Great video! May I ask you? If a regular Limelight hydrangea bush grows 8' or more, what is going to be with a Limelight tree when it matures, 8' branches or 8' total? And how this trunk is going to hold so massive canopy? I saw a video that branches of 3 years old tree brake from wind and barely hold heavy panicles after rains. Or this kind of pruning will prevent form growing long branches?.. Thank you.

Beautiful tree! Planning to plant it in my garden. How much hours of minimum sunlight does it require to have best results or just a full day of dappled shade under another tree is good for it?? (I live in Nepal with summer temperature 22-32°C)

Thanks for watching and posting your question. Geums are spring and early summer flowering perennials, and while they might occasionally throw a flower spike or so in the cooler weather of autumn, we cannot depend on them to flower anything like the way they do in the early part of the year. As you mention, they do produce nice clumps of semi-glossy green, textured leaves, so even if flowers are absent, the rounded clumps will be nice to look at. When you were watching David's video, did you pick up on his suggestion to divide your clumps regularly? This can be done either in autumn or spring, and goes a long way in helping to keep your plants vigorous and flowering well. We don't have a specific video on dividing Geums on our channel, but if you watch this one on Heucheras: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9NLlarfmsxM.htmlsi=ZLl7AaIbNgoBfJrE it will show you the principle methods of how to do it, is very similar. We hope this helps. Finally, have you subscribed to our channel yet? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. And, as you find our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that will help other people find out about the information as well. And, now that we are in the midst of the main planting season (spring through late Fall) we try to encourage everyone to visit our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/. They are located all over our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, and that's where you will find all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections, so be sure to stop in regularly throughout the seasons because there will be a steady stream of fresh shipments coming in weekly.

Thanks for watching and posting your question. As you may have noticed in some of our other videos (here on this channel): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q_EyG3pwzTY.htmlsi=EqJttLFlZYC4NGIx we specialize in shipping nice, big, well-shaped (instant effect) specimens to our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/, and we are pleased to tell you, that just one plant is all that you would need for this space. You could put in 3 plants, and that would give you an impressive display initially, but in a few years they would be competing with each other and that would be a shame. Better (in our opinion) would be to take the longer term approach by using your money on improving the planting spot and making sure you get the best quality plant possible, and then allowing it to grow unimpeded and show off all of its wonderful beauty for many years into the future. One extra thought would be to put your plant in the center of the bed and then compliment the planting with some smaller growing perennials, bulbs or annuals These could be positioned around the outer edge. This would help to give you a more instant effect at the start, and at the same time extend the color duration period and provide a lovely base to display this variety's habit and soft pink flowers. The plant experts at our centers may be able to help you with suggestions, or alternatively when you visit, take one of our flowering specimens and compare it next to other potential purchases, and then you will be able to select the combination(s) that appeals to your personal taste. David says likes to use silver foliage with pink roses, for example he likes to use Lavenders: grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sfm_genus=Lavandula, and he also likes to use deep blue or purple Salvias: grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sfm_genus=Salvia and he especially loves to allow blue or purple Clematis: grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sf_s=Blue&_sfm_genus=Clematis to scramble up through and over pink roses too. There's really a lot of creative and very beautiful things you can do with this space! Our other videos (also on this channel), and the above links to our website will help you in your research. We hope this helps. Finally, have you subscribed to our channel yet? @OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 3 дня назад
Thanks for watching and posting your question. It is natural for the fading flowers as they age, to start turning shades of beige, and eventually light brown. Especially, as the summer temperatures rise and the soil becomes drier. Mulching the ground and watering at the base of the plant will help to keep the flowers looking fresher, longer. But essentially, the plant is probably doing what it is supposed to be doing! In most situations home owners opt to leave the flowers on the plants because at least they provide some interest into the autumn and winter. But if you prefer, they can be removed by snipping off the tops and that helps to tidy up the plants. If you've been watching any of David's other videos (also on the channel) you may have heard him talk about the importance of planting a selection of things that will keep interest going right through the whole gardening year. And with that in mind, can we suggest that you make periodic visits to some of our partnering garden centers: because that's where you will be able to see a revolving selection that will help you keeps color and interest going year round. We hope this helps. Finally, have you subscribed to our channel? @OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 4 дня назад
Thanks for watching and posting your question. Most of the roses in our David Austin trial area (including Eustacia Vye) are now in their fourth growing season. As as you've perhaps picked up, we have 4 areas with the same varieties replicated in each bed. Two areas are sprayed with a systemic fungicide (twice in the early part of the growing season) and two are left unsprayed, and pretty much left to their own devices! The idea is to determine which varieties perform best in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern USA region, and which ones will put on a good show in average home garden conditions even if they are not sprayed, irrigated or molly cuddled in nay way. The ones that David is (and will be), featuring here on our channel are the ones that have performed best in this trial. We hope this helps. Have you subscribed to our channel yet? How do I choose between Ruby Snow and Love a Lot Pink?

