my sister asked Sedaris to sign one of his books to a friend of hers who is a huge fan. Sedaris asked if her friend was gay, to which she emphatically answered no. Sedaris grinned and signed the book. It read: dear so-and-so, everyone thinks you're gay. David Sedaris

The podcast S-Town centers around a person who, in his first email to the person who created the podcast, attempted to signal his sexuality by saying, "Let's just say I might be a fan of David Sedaris." So apparently that's a thing!

Me Talk Pretty One Day really helped my anxiety with coping in a foreign country and trying to learn the language as an adult: "Things began to come together, and I went from speaking like an evil baby to speaking like a hillbilly. "Is thems the thoughts of cows?" I'd ask the butcher, pointing to the calves' brains displayed in the front window. "I want me some lamb chop with handles on 'em.”

Calves brains? 😳 ....omg! Humans are so evil. An invasive species, killing our "roommates" or "co-habitators" against their will, chopping them up, and selling the parts. Barbaric, and cruel 🤢 If we went to the butcher, and there was a golden retriever puppy brain for sale....we would all be outraged. Meat is for emergencies only. Literally when there's nothing else to eat ONLY. There's literally nothing in meat we need to be healthy.

Thank you, David, for all you do. But also, for pointing out that luck and who one knows has a lot to do with "success" or having made "it". Talent, is key, and hard work, too. But many people who are talented, and who work their bums off don't make it big. It is lovely how humble he is. I love his work so much.

Nathan Grant It's so true, we moan, but unlike in "The greatest country on earth", we all have the right to clean drinking water, and nobody's first reaction when they are given a terrible medical diagnosis is: "I can't afford this, I'm going to lose my house, and my family will lose everything". Our parents are allowed time off work during the most formative period of our lives. We are incredibly lucky. We even get decent weather occasionally. lol. :-)

This interview has really stuck with me, the words when it comes to after reading the book just keep coming back to me ringing true in other parts of life. "you get to put the book down and be yourself, i had to read the book and then still be the person in the book". It's crazy accurate and the perfect wording to describe sharing anything personal with anyone else (thoughts, emotions, work, story) where people aren't often emotionally aware of their own knowledge that they acted how they did. then sedaris asks the ringing question, "Do you think you've changed a lot? I mean maybe your circumstances have but fundamentally, do you think you've changed in 30 years?" and I think about that a lot, and how my fundamentals have never really changed, and most people are probably driven by similar or the same fundamentals but our circumstances merely change. Anyways, Sedaris is amazing!

So I love both of these men but I appreciate David acknowledging that there is some luck that goes into becoming famous and successful. Even liberal celebrities like Stephen support the myth of meritocracy (look how hard he veered when David brought up luck). Of course David and Stephen both work hard, but there are a ton of folks that work just as hard if not harder that *don't* make it where they are. Being in the right place at the right time, connections, family support, etc. are all extremely helpful advantages. David's humility here is really admirable.
