky Dory features an intimacy and a vulnerableness we wouldn't see from Bowie in a similar way ever again. It was an album from a guy who was down on his luck; Bowie's like us at this point of his life. This is the final album from David Jones. I find the historical context interesting. It's songs from a regular guy on the brink of something great: he has no idea that his life will never be the same again: he has no idea that a guy like him is going to change the world.
Unbelievably well put. The words he spoke were of a man who was well aware that he was emerging into a beautiful phase in his life and that he had something magical to share. I firmly believe that history will record this and Low as the most quintessentially Bowie albums. I could explain my rationale but with your eloquent words previously, I don’t feel it’s necessary to.
you have to listen to this song a few times to really appreciate it... once for the vocals, once for the piano, once for the violin, once for the guitar, a million times for all of them together
I found Bowie at 14 before I did drugs. He made me feel not alone. His songs kept me alive amidst my addiction and found him again sober. Even more relatable now- Bowie is always there through all the changes in your life.
I'm 57 and this still touches my soul.. David ..thank you..I hope you realise the difference you made to so many people..rest in peace you beautiful man x
It is songs like Quicksand that represent the true essence of Bowie's genius . New fans should delve through his early 70s albums and will unearth many more gems like this .
Oh yes , many more . Cygnet Committee ( my fave ) , Memory Of A Free Festival , All The Madmen , After All , The Bewlay Brothers , Five Years , Rock N Roll Suicide , Drive In Saturday , Time , The Prettiest Star , Sweet Thing , We Are The Dead , 1984 , Word On A Wing . Just a small selection from a few albums . So many to choose from.
+burpie Yes this is another his masterpiece!! When I was listening this song first time few days ago I was stunned! Mike Garson said, David has probably 50 great songs and 100 good songs maybe some more. No one come close to him. Such a great loss. He was a genius and a beautiful human being........
Fantastic song. Like you I’m a lifelong Bowie fan so hope you don’t mind me pointing you to these songs: Supermodel Amour ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b1ztgqdHsjc.html Long Way To Go ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HvgQouVo-sc.html
Same here. The tone and evolution of his voice was PERFECT on this album, and there was more honesty and vulnerability in his singing than anything after.
God damn, I wish I would've known about David Bowie sooner. I remember over 1 year ago where my best friend sat and mourned over this man, and I couldn't understand why. I didn't know very many songs from David, why was he so cool? He was a star sure, but nothing big in my eyes. This has all changed for me now. I want to slap myself for thinking such things because this man is taking an affect on my life so much despite him already having passed. No matter where David Bowie might be, his music has changed my life for good. I wish I could've known his beauty sooner, but I will spend my life remembering this amazing man.
Your words have brought a tear to my eye Marie, i discovered him in 1976 when I bought Changesonebowie, i was and have been in awe of his songwriting genius ever since, its only recently I've been able to listen to his songs again without crying, my all time musical hero and there will never be anyone who will come close to his talent ever again guaranteed
oh sweety, if you only could have seen the bowie arc thru my eyes. i'm 65, and got to see the first ziggy tour in 72, memphis. (there's actually a video from that very show posted here on youtube.) the following year, he did 2 back-to-back aladdin sane shows. and i got to see most of his tours thru to the end - reality. and his shit just floors me still. brings tears...
52 now, a Bowie fan over 40+ years, I appreciate your words, but I shall just say it doesn't matter how long it took you to get it, it matters that you got it in the end.
"I'm not a prophet or a Stone Age man, Just a mortal with potential of a superman" Rest in peace David. The greatest artist pop music ever knew. Can't express my love for you and your influence upon me enough. Space Oddity was the first thing I ever learned on guitar. Life On Mars was the first single I ever played. Saddest day.
It wasn't meant as an all defining commentary on Bowie's persona in relation to the Nietzsche/Ubermensch. It was simply recognizing the reference/nod to Nietzsche 's writings in that line. It's been pretty well documented that he was an influence in Bowie's early writings.
This music brought me back from the brink. i was 18 and surrounded by unemployment and drugs and no hope. suddenly i discovered this ray of creative light and realised that there was hope...thank you mr Bowie.
What kind of hope did this bring to you? For me it describes a world that can only hope for either death or disbelief. Why couldn't you hope for that beforehand?
