A true battle between the veteran and the young gun as 68 year old David Matlock takes on 28 year old Tyler Styer.
Matlock was known as one of the best players in the game, back in the 80's. He won the 2005 Derby City Classic Banks Event, and had a third place finish in the one pocket division in 2002.
Styer is a two time member of Team USA, and won the 2019 Kremlin Cup. He recently finished second at the 2023 Wisconsin Open.
Mark Wilson and John Schmidt shared their expert insights.

Living legend, David Matlock.

I worked at Side Pockets North in Kansas city Missouri for many years. It was amazing and so much fun when Dave would come in to play. It was an honor meeting him and getting to know him a little and when he offered to give me tips on my stroke I about died. It was also amazing when he played my buddy Jordan in 9 ball on a bar box. Jordan did come out the winner but Dave did give him descent weight but those 2 just threw down such an amazing match to watch.

Thanks for your reply, it verifies what I'd heard, that Dave was from Rolla. I was introduced to the game there, when my family lived there for several years back in the late 50's and early 60's, and when my Dad had a Buick dealership there. Those were some good days. God bless!

@dougoverhoff7568
@dougoverhoff7568 11 месяцев назад
@@davidwilliamson2341 Thank you, again. If Stan's is the poolroom that I remember, then I do believe I was in that room on more than a few occasions, even though I was a youngster at the time, and was likely only there as an interested observer, (since I was infatuated with the game ever since being introduced to it at one of my father's mechanic's home when I was age 10). My memory fades about many details of that room, as it was many moons ago, (I recently turned 75 years old). However, one detail I somehow seem to remember is there was a shoeshine stand by the front window and a cigar cabinet near the front desk, ( no doubt both are long gone). However, I do have one clear remembrance of seeing a very large gentleman hitting a shot with such massive force follow, (though I didn't know it was called that at the time), that it seemed to make the cueball take off like a rocket. I was totally impressed! My family lived in what was known as McFarland Acres, a newer subdivision at the time, off hwy 72, near the edge of town on the way towards Salem. My father's Buick agency was at 4th & Elm Sts., it was 'Vance Motors' when my dad bought it. It's been many years since I've been through that way, so I don't know if the original building is stilll even there. I remember the Dep't of Motor Vehicles was directly across the street, at that time. Anyway....Thanks again for your response, and for prompting my trip down memory lane. Best of luck in your pool shooting, and God bless!

I use to go wherever David played all thru the late 80s and 90s. Shooters in Olathe, biliard palace in Tulsa, Gary Lutmans pool hall, the Cue & Cushion in Houston etc... I never saw him play one hole. Wow. He is the best .
@somefear3510
@somefear3510 Год назад
When I started playing in the early 90s I think he was the house pro out at Shooters in Olathe KS. I am a lefty and was always drawn to watching him because his perspective was "right" like mine :)
@godjhaka7376
@godjhaka7376 Год назад
Lot of people won't understand that. Left handed people are more skilled and talented at everything involving arts... So all the greatest are lefties... Bill Gates, Barack Obama, Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr, Leonardo Da Vinci, you name them. It's as you said, we operate the "Right" way, which is responsible for the creativity, artistic, talent, connection to God. Every right handed person sees the world completely different than us as they work in linear and logic whole we can see the bigger picture and how it all fits together.
@godjhaka7376
@godjhaka7376 Год назад
It's like being right handed you only see what's in front of you in 1 dimension , the first task then you go on to the next. Being left, you can see the entire project in 3 dimensions and how it all interconnects and works.

I saw Matlock make 50 3-cushion billiards in 32 innings, once.. Robbed Rafael Martinez.. Rafael did have a 9 billiard run in the match, though… Still got robbed..

28:59 can’t believe he grabbed that cue ball before it stopped. Wouldn’t have been surprised if a foul had got called on him
@edwardborgias
@edwardborgias Год назад
Well they didn't call a foul when he touched the one ball with his hand so I doubt they're calling that. David's a great player but I don't know how he didn't realize he touched that with his hand and call a foul on himself. Tyler wasn't concerned and maybe he said he did and Tyler said leave it. I am curious though. Give him the benefit of the doubt I guess.
@51Dss
@51Dss Год назад
@@edwardborgias I don't believe they were playing "foul on all balls" - Dave did realize he had moved the ball with his hand because he looked down at it right after it happened. The referee was merely asking Styer if he wanted the ball moved back to its original spot or if he wanted to leave there. Styer elected to leave it there. Dave did the right thing by staying back and waiting for the referee to step in. A player may not move a ball with his hand in any circumstance because to do so would be a foul and in 1 pocket it would cost 1 ball...in 9 ball the opposing player would get ball in hand and in straight pool the offending player would be docked 1 point off of his total match score.

@godjhaka7376 Год назад
If all players and pool halls embraced Taom V10, the tables and players would stay so much cleaner. But most complain about costs. I understand what it's like to be on poverty and have to live worrying about the price of things rather than the experience and benefits.
