Hypnosis is a specific form of brain activity that involves highly focused attention, coupled with dissociation, openness to suggestion, and an enhanced ability to modulate perception. New evidence regarding the neural activity underlying hypnosis will be presented, including studies employing event-related potentials, PET and fMRI. Our recent resting state fMRI data demonstrate functional connectivity between the executive control and salience networks among high but not low hypnotizable individuals. Furthermore, we have found that entering the hypnotic state involves reduced activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate gyrus, a key part of the salience network, increased functional connectivity between the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), a key part of the executive control network, and the insula, which processes mind-body control and pain, and inverse connectivity between the DLPFC and the default mode network, which processes self-reflection. The hypnotic ability to focus attention and modulate perception has clear clinical application, especially in pain and anxiety control. Randomized clinical trials that we have conducted demonstrate the efficacy of hypnosis in reducing pain, anxiety, somatic complications, and procedure duration during radiological interventions. Other RCTs show that hypnosis provides relief of chronic cancer pain. In addition, techniques employing hypnosis are effective in controlling various neuromuscular disorders and PTSD. Hypnosis is an effective brain-based skill that can be easily taught for controlling a variety of psychological and somatic problems.
Dr. David Spiegel is Willson Professor and Associate Chair of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Director of the Center on Stress and Health, and Medical Director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he has been a member of the academic faculty since 1975, and was Chair of the Faulty Senate from 2010-2011. Dr. Spiegel has 40 years of clinical and research experience studying, hypnosis, psycho-oncology, stress and health, pain control, psychoneuroendocrinology, and sleep. He has published twelve books, 385 scientific journal articles, and 170 book chapters on hypnosis, psychosocial oncology, stress physiology, trauma, and psychotherapy. His research has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute on Aging, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, and the MacArthur, Fetzer, Dana, and Cummings Foundations. He is Past President of the American College of Psychiatrists and the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, and is a Member of the National Academy of Medicine.

Thank goodness hypnosis is being used in this way as I see so many of my clients benefit from hypnotic trance as part of their psychotherapeutic journey. I never went into psychotherapy with a view to use hypnosis but it’s now part of my integrated practice and I wouldn’t be without it. Thank you to all those pioneers before us for their perseverance with it🙏

There is also especially during hetrohypnosis a decrease in activity in the Parietal cortex & I would suggest a shift from left prefrontal cortex beta waves to a more symmetrical alpha-theta activity resulting in an increase in parasympathetic activity.

Excellent presentation!! But there's one thing I must quibble with, based on my own experience as a hypnotist and my observations of master hypnotists: your assumption is that because some people have a profile that makes them difficult to drop, that that means they can't be. That's a logical error. Give me your toughest subject, and I would tap them out mentally--using a combination of confusion & eye-fixation--then when they're just about to overload (like literally stand up and stop the induction because you're pushing them to the limit of mental stress), that's when you yank that hand, SLEEP, and it's lights out. You should watch master hypnotists, such as Michael White or Anthony Jacquin: they'll show you this thing called hypnotizability is subservient to operator expertise.
@rubyblu21
@rubyblu21 2 года назад
I think the reason some people claim not everyone can be induces is a caveat for clients not willing to participate fully but also because the harder hitting techniques quickly descend into MK Ultra territory.

isn't your method somewhat traumatic, and then make it less effective or raise new issues?
@Michael-qh1ip
@Michael-qh1ip 26 дней назад
@@freshgasflow What specifically would make it traumatic? You seem to be simply projecting your own fears and assumptions. There's nothing traumatic about it. She's simply talking about overloading the conscious mind to induce a state of trance. Now if you said "open your eyes" and they woke up with some kind of weapon in their face, or a clown mask, that might be kind of traumatic. In a normal circumstance, they're simply going to fall into a state of deep relaxation and inner focus and be open and receptive to positive suggestions. Simple as that
@Michael-qh1ip
@Michael-qh1ip 26 дней назад
I agree, this as been proven wrong years ago. The whole "hypnotizability" thing is (mostly) bs. The orignal study on hypnotizability ahd a bunch of people sit in a room and listen to the same record (the same induction). Some people ARE more "hypnotizable" than others, the "others" just need a different type of induction, as everyone is different, and take in information differently. John Kappas (among others) discovered this years ago, with their model of physical and emotional suggestibility and the whole spectrum of everything in between. They do take a little more work, but everyone is hypnotizable if they want to be. It's a natural state, but I'm sure you already know this. I just like to mention Kappas, as well as the original study to set the record straight. Oh, and the Jacquins' are absolutely amazing.

You can shut off a very precise region of the brain depending on what you say to the patient :wow:
@martinwilliams9866
@martinwilliams9866 2 года назад
So you could suggest that negative symptoms are decreasing etc & becoming more distant & that positive sensations are increasing & becoming closer, in order to stimulate different areas of the brain.

Hi, I have a few questions please How I know I am under hypnosis? How to be protected myself from hypnosis How to back to the normal state of mind after being hypnotized for something?
@JensHilzensauer
@JensHilzensauer 2 года назад
You know, because it is very similar to dreaming on a sunday morning right before waking up. At this point where your dreams are very vivid, you know you are dreaming and you can consciously decide: do I want to get up to pee or do I stay in bed another 5min. You don't need protection: Studies show you can't be hypnotized against your will. Only if you consider the hypnotic language used in ADs hypnosis. If that counts, you are never not in hypnosis. You either use an exduction, basically an induction in a reverse order or you fall asleep and wake up normally after whatever time is normal for your level of fatigue.

Interesting lecture but i disagree in regards to the statement that stage hypnosis is 'wrong' .This is the same kind of thinking christian science has about hypnosis ..People 'volunteer' to go on stage knowing that they will be doing some out of the ordinary things on stage ..That is why they volunteer and they will not do anything that is greatly against there deep ethics or morals ... Its not exploitation as you suggest , its entertainment ...Not to mention , that stage hypnosis is what kept hypnosis alive during the early 20th century ..otherwise great lecture..Also Everyone is hypnotisable ..if they cant be hypnotised then they are either resisting or the practitioner is not very good
@fasfan
@fasfan Год назад
I agree with you about stage hyonosis, but I think there are some stage hypnotists that do overly ridiculous stuff to exploit the volunteers. If someone is volunteering then you have a responsibility to them. Sure they're going to do some silly stuff, but it shouldn't be horribly embarrassing or out of character. Again, i agree with you. I don't so stage hyonosis but I do impromptu or street hyonosis. And I feel part of my job is to be an embassador for hypnosis. Part of my job is to educate people on how safe and useful hypnosis is.
@ceres1016

@@fasfan Yes ive seen some stage hypnotists take it too far and they shouldnt i agree ..but after doing close to 100 shows not once have i got a complaint but plenty of volunteers enjoying themselves ..its a shame this academic hasnt any real world experience in this arena to back up his claim