I first came across this masterpiece when I was 18 years old. It floored me then and now I am 55......it moves me to tears. I am so glad you were in my life David. Thank you my friend.
@@TheBerndude plus ... Rise & Fall of ZS ... and Aladin Sane ... totally & utterly floored .. I cover magnificent Bowie on YT ... its my way of connecting to his spirit & karma.
Just got over a nasty stomach flu and the first thing I want to listen to is David Bowie. He is a genius, and I don't offer that up for many musicians. I always say if he never did anything past Scary Monsters, that would be fine with me. He left us a whole decade of brilliance and I never tire of any of it. Timeless.
from 2:27 to 2:50 is the most beautiful piece of melody/harmony I've ever listened to...I ask myself how could he create a piece of music like that. it gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it... Bowie was an absolute genius
I remember what a comfort it was to discover this song and to know this man had been close to the same kind of darkness, and created something of beauty from its shadow.
KNOWLEDGE COMES WITH DEATH'S RELEASE... and now you know. You left us far too soon, Mr. Jones. So grateful I got to meet you briefly with your kind, sweet smile. I wish you well amongst the stars, but could you please come back? I can't imagine this world without you.
"I'm not a prophet or a stone-aged man, just a mortal with the potential of a superman"- such powerful lyrics. It's weird to think of bowie as history as he was always the future. RIP x
Without doubt a masterpiece of an album he never eclipsed Hunky Dory. Rip Mr Bowie you've earned it. you'll live again through the music you left the world. Amen.
The loss is still raw...Every time I think I'm over it, I hear a song and it's always the same, that heartbroken feeling....RIP beautiful man...thank you for the music...
I am supposed to be over this by now. I'm a grown man but damn if my eyes don't moisten when I hear this. My only hope is that the world has finally begun to grasp the immortal talent of my childhood hero.
+Will Ottenfeld You don't need to grow up with Bowie to understand the huge talent he had. Just clicking on this seemingly obscure song confirms you have "mined" the best of the best. His passing very much impacted me and I am not a sentimental sort.
Sophia Watson i know exactly how you feel, i couldn't face listening to his songs for ages after his death, i grew up with all those great songs from the early seventies to his last album, i heard about his death while driving a van full of men to work, i nearly crashed and someone else had to drive, just wanted to go home and think about it on my own so I could let the tears flow freely, this is the first song that came to mind when it all sunk in
This has to be the most over-interpreted song in Bowie's canon. It's not about Crowley or Buddhism or Nietzsche or any of these things. It's about a young man in his early 20s who's reading all this stuff and can't sort it out in his mind any more.
hfelgob I couldn’t agree more. The young man is confused about the meaning of life, and he feels like he’s drowning in quicksand. That’s why the next song is ‘Fill Your Heart.” He realizes that the answer has been with him all along in the form of love.
David's music sets itself apart, and always has. He's been a leader for others to follow. He's charismatic, Immensely talented, and absolutely more gorgeous than any other man I've ever seen.
Farewell Ziggy. May your talent expand in Paradise, the Underworld, the Nexus, Limbo or whatever part of the cosmos or afterlife your infinite consciousness should choose to linger
I can only say that David bowie was a lyrical genius ~ and truthfully, his lyrics shaped my life. From 1970 when I was 12, to today at 63. Dear God, please keep david as an Angel cause I know he was truly a gift from you to all that lives and was born to die ~
RIP David Bowie. I am glad that we share an interest in Crowley and occultism. Your magnificent life inspires me in continuing my magickal/mystical studies.
Thankyou David for inspiring me since the age of 5 and then throughout my life.. Your songs, stage persona, mannerisms, unpredictable re-inventions and ever changing vocal style, you excelled with all. I saw you once, Glastonbury 2003. May you R.I.P. and with all the love of the world be a Star always x
How is it that this B-side could be one of the best and most defining songs of a legendary artist's entire career, and one of the better songs of an entire decade of incredible music?
Does HUNKY DORY actually get the kudos it deserves,,it certainly does with Bowie fans, the song writing ,the way the words are flowing one into another are just a precursor of what was to follow over the years a masterclass of songwriting and stunning songs on brilliant albums,,so personally i LOVE Hunky Dory and still play the ever worn vinyl.
