David Gilmour is the best guitar player of all time. I don’t care what anybody else says...he is. He is just absolutely amazing on the guitar, the best. His voice and guitar playing can bring out so many different emotions. Sigh....simply amazing
@@alwaysright3718These arguments are really rather stupid. Even Jimi said that Rory Gallagher was at least as good as he was, if not better. Jeff Beck was great. Clapton is great. Robben Ford is great. All their styles are pretty different, though. Gilmour's style is totally different from Jimi's. His style is more eclectic than Jimi's was. I think maybe Jimi would have Gimour beat in terms of his blues playing, perhaps. I dunno. But Gilmour is also adept at acoustic, slide guitar, and even pedal steel work. Jimi wasn't. You can play these stupid games all day long. It's meaningless. Even with Dave, Floyd would call gonzo players like Lee Ritenour in for tracks on The Wall, for example. You get the right man for the right job. Gilmour has no peer in terms of the type of guitar styles that he is best at. Jimi may have been one of finest raw talent guitarists ever, but he fucked up because he couldn't control his addictions and stupidity. Oh well. We'll never know if he was the best because he died so young. Maybe. Was Hendrix fantastic? Of course he was.
Pink Floyd will always be the greatest band ever. Pink Floyd is not just music, but it is art and even a style of living. What made them awesome was the contrast in the voices and styles of Gilmour and Waters. Waters brought on an intense style with his voice and music while Gilmour brought on a peaceful and smooth style. When they put those two contrasting styles together it was a match made in heaven. Truly the best.

Gilmour at his best..center stage, singing and playing from his soul. Add that his rig setup/sound is always on top of it all. Saw PF back in mid 70's at Los Angeles Sports Arena. They had huge speaker array stations circling all the interior seating...their music rotated around in circles..mind blowing.
I cry every time I watch this. The message is so profaned, if only people would listen. 😢 Gilmour is the man. I have been singing his praises for years. Was privileged to see him on several occasions with Floyd, (Animals and Wall) and solo. He rules!
Gilmore is simply brilliant, the duality between the progression and the lyrics that bares to never accept suffering as well as to challenge the existential hope that is within. You are a prophet of words.
Now folks, I am a 70 yr old acid head who has seen and listened to Floyd (Gilmour) since their inception both in UK and abroad on many occasions. Taken in context of the times of their inception they are a band that can perform over the times and mood, evolving as the times roll on. I don’t want to get into band dynamics, as I wasn’t there. Although I was in Aachen in 1970 when Floyd, Traffic, Deep Purple and a little known Principal Edwards Magic Theatre played. Oh the days of my youth. Don’t analyse, or as Sinead O’Connor says ‘’ Listen Without Prejudice’’.In my time, Floyd and 1000 mcg of California’s best Purple Haze was a good time. Enjoy the music of YOUR life. Boomshankar
Gilmour was really on top of his game here. Probably one of the best live solos I've heard for this song. His pinch harmonics from 3:19 to 3:25 sound amazing.
Er, this song is from the 1987 Momentary Lapse album. Well yes, it's a song, and a very good song, I believe. I think it's the best song on that album, besides perhaps Sorrow. I was never that knocked out by that album overall, but this is my top song from it. It's extraordinarily moving. Dave's solo is unbelievable. I've been practicing it a lot at home here recently using a Zoom guitar processor to try to make it easier to dial in his tone, sort of, and play all the sections in one go, and it's a challenge! But it's great fun.
I missed my chance back in 90 something I think maybe, anyway this is before the internet, a friend of my who was really into music told me I shouldn’t go because you know who wasn’t in the band and said it’s not Pink Floyd without him, it wasn’t until later that I found out Pink Floyd sounds like Pink Floyd because of David Gilmore, ironically I can careless usually what the words are in a song, half the time you can’t understand rock lyrics anyway, so is life , missed opportunity and not missed
Outstanding song and outstanding lengthy solo. Almost like a long drawn out miles davis piece. What impeccable rendition and what a lucky small group of people that got the experience of this great song and man playing it.
totally love this song... love all of David Gilmour....... solo albums and love Syd too.. A total Pink Floyd fan,,,they are in the top ten artists to sell over 250 million albums... long live the legacy...:)

Remember when I was 8 years old, my father burned a copy of Delicate Sound of Thunder for me. My first taste of Pink Floyd. This and Shine on You Crazy Diamond were my favourites. That introduced me to a relationship that is still there - and will be there forever!

i love the feel to this song, the words give hope of what could be, while the guitar solo says instead "this is our world we must make it a better place in anyway we can or we will lose it" unlike roger who makes the words too damn forcfull, dave instead keeps the words light but makes the music do all the talking to the heart instead of to the head.
The solo sounds similar to the ones he played on the earliest shows in 1987, before he "turned on" the "autopilot" mode for the remainder of the 'Momentary Lapse of Reason' tour. The solos in 'Comfortably Numb' and this one, were out of this world in 1987, some nights. Much, much improvisation.
+SilverTounge85 agreed also during 1988 he did some killer solos on this song and CN of course there were nights were david and the band were on autopilot but other nights the band were on fire. 1994 IMO they were on auto pilot alot more most nights then on the AMLOR tour.

Yeah agreed I think you can tell he's not happy with his tone... He wasn't really into the solo till about the half way point. His playing seemed off and didn't flow as well
@@stephenasbridge878 this isn't correct. on 1990-1992 performances, he didn't use anything other than rat. not even muff. just a compressor, rat, eq, chorus, delay. normally he'd boost it. but he doesn't even have an overdrive on his board for this performance.
@@mustyguitar still you can see something is wrong he got to his amp in the middle of the solo to tweak it and a bit later played with the exg on his strat
this is the best live version on youtube. the ones from the sound of thunder stuff has too much backround singers and not enough keyboards, the ones from the pulse stuff is just boots but this is perfectly balanced. its a shame the best version of the emotional and beautiful tune does not have the rest of the floyd in it. would have been way better with rick on keys. the singers are perfect though, not too loud yet you can feel their presence.
