Live at Dickinson Road Studios
Manchester, Rusholme, England
January 3rd 1973
Broadcast recording
Video Quality - A+
Sound Quality - A+
Special Event - Top of the Pops
David Bowie and The Spiders from Mars make a rare televised appearance on the popular UK television show "Top of the Pops" playing a kickass version of Jean Genie. This session was initially lost to time but one of the camera operators kept a copy and in December of 2011 it was broadcasted on the BBC. Rarely would acts play live on the Top of the Pops but David insisted. The quality is excellent for a recording of this age and it takes place just 2 days before the small UK tour which kicked off in Glasgow on January 5th. Special thanks to Sea Horse for the thumbnail.

The Hull Mafia! Mick Ronson on guitar and Woody Woodmansey on drums - they both came from the only rock band in Hull in the late 60's The Rats. I knew Mick reasonably well as I was seeing his sister, often.

Actually it's a collaboration between Paul and John. John gave Paul most of the credit on writing this song, and Paul, in his usual non-confrontational way, said it was a collaboration between him and John.

Remember watching this like it was last night. I was 12 and at school the girls in our class had Bowie hair cuts within days dying it that deep red colour. Carol become a Bowie freak leaving T-Rex & and Marc Bolan behind. All her text books got a make over with Bowie pictures out of Jackie magazine. Her friend Pat joined her after a week. When he played the city Hall people from school went who had shown no interest in pop music ever. Something happened that Thursday night back in 73 which can't be explained. It was mass hypnotism or brain washing. He went from the bloke who sang "the laughing gnome" who no one took serious to a huge cult following overnight from one 3 minute TV appearance. Faster than The Beatles, bigger than The Rollers.

Only Bowie could sum up NYC with a couple of lines like NYC’s a GoGo and everything tastes nice! My sister visited NYC for the Macy”s Annual Parade and she brought me back some Food from a genuine NY Deli. It was delicious and fresh! I was surprised how good it was. NYC has quality Cuisine. No doubt about it! And it is fast living with parties going all night in the Clubs! So Bowie experienced it and summed it up like a great songwriter does! 👏🏻🎸😎

Possibly the most honest rocking band-together performance of DB & the Spiders - at least that I've ever seen. How amazing would it have been to see the band live in '72 and especially in '73? They just knocked the spots off anything and anyone from that golden era. The band's and Bowie's growth from Ziggy (i.e. actually late Hunky Dory in reality) to Aladdin was huge.

This is awesome!! I never got into bowie all that much, but I have realized his greatness in recent years... I really thought that Black Star was amazing, transcendence musically... preparing to return to harmonically vibrating stardust 💫⭐🌟 And this song right here is awesome... It seems like he is taking over for the Stones after they hit their peak of greatness with my favorite album "EXILE ON MAIN STREET" 💫 This has a lot of the same bluesy and slightly psychedelic swagger that the Stones had in 72...
