Ten years ago today, Monsanto announced that it was purchasing the Climate Corporation, a company using "machine learning to predict the weather and other essential elements for agribusiness," for $1 billion.
But how did it come about? How did founder and CEO David Friedberg reach that valuation, which has proven pretty much elusive to our industry ever since? How has our industry changed in its aftermath? And what's coming next for agrifoodtech?
It's been quite a journey for David Friedberg since this game-changing deal and he's now better known for being a "bestie" on the All-In Podcast alongside a few of his heavyweight venture capital friends. He is also running his own investment company, The Production Board, which is likely to be looking for exits of its own soon.
As part of a series of articles, videos, and features to mark this big anniversary, and that of AgFunder's, which is coming up later this year, AgFunderNews managing editor Louisa Burwood-Taylor sat down with David Friedberg to look back at the deal that changed the course of agriculture and food technology and look forward at what's to come next.

Friedberg has an unusual gift for conveying both science and business development. That really comes through in this interview. The all-in podcast “science corner” is often treated as an irrelevant curiosity, and to Friedberg’s credit he always takes the high road and still manages to get the ideas across

He is amazing , such an incredible depth of skill and knowledge, but you feel the wisdom and clarity also coming through. What a mind and how powerful a resource as an investor he would be.

It’s amazing how humble David is, a lot of us who watch All In doesn’t know about this because he never mentions it.

David is brilliant and I very much appreciate his capacity for systems thinking, science , and business. The piece that I think is unappreciated is that food isn't simply about calories. The industrialization of food and synthesis of food products has led to unintended consequences and aberrations in human biology. Obesity and chronic disease continue to rise and strongly correlated to modern manipulation of food systems. As a clinician there is a fundamental axiom that I have witnessed time and time again, disrupting an aspect of a natural system in isolation tends to lead to dysfunction to other parts of the system.

Very inspiring to see the history of Climate -- because we founded a company similar to Climate in 2018 in Germany without being aware of that, and without really knowing their journey. So great to see how somebody went the same path 10 years earlier than we did.
