Older David Byrne does seem less tense, less nervous and more fun than younger David Byrne. He's finally relaxed. And his creativity continues. His last album was excellent, and this show sounds insane in the best way. Great interview, Seth.

My spouse and I saw the remastered “Stop Making Sense” in the theater last weekend- magnificent! David Byrne is one of those artists who feels like an incandescent being from another universe when he performs. Amazing.

I watched it on Amazon Prime a couple years ago, so I'm guessing it wasn't the new remastered version. It was fascinating to finally see it after listening to the album for years. I'd love to see it again with remastered sound.

@michaeldougherty6036 no, this new version just came out this year for the film's 40th anniversary. It is playing in theaters for another week still and if at all possible I implore you to try to catch it. I had watched it at home for years, I went through a period in college where I put it on every single day, I was absolutely obsessed. And the first time I saw it in a movie theater I was astounded because it was an entirely new experience. When you see it in the theater it's like you're in the audience at their actual live show. This is largely due to the clever camera work which doesn't show the audience until the very end (and ideally most of the movie theater audience is dancing, as they should be). But it was amazing! I saw it in theaters at lease 3 times since, including a screening with Jonathan Demme, and I saw the premiere of this new version in a theater for the live IMAX event which was beamed all over from the Toronto International Film Festival on 9/11. And once again, it was a freshly phenomenal experience. The sound and picture are PRISTINE. Honestly it was mesmerizing at times. So yes, enjoying the remastered version at home will still be well, enjoyable. But if you can catch it in the theater, you will be in for an immersive visceral experience that you will neither regret nor forget! I am going to see it at least once hopefully twice before its run ends on the 15th.

Saw Talking Heads in 1983 - the same tour that is captured in Stop Making Sense - and it still stands out as the best show I have ever been to. His new Boradway show seems to be feeding off that same vibe - the audience was on their their feet the whole time. I remember it being involentary, that you could not help it, especially the first half when the band is slowly built up. The audience was part of the show.

HERE LIES LOVE is a brilliant show and an incredible experience. there has never been a broadway show like it. do not miss it. you have never seen anything like it. it has all the outrageousness of something David Bryne and Fat Boy Slim. It is also an incredible look at the People's Power Movement revolution moment in the Philippines. GO SEE THIS SHOW!

In the mid-eighties I biked to a theatre in my hometown Honolulu, HI. When I tried to buy a ticket for “Stop Making Sense.” The cashier warned me that the movie was a CONCERT not a regular movie. I said “Yeahh?!” She said a lot of people got angry and wanted their money back. Oh-Vey!!

Not to be the negative voice here, but Mark Knopfler painted the Imelda picture decades ago. "Golden Heart" is the album. I appreciate Byrne's early songwriting, but his treatment of his former colleagues speaks volumes (no pun intended).

It's much more fun to perform music where people are 'actively participating' in the experience--it becomes a shared pleasure rather than a clinical/critical spectator-sport. Give me a revelrous group of sing-along-ers any day and i'll play for hours, but tell me i have to walk into a crowd of quiet, still people and i don't know what to do with myself.
