What Seymour is saying is just right. We shouldn’t put people in different baskets and decide people is which basket will get priority. Just treat everyone as an individual of equal value. I am definitely voting for Seymour next term.
@@89hattersa poor depraved non Maori has the same life expectancy as a Maori in the same state of health. Otherwise the shorter lifespan would be down to genetics, which no-one claims to be the case. Statistics based on race ignore the many relevant factors such as housing, access to health services or lifestyle choices. Those need to be tackled based on the individuals' circumstances, regardless of what ethnicity some distant ancestors may have had.
@@ngataringa1742 you didn't address why wealthier Maori also have a shorter life expectancy. If as statistics show Maori have a lesser lifespan that would suggest they are most impacted by poor housing, poverty and lifestyle choices , even poor pakeha fair better. So if as a whole Maori are more disadvantaged why would you advocate for an individualistic approach and not target those most effected?
@@89hatterssome of it is just genetic luck. chinese live longer than pakeha. women live longer than men. Very tall people die younger etc etc. should we start tilting the scales for tall people?
Yeh ,like Trump has support Seymour,Brash,Prebble and their Act cronies are not new to NZ. The crown tried to subjugate Maori with troops ,then with a pen ,post 1840 ,,,this is history . Settlements concerning govt. transgessions are almost completed .. Until all Iwi are apologized to ,tiriti is not ratified .
As an immigrant applying for work, I was shocked to be asked on a CV application what my etnicity is. Why? Now I am a citizen. Why still asking? What would be the difference of my skills in this case? And... a letter from the hospital had on the envelope: my name, address and my etnicity. Huh? Why? How did we get here?
@@ngataringa1742 most good government jobs or RND jobs or contracting companies in nz have that expectation for national security that it’s born citizens
Impeccable logic. Ethnicity does not automatically define a specific health need. The Treaty Principles Bill may not reach a 2nd reading, however at least it will get a public airing with citizens (at last!) being able to put forward their views.
Why are the 20 people in Waitangi Treaty tribunal allowed to interpret the Treaty the way they want to??? Bring everyone to the table the Treaty needs an update. It's regularly interpreted in many different ways. It's an historical document and historical documents are usually updated around the world.
It's not interpreted in many different ways, forked tounged maybe by the colinisers who have a long history of treachery and betrayal not only amongst themselves but all across the world! Youse just make up the rules as you go that's called dictatorship of a foreign run system. History doesn't lie. Only those who try to rewrite history for their own selfish gain will lie and sabotage and do anything to gain control, which is also a trait of European history.
It's not interpreted many ways, most likely only forked tounged by the colonizers who have a long history of treachery and backstabbing, not only amongst themselves but all across the world. It's called a dictatorship and control from a foreign system. It's always been in their job to drown out and exploit tangatawhenua. History doesn't lie. Only those who try to rewrite history for their own self gain, lie, and sabotage, which is inbedded in European culture and history
What right does Seymour have to change the text in the Treaty. The changes he wants to make ignores the fact Maori are the indigenous of NZ. He's misleading the public on this issue.
@@waynewright5571 because it's being created by the tribunal in recent times and it will destroy NZ. The Treaty needs an update because it can be interpreted in many different ways.
He's got the right idea. It's a pity the opposition can't get past their biases. I'm certain that given time, these (mainly journalists) will run out of arguments. Truth will prevail.
A long time ago when I was at Auckland University, it was said that on average, New Zealand students paid 25% of their university education. The taxpayer picked up 75%. I wonder how it averages out now.
I agree with his healthcare stance. Prioritizing health and resource metrics over ethnicity more effectively identifies those in need. Even without race as a criterion, Māori will still be overrepresented in priority, though likely slightly less, as some higher-need individuals from other groups will also occupy slots.
@@reganmaconaghie2612 pushing a false interpretation of the treaty in order to get justice is not the way forward. We are one human race, we are one family, and we need to work together for the betterment of each other.
@@ReyWho we wouldn’t be able to move forward until the past settled like if I owed you 2000 dollars would you want to move forward and forget that debt and not hold it against me or would want that debt to settled and then move forward like how 1.6 Million hectors(48000000 nzd by avg cost of hector from the reinz ) of land where “taken” in 1863 settlements act at the time Māori representation in parliament or in the government and that of taken land was taken in suspect ways soon until that and until that debt is settled, there’s always gonna be a disparity as something was stolen it’s not good enough to apologise and recognise it has to be made whole.
The media had no repsonses other than 'but muh outcomes' It really shows how little theyve actually looked into this particular subject and bothered to inform themselves of any other ideas independent of their same ole repetitive talking points Great work, David
Of all the issues Seymour stated why are they being attributed to the treaty of Waitangi a declaration of 1840? They are relevant issues in our current social climate that any decent government could address regardless of what is meant by the treaty of Waitangi.
And yet research shows one race dies earlier than another, why would that be? Poor housing, poverty, access to Healthcare are factors but wealthy Maori also die before pakeha.
@@89hatters correlation is not causation. Without multi variate analysis we simply do not know. And any attempt to say it’s race is misguided at best. For example: A higher rate of smoking could completely explain a life expectancy difference, rich or poor. For it to be race related it would need to be genetic.
@@ObiePaddles nope, most Maori will have an element of European blood and as racists like to say there are no purebred Maori left. So the gene pool has mixed. So what factors are different? That will be the higher rates of poverty, poor housing, lifestyle choices, lack of access to Healthcare, poor education. These are all elements of generational racism. Genetics is a reasonable new science, racism isn't.
@@89hatters In agree the issues you have highlighted are the probable causes. If you argue that lifestyle choices are generational racism that’s just BS. My family (with no Maori blood) had incredible poverty, useless housing, and poor lifestyle choices by elders (smoking, exercise and diet). But we tool advantage of available education and changed that in 1 generation. I believe anyone, regardless of ethnicity can improve their lives and know may Maori who have done so.
