David Munrow and colleagues play the Dijeridoo in a short clip from the BBC2 TV 5-part series 'Ancestral Voices', shown in 1976, shortly before Munrow took his own life.
Munrow makes a case for the missing link between folk music and pre-classical music. This is from the Horns episode.
In it, Munrow propounded the theory that early music must have had the passion and vibrancy of folk music, played today by indigenous peoples. It was recorded at a time Munrow was manically overworked and the strain sometimes shows.
This video is from a researcher's copy and is not to be copied or redistributed.

I think it was wonderfully fascinating and skillful how David Munrow played the digeridoo. I feel like this is not being appreciated enough.

Actually in this video, David Munrow does not really play the dijeridoo, he vocalizes through it. The only actual 'playing' is by Alan Lumsden to David's left.

I Love David Munrow playing most instruments but not the didgeridoo, watching him and his fellow non didgeridoo (Yidaki) players does now in anyway show the ancient instrument in any positive light. Please look at any other didge video and then you will see how the instrument should be played. Sorry David.

Interesting window on how little people in the UK knew about the instrument back then, though.

how appalling... such cultural arrogance... a couple of half truths in there like the overblown harmonic of the east Arnhem land style being referenced but the squawking cacophony at the end has zero resemblance to the pure style of the amazingly sophisticated culture that it mocks. This video, with its self congratulatory inbuilt western racial superiority should be removed, or replaced with something of genuine cultural worth from this most ancient and powerful of cultures 🖐

I agree Steve. What he says betrays his ignorance on the matter. As you say, the sophisticated songs and sounds and techniques required to play such an instrument, as players across the North of Australia do, require great skill and deep cultural knowledge. Like traditional music everywhere, it's complex, there are thousands upon thousands of songs and styles. Saddened to hear that he died not long after this aired.

Yeah, this for instance is a much better omage to digeridoo, Robert Culbertson. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rnwiXrx-nZE.html&ab_channel=RobertCulbertson

laughing at aboriginal culture.... wow I'm glad times have changed.

Are you sure they didn't laugh at the look of Munrow? (he DOES look hilarious). These people voluntarily attended a concert series meant to educate common people about the traditional musical culture of all kinds of diverse peoples (and Munrow MEANT it just like that, he was genuinely interested), back in a time when that was BY FAR not the norm (Australia abolished the last laws that specifically discriminated aboriginal people one year before that recording). I find it rather sad if these people, whom I'd judge rather culturally open minded for their time, get scorned at for laughing at the sight of a supposedly stiff englishman in a suit, performing a stile of folk music that must have been utterly unknown and alien to them back in 1976.

@@b.g.9257 You know what, you're totally right I don't know the context at why they might be laughing. on inflection and as you so eloquently put it a "stiff Englishman in a suit, performing..." might elicit a chuckle out of me if I saw it first hand.

Oh, you're welcome :-D I am totally pro equality and con discrimination, but I rather feel that we (including me, I'm admittedly full to the brim with all kinds of harmful stereotypes from when I grew up - but I am improving) still need some more finetuning on our reflexes about what is discriminating and what's not :-)

@@danielthompson6207 , according this from Wikipedia "In 1976, Munrow hanged himself while in a state of depression", he did not "actually shot himself"......unless perhaps he did both, more or less at once......
