I photographed some of David's work prior to this interview (Richard who was at the beginning of the video is David's photographer, but he was traveling with David, so I got the opportunity to photograph the work for the Some New Pictures catalogue (1989). The poster of West Hollywood on the wall in this video was probably made from my transparency.) The gouaches here look pretty good for 1990s video transferred to RU-vid. But of course flatter and a bit drab. I shot film -- 8x10 color transparencies. I also photographed the paintings of Ed Moses which were during this same time quite bright and colorful. Ed painted mostly oil on canvas but he also made some gouaches that looked almost exactly like his oil on canvas colors. On the film (not as wide a color gamut as the higher quality digital) the oils would be muted (sometimes shifts) while the almost exactly similar gouaches looked very bright and very accurate. (We used to say, you really can't photograph a painting but you can get close.) The reason gouache did so wall on film is they're both dyes. Oil paint can be anything from dyes to metal to stone powder, so how the three dye layers of film responds to them and how our eyes respond can be quite different.

This is probably what it would have been like to talk to Di Vinci. In the present but with visions of what the future could or should be. The range and depth of his intellect and talent is incredible. The interview is a bit awkward but it's clear they have spoken before and this is sort of continuation of past discussions.

This is maybe the most subdued and relaxed Huell Howser ever. I’m guessing the single shot unedited nature of this episode was imposed by Hockney or at least discussed beforehand with Huell as the fastest way to get the job done with least amount of b.s. As David says, “I want to be in charge if I do something.” Regardless of the answer, Huell and Louie pull this off perfectly. Did they ever do another single shot show after this one?

When you interview a Master you have to drop your own ego amd immerse yourself in the world of that expert not dwell upon the state of his sink or point out a TV that is never used,such trivial observations are not required,sadly Hockneys art was glossed over in such a trivial way and I for one would rather bring about questions of interesting techniques and elaborate on the technology being introduced into Hockneys studio,truly a missed opportunity of rambling shallow questions making a poor job,even Hockney seemed unimpressed.

Huel Howser was a fixture on PBS LosAngeles in the 70s thru early 90s. He presented these human interest video essays from viewpoint of his folksy Everyman. Think he was originally from Oklahoma. As a number of ppl mentioned, he's a little out of his depth here with Hockney - an extremely versatile multi-media creative artist & master of color, composition and perspective. As Huel hinted, they may have been personal acquaintance; both were residents in Palm Springs - a well known Calif arts community.

I'm wondering if the only reason you regard the painters you mention to be masters is because you've either read that or or been told. Historically, they may very well be, but that's about it for you. You like and enjoy them, but can you ever explain why, even to yourself? There's a lot of people interested in art who basically just like to get inside a gallery to get out of the rain for a few minutes, they're not _really_ so they crib a few names out a book.
@lluhu
@lluhu 2 года назад
@@eustacequinlank7418 In case you want to know: I've been told so by professionals/historians through my education, books, documentaries...and after, once I understood their arguments, I agreed with them. Some experts also told me that Hockney is a master, but in this case I didn't agree. I happen to listen to experts first and then I also have my own personal opinion. Is there anything wrong with that? In this case, many people adore Hockney and I simply don't find his work relevant.