So. If willie Jackson, had a child aged 15,and went the doctor for free while he is on $400k a year. But an Asian child whose parents have an annual INCOME of $75k have to pay. BIG FUKEN QUESTION MARK
Maori lost their land over a century & a half ago. Now they have to potentially fight again. For treaty interpretation from a blow in political party. When will the dismantling of Maori sovereignty & integrity cease? After resources & fishery rights are sold out to China? It was Maori land first. & it will always be Maori land. I look forward to the introduction of said bill for reading. Being voted down.
@@catharinabellekom2013 Not moaning. Just stating facts and there’s always one troll prepared to put their mouth in. Mind your own business.& state your own case via your own post. Instead of playing “provocateur”. Look it up.
@@fieldsofgold775 pushing a false interpretation of the treaty in order to get justice is not the way forward. We are one human race, we are one family, and we need to work together for the betterment of each other.
@catharinabellekom2013 Maori lost a lot of land to treaty breaches by past governments. When it comes to land we would rather have it protected for all people in NZ instead of being sold off to the highest bidder. Just remember the more wealthy people get away with purchasing the harder it becomes for all middle and working class NZers to purchase land. The race debate is just bait to take your attention away from oligarchs ramming it up our collective asses.
The Treaty Bill should be a corpus of the contracts that were formed after long negotiation periods. I don’t think New Zealand should or could word dance its way out of honoring them. Māori have already gotten the raw end of the deal. It should be unified into a single act with congruent legal terminology, but I don't think you can cancel all those agreements. Almost nobody signed the English version of the treaty. Those agreements found a negotiated middle ground to keep everything functioning. It would be the largest civil unrest in NZ history. Mass broken windows in commercial areas, stacks of burning tyres, looting, whole city centres shutdown, it wouldn't be a pretty sight.
Sick a tired of hearing about the bs Maori hand outs. What people need to understand is a large majority of Iwi already had their own funding in place. My tipuna used the land he had, and acquired as much land as he could by purchasing back land that was taken in our area. Generations later that land has developed to income, jobs and grants for his iwi. The grants I received were education based from the iwi not government. No hand outs were given to my tipuna to purchase and develop that land. The only hand outs I know of are entitled to all citizens of NZ regardless of race.
Someone please answer these questions. Was the treaty of Waitangi signed between the Crown and Maori to form a new nation together? Is it really a founding document of a nation, New Zealand, just like the declaration of independence of the US?
Maori requested the Queen of England govern her own people within NZ. The document gaurentees Maori chiefs continued governance of thier land and people. 500 chiefs signed in Te Reo Maori.
@@djhemirukahemisphere8893 Yes, that’s my understanding as well, thank you. So that is not an agreement to form a nation together. The treaty is an agreement as to how the two different people get along together in this land. So when and how did New Zealand become one nation with Maori and British together as citizens? Was the treaty of Waitangi upheld as the national founding document at that time?
Where have you been David all those statistics have been done and are always monitored and have lead to more resources and funding required for Māori and Pacific peoples. Kiwis know this David why don’t you? Pandering to your voters perhaps?
I don't think you understand what he's saying. He said that resources should be allocated according to criteria that are truly causative, such as living conditions, income, place if living etc etc. Maori may still be highly represented in these factors, but their race is not THE cause of it
The foundation of your so called bill did not follow proper democratic process its based on your SUBJECTIVE opinion not based on facts! You believe this, yet the majority don't. You failed to consult mana whenua as well in your decision making so how can this bill be legit? You are breach of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Everyone has access to health care. You are a walking contradiction!
bill be legit? do you even know what bill is? I know you are talking shit when you think you know what the majority think. maybe in your little echo chamber bud.
Its time māori govern their own ..trying to constantly battle for the crown to honor their part of the treaty is a joke...let kiwis do there thing and māori do theirs
You also mention it is wrong to separate race in statistics and it is divisive. How exactly? Are you a statistician? No, you are a Politician. You are saying it should not be done this or that way, where is your evidence based from? Your own subjective thinking? Again you are a walking contradiction. Make it make sense, because you making an issue out of nothing. Māori were here first, they formed that agreement with the Crown, so that should not change for anyone. All Non-Māori hail from other places so they will know, if they dont know, now they know!
Playing the race card. All he is speaking about is Maori Maori Maori. This needs to be taken down focus. Dont give him any air time to spread his racist blurb. He doesn't and never has spoken for Maori. Particularly Maori
@@DossNZwe both know that's not true. To get on people need jobs...oops no jobs...better healthcare ...oops healthcare gone downhill. Pray tell me how does Maori affects these Coalition decisions that affect everyone
@jovowles9813 No I really don't. What I've been hearing in recent years is negative and hurtful. Now someone is trying to change that. Truly, to my suprise and frustration, now the nastiness is aimed at supposedly good things being taken away. What? There were actual good things people forgot to mention? I've had it, you've had it too by the sound of it. Let the sunlight in. It's been very depressing for people with alternative views.

Many cultures have been brutally colonized in the past and alot of people's ancestors will have suffered horribly throughout history. That doesn't make it right to keep on repeating the same pattern over and over again because it's convenient for those at the top.
Treaty is between and consented to by Maori towards the foreign coloniser and last I checked Maori havent been consulted on minor party Act and Hobsons Pledge little Treaty Bill, it will be wiped off the map very soon
Act party seems against tangatawhenua when he says there is racism in all key areas of govt he is creating anti Maori rhetoric where it just isn't necessary he is creating bs govt took Maori Mana away by not letting them be themselves taxpayers pay your wages and more