Lý Đào belief vs knowledge. after death we are returned to our true self our substantial form. and with that we are released from the lower ego. and enter the spiritual schools to continue our journey. releasing the body the soul remembers it's true purpose. and whatever was left undone on earth has to now be faced and delt with.
Several attempts at this song, the most interesting is an up-tempo rendition.... this is the definitive considering Mick Ronson's gorgeous string arrangement throughout... Bowie had performed it many times in the latter years, realizing that at his core he is the premiere singer/songwriter of his generation, in spite of his cryptic lyric writing right up to Blackstar... still can't breath when I think he is gone
I agree, this masterpiece is before the Ziggy fever. The lyrics, the vocal, the arrangement is so beautiful. One of his best to my mind, as Bewlay Brothers on the same album. He did this 1997, opened with it, acoustic on his 12-string in the Malmö concert, magical!
@@helgabattaglini2246 right after his death not only this song like before, almost every song made me cry. To this day it is difficult for me to listen to him. For me the world changed after he left. One of the most wonderful people to walk the earth 🙋🏼♀️.
The first song that came to mind when I heard. RIP to the most iconic artist I could ever think of. His music will continue to transcend anything else. The master of reinvention and one of the most prolific artists I can name who kept doing it right every time
I sit on the seat with the clearest view everyday,I'm glad you came by to see us here, without your help the world wouldn't have this amazing 2nd chance.Hi,Hola and hello.
I remember when my older brother played me SPACE ODDITY through the headphones and i thought that was the most artistic, brilliant, and it just sounded way better than anything i was listening too at that time. But i was instantly a BOWIE fan,i had every album he realeased, and i still love him today
I grew up to listening to Bowie (my Mum is a huge fan) and he will always be my favourite musical artist of all time. His music touches me so deeply. This whole album is a masterpiece!
That is the beauty of Bowie! His music hits the heart and you interpret it individually! Will miss him for the rest of my uniqueness! Thanks super man! 💗💗💗
Since first hearing it all those years ago this track and the album it came from remain spellbinding, this is Bowie at his very best,.and that best is magnificent.
There should be a best category on the Grammys for lyrics and this song should get it every year!!! I'm fascinated by Bowie and his phenomanl talent . Beautiful song beautiful man.
It's taken me a while to listen to this again; I still miss him so, the world is not the same. He sang this song 1978 at Sydney Showground, Friday Nov 23. I saw my father die in hospital that day, it was in a way beautiful. But I had to go see Bowie, and it was to him sing this song "don't believe in yourself, Don't deceive with belief, Knowledge comes with death's realise". It was for or from my father...... Bowie is a mystic as well as a beautiful man, singer, musician. I will love him forever.
One of his best songs wonderful lyrics no one better than the master I could list so so many Bowies songs as my all time favorites Lady Stardust Cygnet Committee and of course Quicksand the list goes on and on there will never never be another David Bowie
God's blessings on you Starman. There is a void left with your passing I didn't see coming. I miss you. I miss my youth growing up with your genius talent. Be at peace. Knowledge comes with death's release.
I consider this one of his best songs...top 5 even. It has a healthy Beatles PLUS Lou Reed influence but it's uniquely Bowie. Beautiful, strange & with some very big ideas swirling around behind the lyrics.
i'm not sure he wrote this song ? i'm probably wrong, had a few to many gins ! i know one song on hunky dory was, borrowed , i m prob wrong off to check cheers anyway x
The part where he sings 'Dont Believe in Yourself' is the most exquisite melody in rock history imo. Heart renching and sublime. Also the lyrics ' 'knowledge comes with deaths realease' i listened to that when he passed away and a tear in my eye.
Great memories of this song and album. His singer songwriter phase after this he went in a different direction with Ziggy . Still my favourite Bowie album a work of genius , great work from a young Rick Wakeman on piano whose touch is all over the album.
LoverOf Great Music Yeah.. how sad. My favourite early Bowie LP and this (along with Bewlay Brothers and Andy Warhol) my favourite songs on it. Though I like them all.
Objecting to this has gone from something that irked me, to something I now find mildly offensive. (well, in an internet chatty kind of way) RIP David. You were an inspiration