Thanks for watching. Probably the best thing would be to visit some of our partnering garden centers: and look at the plants in reality (side by side), and make your selection. Or better still (if you have the space), plant and enjoy both of them! Alternatively, you could try rewatching our videos (on this channel) and then make your selection based on your preferences. Also, here's a link to our website: grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sf_s=Hydrangea&_sft_plant_cat=worryfree-plants that will help you research more details about each of them. Love a lot will be a bit bigger growing (5' or so) and have bigger (almost gigantic) flowers, Ruby Snow will be more compact, and have slightly smaller flowers but more of them, and it will be bushier and more wider and rounded in habit too. We hope this helps.

Good to hear our video was helpful. If you do it next year, be sure to let us all know how it turns out! As you've probably noted, this will encourage strong upward growth, so while your plant will still probably get just as tall (or maybe even more so), the habit will probably be narrower, so the plant maybe better suited to your site. Alternatively you could take leaf out of our book, and give your plant a second and perhaps even a third trim! We do this all the time in the nursery...., that's why when you visit our partnering garden centers: you will see all our compact, bushy, evenly shaped plants! It means a bit more work, and for us added (labor) expense, but the results (we believe) is worth it. So, either way, we hope you are able to enjoy the beautiful, long lasting foliage on this lovely easy to grow shrub. Have you subscribed to our channel? @OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 6 дней назад
Thanks for watching and your kind comment, it is appreciated. When pruning them, the sooner after they finish flowering the better! That leaves the longest time for them to grow back out and produce the flower buds for next year. Pruning them in summer, means that they might miss a year's flowering or whatever flowering appears, could be thin and light. So, since its already getting on for late summer, our suggestion would be for you to leave them until they flower next year, or alternatively, just lightly trim them (if they are untidy or getting in the way, or something). Then you can implement David's suggestions as they finish flowering next year, and then you can look forward to bushier, more shapely and heavier flowering plants in future years. We hope this helps. @OverdevestNurseries 8 дней назад
Thanks for watching and for your question. We wonder if you are cutting it back to the ground every spring or if you are in a cold zone where the over-wintering canes are getting killed back to the ground. You see, the flower buds and fruit is produced on the growth that was made the previous year. So, its important to retain at least some of that growth, because that's where the fruiting buds will sprout from. In our nursery and garden centers (here in Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern USA States): grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ we give our plants a light trim in early spring to make the plants nice and full and bushy and then later in summer we see the flower buds and eventually plenty fruit. @@OverdevestNurseries thanks for the response! I'm in Southern CA LA county 10b. It only grows about less than a foot, then the leaves crisp up and all fall off leaving behind the bare shoots. Following year, new growth and shoots, same thing happens with the leaves. I have it in a 20 in pot, it gets morning sun and afternoon shade, regular feedings, and enough water. This year I moved it to mostly shade and it grew new shoots like crazy, but still only less than a foot tall and no flowers and didn't crisp up at all. I bought baby cakes blackberries at the same time and those have given an abundance of fruit! Idk why these raspberries are so stubborn. Thank you for noticing. It is pretty dramatic and well worth doing if you like this type of luxuriant growth. And it's important to mention that earlier in the year, as the new growth was developing, the color of the leaves was much deeper and darker and even more impressive than David is showing now in late summer too. Then as Autumn draws in the same lush looking foliage will often turn to beautiful shades of yellow, orange and purplish reds too. It depends on the weather, seasonal growing conditions etc. but this can be truly spectacular as well, to make this even more amazing. Have you subscribed to our channel yet? It sounds like your plant may be struggling a bit after transplanting. This is always a critical period with a plant trying to adjust to its new home. Which is why we put a lot of effort into growing our trees (in a special way) in containers to form a mass of finely textured root system. This link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SNu2CI10oF0.html to one of our other videos on planting a container grown tree will explain in more detail. If you know any knowledgeable master gardeners, garden coaches or even someone from your local Extension Service you may want to have them take a look. They will be able to determine if the soil drainage looks OK, if the top part is still alive and likely to re-flush and grow out again, or if it is dead, and the plant needs to be pruned and reshaped to allow it to form a new leader etc. Meanwhile, give it plenty to TLC, water it regularly (especially during any dry spells) and mulch the planting spot too, if you haven't already done that. Then if you rewatch our video, you will hear David explain (around the 8.30 minute mark) how trees like this often take a few years to settle in and get established, and in this case, our tree was in its third year after transplanting. So, often its a matter of adjusting to the new site, establishing a root system that reaches out into the surrounding soil and beyond. And then, that's when you will start to see the sort of gorgeous response that our trees are showing in the video. We hope this helps.

