When people are skeptical about technology taking away their jobs, they are not coming from the same stand point as David Graeber. I think he might misinterpret their fear. It seems to me less of a fear of freedom, but rather the fear of losing freedom, as they think in this pattern: no job = no money = no freedom = suffering = no surviving. If people can be sure to be looked after having enough good (!) food, water, shelter, community, while they are jobless or with hours drastically reduced, I think they would actually experience that as freedom. However, I am not saying that people who are stressed out about finding what it is they want to do in life, don't exist. They sure do. But I am pretty sure that this stress (fear) is simply caused because they can't figure out what it is they want to do and what fulfills them with a meaningful activity to do while they on top have to figure out a plan how to make an income to survive.

I think there's also a more active role of ideology here, especially in the minds of people. I mean, most already fear any systematic change, and they tend to vent the hatred towards those who promote those changes. So they learn their positive conservatist counterproposal which is mostly a myth about how the current system is unbeatable and every other possible alternative has already failed. But they don't want to see that conditions for a change are already present in their own system so change could be mostly organic in nature.

A world of leisure & wealth is at hand ? Really, for who ? Is he blind to the level of inequities ? To the fact that this wealth is extremely unsustainable & will only last so much before climate catastrophy gets 90% of human beings & animals into unimaginable suffering ? Can't stand these privileged people. He's a disgrace to anthropology science to have such a short timescale vision.

Graeber thought on very long time scales. His point is that we can change our social relations which means defacto shifting wealth distribution and finding ways to put all the great knowledge and advancements we have to use in a way that benefits people and the planet.

"Everybody gets part of the wealth." ... This is just beyond naive.
@5e1enium
@5e1enium 5 лет назад
I don't think Graeber believes this will be inevitable or even easy - he's just suggesting imo that there's no reason, capital pressure aside, it shouldn't be possible.
@iprentovski

Everybody already has part of the wealth, but it's being taken away by a few.
@DinoCism
@DinoCism 5 лет назад
I mean if you think he's saying "they will" as opposed to saying "they should" you are the naive one. Obviously he's talking about how this wealth could be distributed in some sort of socialist society. The guy is an anarchist. If he believed what you implied he believed he would be an ardent capitalist.

Rich people can't share equally, if they would they wouldn't be rich any longer. They are necessarily unethical and everyone knows they are. They could feed and house people for generations to come and what do they do? They let them die on the streets everyday. Left to their own in a world that was created by the extremely greedy.
