Moral of the book: stop watching Fox news and you will become a better person.

Actually, just don't watch the news period. Americans in general are always so stressed and can have shitty mentalities bc of whatever political beliefs they have. Politics are bad for your soul.

@@BigLar56321 I think you have the best take. You can't just not be exposed to news period but you can't wallow in it either. News in general is pretty much bad news. Awful news. But it is information and factual information is beneficial. It helps you understand what is going on. What has happened. Those Fox News viewers aren't even watching the January 6th hearings at all because they don't want to know about all the crimes committed by Trump and his helpers. All the things they did that were illegal. They are deliberately keeping themselves ignorant and not even blissfully so. They want to believe Trump made everything better. They want to believe that he can save America. But they are adults not kids and when adults create a fantasy world to escape reality all they do is give acceptance to those who do great harm.
@BigLar56321

@@wpl8275 Well put. In my view, those who still support Trump and his big lie at this point are either ignorant or willfully ignorant. The former can at least theoretically have their eyes opened and views changed by being educated with the truth. The latter are irredeemable and should be marginalized until they disappear in the ordinary course of things. If they become a majority or even a ruling minority we are all placed at great risk of losing our republic.

March 3rd of last year, my twin sister passed a few weeks before our 30th birthday. It has been the absolute worst ever since. We both grew up reading David Sedaris since we were 14, ‘me talk pretty one day’ was what got us started. We had read all of his books. I pre-ordered the newest one, haven’t started it yet. The one cherished item of my sisters, the single most cherished item I have of hers, is from when she went to one of his book signings. he did an amazing signing with a sticker incorporated very cleverly, and really sweet personalized autograph/note. I keep it on my nightstand, at the moment next to a couple others of his.

As I wrote above, the elder Mr. Sedaris, proves my theory that in dementia the unused part of the brain kicks in. My father, who could be a tyrant, and who was an alcoholic, became a sweet, gentle man in his years of Alzheimer's. He forgot he was an alcoholic and he made a face when mom gave him some wine. On the other hand, his roommate, a beloved Lutheran pastor (this was MN) began to swear, he grabbed the nurses' privates, and he yelled all day long. Someone please fund me to do the research!

David is a truly gifted man, my appreciation for the laughter he has given me is immeasurable. Now, I find we have something more in common (not just gay guys in 30+ year relationships who have delightful sisters), we both had parents with dementia. Our Mother was problematic, volatile, sometimes unhinged, and in any conflict she would try her best to destroy you as a person. She was never honest with us about anything in her life. Finally, after decades of washing down her tranquilizers with copious amounts of scotch, she was diagnosed with dementia. My Sister tried to have her live with her, she is incredibly patient. But assisted living was the best choice for both of them. Once the dementia was advanced, we began to enjoy a relationship with a sweet, appreciative, kind lady. The soul-destroying harpy was no more. What a gift for us to enjoy at the end of her life! (She was never prescribed tranquilizers, she just liked them and her pharmacist provided them. He went to Federal Prison for it.)

As a schizophrenic person who’s relatively young, and also as a sibling, I’d say give him another chance. For us, things that seem so important in the moment are completely forgotten the next year or week or even day, and arguments don’t hold real substance because nothing holds real substance, it’s all someone else’s narrative. Break the ice slowly, especially if you haven’t spoken in a few years. If he’s on social media, maybe like one of his posts, say something positive about it. Be delicate but never patronizing. You’re not talking to the person you fought with that family gathering. Existence is chimerical, ever-changing for people like us. We reinvent against our will. Approach the situation like you’re meeting him for the first time and see what you have in common. Start small and good things will happen.

I read his books to my mother one summer when she was recovering from a bad fall, and we both laughed till we cried, and laughed till she " snerked, & then we'd laugh some more.... and my mother's laugh is one of my favorite sounds so that summer was awesome for us both. Thanks to David Sedaris 🤗💜

I have always imagined him as the (?)twenty-something who narrates annually on NPR for christmas his "santa's elf" piece. Have read his books. Imagine my surprise to see he has aged (as have we all). Still has that young and eminently likeable voice.

I can really relate to his teeth issues. I live in poverty, like so many in America, & my teeth are wrecked & of course I can't afford to fix them. Wearing masks was a great break from that.

If you truly live in poverty, you should be able to get super-low-cost health care through the Affordable Care Act, including at least some dental care.

My parents just had our teeth removed rather than have cavities filled. They never taught us about dental hygiene. We were poor, but they always prioritized cigarettes and beer over any other need. I really take care of my remaining teeth, my hygienist is always amazed by my lack of tartar.

My first David Sedaris book was "Me Talk Pretty One Day". I was hooked and read everything before and after. One of my favorite moments was when his father had some sort of infection and was taking antibiotics prescribed for the dog, figuring it was all the same. He told this to one of his daughters and she told him he shouldn't do that, not because it might be unhealthy, but because how's the dog going to get better if he takes all his medicine.

I can and have re read his books over and over again and when dealing with hard times I can open one and always find something so interesting, clever and funny it makes everything alright in my world. What a gift he has and Amy as well. We are lucky to have people in this world like them.

It’s classic reverse snobbery and usually a sign of a mediocre American cishet male who won’t wear anything that isn’t ill-fitting and earth-toned lest someone think he’s gay.

@Not Meg Griffin We need all types of satirists during these difficult times. I would check out David Sedaris. I saw him in person once and laugh so hard I cried. He is also has had great observations about Trump and undecided voters, religion etc. As they say: don't judge a book by its cover.

omg... thank you colbert! Back story.... I was horribly abused. My adoptive mother was always hounding me to smile on command and when i did, it looked dumb and the abuse would get worse while never being able allowed to show any expression at all when she was abusing me. I learned B*tch Face way to young for the worse reasons. I am been like your friend here, practicing how to smile so i dont look fake or force. or stupid. I am trying to break out of my ptsd issues. and i get so tired of hearing people say "smile" and i think i am... and all i do is look scared. i didnt work this hard in over coming so much to still look like a deer in the head lights. Thank you thank you for that tip
