The pianist on this recording, David Hancock, was a highly respected recording engineer. When he was in charge of recording the NY Philharmonic he was responsible for the preservation of Horowitz’s 1953 performance of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto with George Szell. It was supposed to be destroyed after the concert but David (who told me this story himself) could not bear to sacrifice such a great performance, leading to its release on the ‘pirate’ LP label Penzance Records.
I had the great pleasure of performing the Mozart Divertimento K. 563 with David Nadien and Emanuel Vardi in (of all places) Rapid City, S. Dakota during a music festival, of which Manny Vardi was the music director.
