This is beautiful, but you owe it to yourself to listen to the Pulse version = goosebumps. The most under played and underrated Floyd tune IMO.

Tens of thousands of guitar players can play those notes. Millions of singers can sing those notes. None of them would sound like Gilmour.

A beautifully crafted performance, Gilmour doesn't get anywhere near enough credit for the way in which he orchestrates and directs backing singers.

There is another performance from this concert that you should check out. Richard Wright (also of Pink Floyd) joins David on stage and they perform a song from one of Richard's solo albums called "Breakthrough." Great performance and a good look into the musical chemistry between those two.

I would love to see your reaction to "Smile". His wife Polly wrote these lyrics also. The best version is on the "On an Island" live DVD.

Just to clarify, Polly is only associated with some of Floyd lyrics on their final two original albums from '87 and '94. Roger Waters was the band's primary Lyricist for most of their career. He is widely recognized as one of the greatest lyricists in all of rock. This session having been recorded some time in the early 2000s, this song from 1994 would indeed have been "a blast from the past" by that time. And yes, you really should avail yourselves to the amazing Pulse version of this song.

Just to piggyback on your comment, this is from one of the Meltdown concerts he did in 2002. They were a series of stripped down and intimate shows at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

@@ianfortier6796 It was the Robert Wyatt Meltdown Festival and this was at the Royal Festival Hall not the RAH, very different venues, RAH with a capacity of 5000 odd is not very intimate.

Polly and David didn't meet until after his divorce in 1990. She was only involved in the Division Bell and his solo albums.

Hey you lovely couple, I consider David Gilmour to be a multi-talented musician because he not only does excellent guitar work, but also composes, writes lyrics and arranges excellently. Although this song for P.F. and also for D.G. relationships is very short, but it is still intense and full of love. Thanks for sharing and best wishes @all from HH (Germany)

You are going to hear from Dave for sneezing during him playing. There is some videos of Dave in the Abbey Road Studios playing in front just a few people. no light show. "the Blue, on an island, take a breathe, smile, acoustic short version of echoes". David Gilmours "barn jams" 121, 166, over 200 where recorded " Just Dave, Guy, Rick, Steve in a barn jamming, no singing and his wife Polly taking pictures. Pure Music.

Gilmour wrote this song in 1993 and included it on the 1994 Pink Floyd album The Division Bell. The lyrics of the song also belong to Gilmour. Gilmour has said (as can be heard at the end of the song) that the song was written about his wife, Polly. David and Polly were married in 1994 during Pink Floyd's Division Bell tour. So, what you say is correct in a way. His wife is responsible for these lyrics. But not because she wrote it herself :))

Great reaction you two. This song is very uplifting. I was actually going to request through the buy me a coffee link the live version from Pompeii. It is from his show in Pompeii from 2017. He was 70 or 71 yrs old at the time. That whole concert is just very special given his age and the new nuances he adds to his songs. I will request the "High Hopes" from the Pompeii performance. I know you have reacted to this song before, but it is well worth it. You will see.

Over 30 years ago , David Gilmour was the sole reason that I had to play guitar and that it had to be a Fender Stratocaster. It sits beside my couch and I will never sell it.

This song is my anthem. It starts so sad and in a way complaining. The point is stay in the past with all them pains or kill the past and live in the moment. Everyone has baggage, let Newton handle it and move on.

David alone is good, but the rest of Floyd are very important for the final sound. That sound that creates new galaxies, parallel worlds and reaches our soul so deeply. If you listen to the band's version, you'll understand.

I only knew this from the pulse concert, where he plays it on a Stratocaster. In this intimate arrangement, with an acoustic guitar and the harmonies done by a background choir, the song is even more compelling.
