thank you David!! this is sooo helpful. I've got a new Annabelle I'll prune in spring. Does this advice also go for native US smooth hydrangeas?(the same species)
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 9 месяцев назад
Absolutely, any of the hydrangeas (or other shrub varieties too) that flower on the current year's growth. If you are ever in doubt as to whether any of your shrubs flower on the current year's growth or the growth made the previous year, just hold back and let them flower and then examine the stems closely. You will see with H. arborescens (Smooth Hydrangea) types they make lots of growth in the spring and early summer and flower later on the tops of these shoots. So cutting them back hard annually, promotes lots of great growth and all these highly impressive blooms. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about subscribing, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), it will turn up automatically in your feed. And, as you find our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that helps other people find the information as well. Finally, now that the cooler weather of Fall arrives, it brings with it the BEST TIME of PLANTING and since our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ are continuing to bring in stocks of gorgeous plants, if you live in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region be sure to stop in and take a look…. Because that’s where you will discover all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections.

Watching from UK love your program on Hydrangea any idea if the big white Hydrangea is sold any where in UK or on Amazon. Love your teaching .

Thank you, it is nice to know that our efforts are proving helpful on the "other side of the pond" as well as here in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeast region: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ I looked up the RHS Plant Finder and see that the "big white one" is available in the UK. So ask at your local garden center and they may be able to fix you up! I think the name that it goes under is "Strong Annabelle".

Now I am more confused about how to prune my old Endless Summer variety hydrangeas🤦‍♀️. They bloom so well each summer, and I leave last year’s thick longer branches which seem to come thru the winter with large buds on the tips of these branches. There are many new green branches coming from the base. I only remove any dead wood from each plant at the end of March (zone5 b). They were topped with fresh compost and slow release fertilizer as well. Each shrub has both blue and some pink blooms….guess our soil is becoming more neutral ph from the once more acid clay soil we used to garden in. I add compost and manure each Spring, and hardwood mulch. Pruning videos would be super helpful in early March, before errors occur. Thanks for all of your advice👍👍
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 2 года назад
Don't be confused, and keep doing what you are doing! This is a completely different sort. And unlike your mophead or big leafed Endless Summer type these ones benefit from a hard prune in early spring! Your Endless Summer is best left unpruned.

I'm a bit confused. Do the Annabelles produce flowers from the new growth emerging from the soil or the stems you pruned back to 1/3 of the plant that emerged last year?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Год назад
Thanks for your question, David says he apologizes for not explaining it better! ☹️ Essentially you can do it either way, they will flower on all the new growth (i.e. new shoots emerging from the ground and new shoots sprouting from the base of existing stems)! In fact, if you wish, you can trim the whole clump back to a few inches from ground level. The idea is to stimulate plenty of fresh new growth because that's what will grow out and produce the flowers later on. We hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching, if you haven't already, can we suggest that you think about subscribing to our channel, we are posting new videos all the time, and once you are subscribed they will automatically be included in your feed. Hi David, my Annabel Hydrenga which I hav planned last spring produced two big flowers. Recently though I see that it stopped growing and its leaves began to yellow and have some brown crisps ends on some of them. We had very hot summer here in UK and I was watering my plants every day or every other day. I’ve put some fertilizer to . Have I watered it to much or to little? The soil is rather clay type . Many thanks Dorota from London UK
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Год назад
It is not unusual to see some browning or spots on the leaves of Annabelle, the big leaves are prone to wind exposure damage, especially if it is out in an open position, and there maybe some minor fungal infection going on too. Usually, even though it is a bit unsightly, it doesn't affect the health and well being of the plants much. They are pretty adaptable and grow quite well in a variety of soil types (including clay soils). But because clay soils are very finely textured and do not drain well, you are right to be concerned about watering too much. I would suggest you water only when the soil is in danger of drying out, so water more by need (when the soil dries out), rather than by a set calender frequency.

Specifically, what do you consider "early spring"?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Год назад
David says, early spring is that tricky period when winter is transitioning into spring. The time when plants are just beginning to "stir" - they sense that spring is coming, and they are just starting to come out of winter dormancy, This is the period when we might get nice, open sunny days when its chilly but still good to be outside but at the same time, these days will be followed by cold, wintery feeling days when the plants (and us) know that winter has not yet passed. Hope this helps explain. BTW, have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about subscribing, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), it will turn up automatically in your feed. Yes, I subscribed and will watch out for your video’s. Between living in Arkansas (zone 7b/tornado alley) and climate change, it is getting more and more difficult to figure out when early spring is! Our last frost is typically beginning of April but we start getting warm afternoons in Feb/March. The last 3 years specifically, we have had late snows and early warm days. So I will have to just wing it! The hank you for getting back to me! I wish I lived near your garden centers!
