The vhs cartridge probably had some tension on the tape. And the vcr wheel head may have needed some cleaning (isopropyl alcohol) if it wasn't already done.
Dave was absolutely the best at being a "Rock Star". He seemed to channel it 24-7 and always had a quote ready for the next interview question. It's like he never ran out of material.
Couldn't agree more, he was all about the show. Ever see anyone else fly 15 feet of the drum riser doing a split? He was Barnum and Baily in spandex. He understood the spectacle was at least have of what made the live show great.
My father told me one time, he said son, you have to remember this , in life it doesn't matter if you win or lose but it's how good you look...." David Lee Roth"
Completely calculated act, brilliantly done. In reality, he’s highly disciplined, very intelligent, accomplished in martial arts and has a background in classical music. He’s anything but the mindless buffoon and athletic klutz he portrays here.
DIAMOND DAVID LEE ROTH....At his Best....FUCK to be able to go back in time and really appreciate my Jr High Days and the Incredible Music of that time .

Jerry Morales, Jerry, that's why it's called LEGENDARY
Doesn't matter how scrambled a picture is. As long as you wind David Lee Roth up, just let him go and you capture gold till his batteries die out, which doesn't happen lol. I hope Martha learned a lot here, cause most other interviews don't go like this. This wasn't a difficult one, but others are far more easier lol. A ton of fun here. Love it.
When you sift between the comedy and self-aggrandizement you find a gem or two - like Dave being honest about stealing musical ideas from other people. Everyone does it - consciously or not, but few admit it and some, like Michael Stipe, ridiculously claim to never have been influenced at all by others.
A lot better than Kingdom Come. A band from Indiana, with a singer from Germany, came up in the second half of the 1980s, sound exactly like Led Zeppelin, claim that they've never heard of Led Zeppelin.
How refreshing to watch an interview where they aren't just kissing the star's ass and laughing hysterically at everything they say. Martha Quinn is awesome.
its called vhs trauma, we are all still suffering effects from the eightys, a#*&)a3u, see that was a spasm. secondhand vhs syndrome effects over 15 million a year..
Born in 1970...I look back and smile, I was a kid in the 70’s, a teen in the 80’s, in my 20’s in the 90’s....what a great time to be alive, anything before 9/11 was great, then the PC ass hats FK’d up all the fun...my motto then was work hard, play hard, and FK hard...lol now I’m 49 with a family, a business, now a respectable person in my area if they could only have seen me in my prime..lol
I've never thought about that! Sean Penn got that role because he showed up to the audition with his ideal Spicoli in mind. As big of a Van Halen and Fast Times fan as I was as a teenager--and I still love both--that connection has never occurred to me. Bravo. Very interesting. I'm gonna have to throw that theory at my old buddy from high school and see what he thinks about it.
"Lot of people have nothing to say in between songs" man I feel this. so many of my favourite bands are like walt disney on stage, it's depressing. I've come to see YOU homie! And don't give me that "it's about the music" crap. Of *course* it's about the music. But if it was only about that I would have stayed home and listened to the album!
"If you take a Van Halen record and stick it in your collection, it'll melt the other records." Where did I hear that before? DLR or Cheech & Chong? I remember that line from somewhere back in the day.
oh that makes sense WHY EACH MEMBER OF VAN HALEN STILL HAS NET WORTH OF 100 MILLION...BC they didnt hire other unneeded staff...THEY DID MOST STUFF THEIR OWN.
This is a one in a million interview, total genius being interviewed. He might be a jerk in private life but he's the ultimate rock-star, the alpha of his kind. So ahead it's embarrassing for the competition. Actually, there's no competition.
I his squeal in Panama man can't do that squeal to save my life 😂♥️ David Lee Roth is and always will be my favorite van Halen singer and I think this Video is haveing a seizure 😂need to call life alert 😂
Good Lord....I realize this would have been VHS back then but damn, I dont remember it jumping around that much. Adjust the tracking, clean the heads and you were good unless the tape got too close to a magnet. Maybe the transfer to get it to this format screwed it up...
The footage would be good if if the visual was better without the picture rolling etc... Dave's philosophy always cracked me up. What a character he is.
Phillip H Anselmo No doubt about it. One of, if not the best front men any rock band ever had. He had "the look" in spades, and his high energy vaudevillian stage antics as well as his keen business sense made VH into the iconic monster that it became more than anything else. Eddie, Alex, and Mikey were each masters of their respective crafts, but they didn't have half the vision and raw "crazy like a fox" genius that Roth had in abundance. Btw, you the real Pantera Anselmo? If so, I'm a big fan homegrown style. I used to go to your shows at Joe's Garage back in the old days before you made the big time. Good times.
"....and that's the integrity of Van Halen, if there's any to be found...." .....God, I love this guy, he has a way of thinking and a sense of humor that is 100 % unique.....lol
Watching this 30+ years later, I'm struck by how much Sean Penn cribbed Roth for his Spiccoli character. The speech patterns and intonation are identical.
David Lee Roth was as important as EVH in Van Halen.... maybe more important. Van Halen got boring and corporate after DLR was kicked out of the band. Seeing DLR entertain on stage was like going to a circus, but with kick ass music that could more than hold its own. Attending Van Halen concerts in the 80s before SH was a real event.
I hope dave Cringes when he looks back at these old videos, while hes counting his millions. He is.WAS the singer of Van Halen , His job,imo was to create cool music & make us feel something ..... once hes sitting ina chair for an interview, hes no longer cool & all that because he just comes across as a bit annoying usually.
