How will she be remembered and thought about in 50-100 years depends on a lot of things. We just don't know. Churchill, died 1965 the most respected leader of the country, now we have people who want to tear his statues down.
Queen Elizabeth's biggest achievement will be surviving longer than any other monarch. All those historical greats: Plantagenet, Tudor, Stuart, Hanover, faced similar threats from 'dark forces' within and without and ultimately failed, as will the house of Windsor. But, if ancient monarchs could see this country's achievements, they would be happy with Queen Elizabeth II standing on their shoulders.
There was a third aspect to her Majesty's reign. It began in 1971 when she fought "almost single handedly" against her own politicians to keep the Commonwealth together. Her passion for the Commonwealth and her determination not to abandon them after her politicians had abandoned them by joining the EU in 1975 showed her true strength. Quietly, positively and determined to keep the Commonwealth together Her Majesty showed a true strength that she will be remembered for with great love and admiration.
@@Beetless Listen to Her Majesty's speeches including those on Commonwealth tours. The look at her actions holding the Commonwealth together 1973 - 1980. Reinvigorating the Commonwealth Heads of Government and creating the Commonwealth Secretariat in 1965 with the addition of 30 new countries under her reign. Understanding our history is always good.
I don't think that the Queen looked like a broken old woman when she was walking among the rubble after the fire in Windsor castle. She looked quite energetic and businesslike to me.
Usual excellent analysis. And to think the BBC are not bright enough to understand that most people in this country would like to see DS presenting more historical programmes. There again, we are just the people who pay their wages.
is it time for we the people to demand the Queen to prorogue parliament under her own Royal prerogative and clear parliament of these undemocratic self serving prigs and call a general election also allowing the sovereign peoples referendum leave mandate to be in-acted . or is that to much to expect from the Queen who swore an oath to protect the people and our country from all who wish to except foreign Rule / Dictatorship on this great land of ours.
In the Queen's 2004 Birthday Honours List, Tony Blair submitted a peerage for the former Labour politician - Ted Rowlands. This was the same Ted Rowlands, who, at the beginning of the Falklands War, used parliamentary privilege to divulge the secret that Britain was reading all Argentine diplomatic and naval codes (any ordinary citizen would've faced prosecution and a prison sentence). The Queen "Rubber-stamped" the request and the "Noble Lord" sits in the upper house of our parliament. When Dr Starkey describes her as supine, would this be a prime example?
So happy to have found him in my family tree. I had no previous knowledge of him until finally researching further into my name. while not closely related , im proud to be of any relation to this great mind. As an American outsider, id argue his brilliance and importance to the boldest of Brits
King John lost half of France . Elizabeth lost remnants of Empire and overseeing breakup of UK while being imprisoned in EU for 40yrs. Must be next to worst UK monarch ever despite being very hard working. Maybe she just reigned asa t the wrong time and of course had lousy govts of left and right
What was she supposed to do expand the empire, eat some of Russia China or USA? Look up history bud they couldn't keep the empire because with things like radio people were now conscious they were being ruled over
One Windsor who has kept her oath, the oath at her Coronation., and her marriage oath How many of her offspring, and indeed her forebears, have kept theirs ??
How will she be judged on allowing the UKs accession to the EU in 1973 David? She failed in her sovereign duty to guard against foreign powers gaining influence over the U.K.. She chose lifestyle over duty.
I guess she did a good job based on what they seemed to have defined as the job a pr person with no opinions but of what real policy use is a leader with no opinions and no policies? Kings were supposed to actually rule and also how do you have a system of position by inheritance and base success on being inscrutable like a sphinx. Bad character is usually the result when people are too rich and spoiled. Its lucky Charles and William are good people but others like Andrew and Harry are disasters.. I like Charles and William but find the whole set up of what this is all about odd.
Although the Queen has carried out her duties well, unfortunately she has made bad errors in judgement, by: not stopping Charles getting involved with politics, by not stopping him marrying Diana when he clearly did not love her, by not telling Andrew to grow up after his farcical travels as supposed trade envoy when he just wanted money, travel free & to play golf, by giving all grand-children titles when they should be doing what Zara & Peter did & go out to work, & by giving titles to those marrying into the family!
Yah this is not another Elizabethan age and no other monarch will have an ‘age’ or ‘era’. The monarchy has very little to do with anything anymore, and we have instant ‘celebrities’ that are famous for nothing now to obsess about. No power, political or cultural… aside from gossip and glamour, the monarchy is basically irrelevant. We will remember the Queen as dutiful honourable and reliable, but sadly as a pretty bad parent.
No leader should hang-on for this long a period of time. Surpassing Victoria's reign, okay, I can understand that as sort of an ego-trip but it's time to step-down. Wouldn't she like to see Charles or whoever ascend the throne before she leaves this earth? I've long-admired Elizabeth, certainly wish her the best, it's hard to imagine a world without her, but Britain will survive, believe me!
The Queen has managed the passage from the inborn idolatry of the 50's to the self-centredness of the noughties perfectly, she has been serene throughout, almost flawless. The same is not true for any of her family, except Anne, who has worked tirelessly. The fact we will be lumbered with Charles as king, a dullard eco-warrior who arrives in a private jet at taxpayer expense will not go down well I hope, after Elizabeth, the monarchy does not survive in its current form.
@@adamhoff4822 well according to the story the full sized commissioned portrait was disliked by Mrs Windsor Dracul - because it shows a sinister evil aspect to her face . Check it your self . According to the conspiracy this is the reason Harris went down rather than the pedo allegations - bear in mind 100+ members of the royal staff have been convicted for sexual assaults . Harris was a long time associate of the Royals ect .
I've been a supporter of the monarchy for as long as I can remember. But I honestly believe that when Queen Elizabeth does pass away there will be a push for Britain to become a Republic. Prince Charles and William are too involved, especially around the environmental issues we currently face. I think they should definitely stay but not be paid for my the tax payers but instead use their fame as a financial enterprise
@@awestruckbeaver3344 I'm military and emergency service family, some both..but they no longer embody the nation..just a family franchise 😒 the time has come sad to say..
@@jayturner3397 agree with you. The queen is one of a kind and has done quiet well to keep under the radar and mostly keep herself clean of controversy. Charles and William keep poking their noses in and giving their two cents from their ivory towers, and Harry is a bin fire. Wouldn't surprise me if we have a referendum in the next 15 years for the UK to ditch the monarchy.
@@awestruckbeaver3344 I think we have a massive fight on our hands to stave off globalisation, but yes we must clean house from the top down..and let's not forget our Bill of rights act for England and Wales 1688/9 precludes undue influence from Foreign potentates..That will be the next fight 😉 am 65 now so......lol
Just wanted to say how much we miss you and ask if there is any chance of you coming back to our TV screens? We are heartily sick of the likes of Lucy Worsley and co looking for the excuse to dress up or preen and posture in front of the camera. Unlike you, they choose to get in the way of what they are supposed to be telling us about, and make any programme actually all about them. This of course takes the focus away from the whole point of the programme. What a loss you are. Best wishes, George and Donella East
