No one else could have done Mommie Dearest with you, Ryan. David Del Valle is one of the most honest, forthright defenders of old Hollywood. Such a treasure!

What a phenomenal way to start the day Ryan. Seeing David Del Valle reckoning with Mommie Dearest, I'd pay dearly to see this conversation and yet it's free. Thank You. My Monday (lest favorite day of the week) is made!! "Faye Dunaway's version of Strait-Jacket." Coffee through the nose on that line. Perfect!

It's more historically accurate than Braveheart. It's an adaptation of the book. Some scenes conflate accounts in the book for dramatic effect. As to the accuracy of the book only the people in the book know that so jumping to the conclusion that none of it is true is as much hearsay as saying it's all definitely true.

Another bio-pic I'd file under TOTAL FICTION is "The Buster Keaton Story" but on the good side, it bought him a nice plot of land and big house.

Faye Dunaway, in an retrospective of Joan Crawford's life and career on Turner Classic Movies expressed her shame for ever having associated herself with "Mommie Dearest". It IS a tour de force performance by Dunaway, but the film, and the book were nothing but a hatchet job that was NOT supported by the truth. It's an incredible film, BUT It should NOT be taken as biographical. 11:08 The commentator has the wrong end of the stick regarding the comedic styling of Batman '66. "Campy" translates into "So corny it's funny", it's different from "High Camp" humour. Campy is unintentional, like the dated dress of a barbershop quartet. High Camp is INTENDED to be humorous, by taking the ludicrous, and playing it in all [exaggerated] seriousness. Leslie Nielsen's performance in Airplane was classic high camp. No matter how insane things got, he still played his part 100% straight. That's what made it funny. 60's parlance is more nuanced than most people understand, and mistakes like this are common.

Faye Dunaway is famous for slapping faces? They even made a parody/appearance with Crawford slapping men across the face in a film, and what about "Id rather have cut off my hand" She won an Oscar for that face slap.

And they did that in I think one or two take.. Anne Blythe stated that Joan dreaded doing that scene and afterwards apologized to Anne. Anne always had nice things to say about Joan. She even balked at having to slap Joan during that confrontation over Veda's deception and manipulation that resulted Joan/Mildred ripping up the check and Veda slapping her mother.

@creativewriter3887 She practiced the slaps on her nanny/assistant Carol Anne, with real slaps. Crawford was no sweet heart, she'd fought monsters for years in Hollywood. She knows how to win, the hard way, and never forget it. She was one tough broad, and proud of it. Some folks thought she was a man in her time for her broad shoulders, and attitude. She brought tough girls into existence. She's a hell of a dame, and a game changer for masculine women throughout time. #butchqueen

@@GoodGuy-wq4md I'm not disputing that. I am saying that while she was tough and formidable, when it came to younger actresses/actors, she was generous. My words about her exchange with Anne Blythe comes from Anne Blythe's own words on a Turner Classics Movie interview about "Mildred Pierce" and her interplay with Joan Crawford during those scenes. Even years after the film, Anne Blythe had only charitable and glowing things to say about Joan Crawford and considered her a friend. Crawford was tough but this constant portrayal of her as some sort of bitch is not fair; especially when at the time of Mildred Pierce, she was deemed "over" and a "diva" but she willingly subjected to a screen test and because of her talent and her vulnerability she got the part and it jump started/revitalized her career. That is what I am saying-- she was tough and she was generous and engaging. Even during her interviews in the '60s, yes, she was tough but there was a warmth and articulation about her. Sorry for the missive.

How the fuck does this guy know if Joan Crawford’s daughter was abused or not?.I don’t know.I wasent there. And either was he..Just because he’s obviously enamored with old Hollywood doesn’t mean Crawford wasn’t abusive.

But after a while you give it a rest. Toxic Tina had advantages many many people NEVER have. I mean, she goes on about how she hated her mother, but ironically she loved the Crawford name as is she was Tina Turdstone in Tulsa OK no one would have given a rat's a@@ about her story. She's made a 45 year CAREER off of slagging her mother and ruining her legacy. As I've said above, not even Holocaust victims or even Viet Nam veterans (who should get a stage to tell their stories) aren't even afforded a FRACTION of the attention this spoilt brat has gotten.. the fact that this is her ONLY claim to fame and the fact that she got her a@@ sued by her two sisters is proof that not everyone believes her. Yes.. we ARE to believe the victims, but she's changed the stories over and over and often between interviews (listen to the early interviews BEFORE the book became a movie and then after).. and then she kept adding to it after the fact.. proof that it's not a biography anymore but rather a Mother Slagfest Series..and I think we're now on the 5th edition.. Regan from the Exorcist spewed less Bile.

Christina Cryford... I mean, Crawford hated this movie, but there you go. Yeah.. Christina stated she hated her mother and such, but she didn't hate it enough NOT to make a 40 plus year career of slagging her mother with her "Greatest Hits" Tour. She was insanely jealous of her mother’s success and legacy. And even though Joan Crawford did try to facilitate her daughter’s career, but because Toxic Tina couldn’t take direction, would NOT even compromise and threw her weight around, many, many hated her. Then she was wondering why she didn’t have a career. She slagged her mother for decades; every few years vomiting up “new details” about her pathetic life (POST Joan Crawford) which, if you stop to really think about it, is her only claim to fame. Not even Holocaust victims get/got the amount of money and attention this woman has gotten. And if “Mommie Dearest” didn’t ruin Faye Dunaway’s career, then Bette Davis’ unabashed comments on Johnny Carson about Dunaway’s unprofessionalism sealed it. And Bette hated her so much, that it FORCED her to contrast Dunaway with Joan Crawford herself; Davis praising Joan’s professionalism, punctuality and work ethic.

Yes, Christina likes to say that her mother had her blackballed from Hollywood, but there were numerous reports from people that said that Christina was an entitled brat. Two people in particular that reported this was Myrna Loy and Richard Benjamin. Heck, she was physically thrown out of a party by Elvis Presley because she acted like a complete brat, including breaking his cigars and throwing a drink on Elvis himself because he rebuffed her advances.

@@Jennifer_Lewis_Beach_Living OMG.. yes!! I read that and about her brattiness and her thinking she was some kind of sex symbol. Some one quipped "She may be a Crawford, but she is NOT Joan". I'd go even further.. she's not even Christiana Number 1 because Joan's first daughter was also named Christina, but the real mother wanted her daughter back so Joan had to return her to her mother.. So technically, Toxic Tina was a Middle child.. it makes partial sense.. lol

Lucille Faye Lucerne was told by MGM that she needed a name change. They proclaimed her as Joan Crawford. She hated it. She thought it read as Crawfish, but MGM prevailed, and now we have the mockery of her adopted name, and her adopted child Christina's name. Grow up. Please have respect.
