Last year's collaboration between St. Vincent (Annie Clarke) and David Bryne was surprising on many levels. The album they wrote and recorded together, Love This Giant, is inspired and artful, if not as immediately accessible as some of the solo work each of them has made in the past. On stage, performed live at the Strathmore music hall in Bethesda, MD, the songs found their heart and soul. A band of brilliant brass players made the tunes swing a lot more than they do on the record.
Love This Giant allowed both Byrne and Clark to make songs that were slightly out of their comfort zones; they dug into less familiar territory and found something fresh. When performed live, new songs such as "Who" and "I Am an Ape" sound powerful. But old favorites also surfaced from their solo catalogs, whether it was Talking Heads' "Burning Down the House" or the Byrne-Eno collaboration "Strange Overtones," or St. Vincent performing "Marrow" from her 2009 album Actor.
All of these performances became less about nostalgia or their individual fame, and more about creation and building on something great, from a pair of strong creative souls born 30 years apart.
As you watch the performance, keep an eye out for Kelly Pratt, formerly of the band Beirut, on lead horn, as well as fantastic synchronized dancing choreographed by Annie-B Parson. You can also see Byrne and Clark rehearse for the concert in this special video from our In Practice series.--BOB BOILEN

It is not only David and Annie, it is also this brass band that makes this consert so superbe. The way they orchestrate and dance to their own rhythm is just wonderful. As if words and melody and orchestration is a complete unit.

I am awestruck by every aspect of this concert - the instrumentation, choreography, lyrics, staging, and musicianship. Watched this more than a dozen times now... this experience is so much better than what was committed to the "Love this Giant" album - Byrne's vocals are not produced to the point of castration anymore and there are real drums and the brass players are really fucking good... Which speaks volumes about how shitty the process of production is these days as well as accentuating how talented the composers/musicians actually are outside of studio moulding. Best. Shit. Ever.

Wow.... it truly all came together at this performance.... better than the album, and far better than the performance at the Ryman Auditorium. They really should release this as "Love This Giant - Live !" with the caliber of not only these performances, but with this level of recording and mixing. Even a DVD/CD set would be a huge seller, I believe, as this is just such an awesome production, recording, and historical event.... just the highest level of professionalism on this occasion on the part of everyone involved.... a totally awesome performance, recording, and collaboration in every way...! Definitely 5 Golden Discs for this one....

Man...every single song sounds WAY better live. Honestly, when I first listened to the studio album, I was disappointed. The songs were good...but lacked much energy and soul. But live....they sound TOTALLY different. Especially "I Should Watch TV" which I think is Byrne's best vocal delivery in decades. Not to mention...great lyrics. And I love the title. "I Should Watch TV." Clever. :)

(looking down on the papers), no, we have not missed you, you are not there. "I am here" No, you are not there, in our papers. "But I am here, can´t you see?" In our papers you are not there, that is what counts. Do you have an ID-card? No, I supposed so. To everything there is a turn, turn. First to the left, then to the right. And then spinning around.

I was at this show. I remember being a little disappointed by it. Seeing it here 11 years later, I wanted to like it more than I did at the time, but I still feel the same. Although David Byrne has not simply devolved into a nostalgia act like so many aging popular musicians, he is long past his prime, which pretty much ended abruptly in the mid-80s. I saw Annie do a hot show at the 9:30 club a couple years before this, but she was a lot less interesting on this night. But the collaboration was a good idea, and I appreciate that they made the effort. And maybe I was missing something. Most of the audience seemed to be more into it than I was, and they didn't appear to be just a bunch of fools.