Does it bear fruit when near a native red elderberry?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 10 дней назад
It is descended from the native red elderberry. Which is (partly) why it does so well in our region. And yes, maturing plants will produce the same type of red berries which birds and small animals will feed on. But, unlike the black berries on Sambucus nigra, these berries are to be avoided by humans. Further more, it produces its flowers and fruit on older branches, so if you prune it annually (as we advocate and like to do), you will get a fabulous foliar display that is stunning, as well as being more compact and bushy. For big leaf hydrangeas , do you have to deadhead for new blooms ?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 10 дней назад
Thanks for watching, nice to hear from you again. You don't have to dead head them, but it helps to keep them fresher and nicer looking (especially the reblooming ones that David is talking about). So if you have the time and the inclination, snipping off the old flowers as they discolor. will help to keep the display looking better. We hope this helps.

I have a Winecraft Smokebush that has outgrown its spot…..can it be dug up & moved, if so when in the season is best.?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 9 дней назад
Yes, they usually move and transplant well. The best times are either in cool moist conditions of Autumn and early spring. It is important thing is to dig a good sized rootball around the plant and then prepare a generous sized hole and transplant it in a similar manner to the process David describes in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SNu2CI10oF0.htmlsi=wPDafMzNkd95cEPY where he is planting a container grown tree. Beautiful result from the pruning. I just did same to an old lilac bush that was neglected and I,properly pruned by previous owners. Fingers crossed. Deer here in southwest Nova Scotia are voracious eaters, food scarcity and overpopulation of deers make them eat everything except daffodils and ornamental grasses. Nothing is safe from,deers here. The deers actually are breaking down the fenced off areas around gardens and trees to protect them from the deers. Daily battle😢

Glad you brought up the lack of blooms due to heavy pruning, personally I enjoy the Smoke Tree trained to be a tree vs a shrub with its unique smoke like blooms, but only if you have room in your garden, guessing a good 20 ft canopy required in the long run.

Thanks for watching and chipping in with your comment. That's one of the nice things about knowing how it behaves.... Cut it back hard, and you will get lots of colorful, upright growing, luxuriant growth (but no flowers).
