David Suchet CBE performs Saleri's speech in Act 1, Scene V of Peter Shaffer's play 'Amadeus' at A Service of Thanksgiving to celebrate the life and work of Sir Peter Hall CBE, held at Westminster Abbey on Tuesday 11th September 2018.
'Amadeus' by Peter Shaffer gives a highly fictionalised account of the lives of composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. It was first performed in 1979 at the National Theatre, directed by Peter Hall. The play was later adapted into a film directed by Miloš Forman.
The play was revived in 1999 at the Music Box Theatre, New York City, directed again by Peter Hall and received Tony Award nominations for Best Revival and Best Actor in a Play for David Suchet as played Salieri.
Sir Peter Hall died in 2017 after a long and distinguished career in British theatre.
David Suchet is best known for playing Hercule Poirot in the TV series 'Agatha Christine's Poirot'.

He's like an orchestra in himself; people talk about 'commanding' actors but he's out of sight.

I was lucky enough to see and meet this WONDERFUL gentleman/actor in NYC in January 2000. After the show, he signed autographs. My tactic is to be the last, as I had him all to myself! I'd seen him in King John/RSC in Stratford in 1974. At this NYC meeting, we talked for about 10 to 15 minutes. I'll always remember it!!!

@@writeract2 definitely agree with you. Paul Scofield was another great actor along with Anthony Hopkins. Just commanding talented actors.

Why is he shouting? I don't think high volume adds anything to the deliverance of this monologue.

I love David Suchet, but no one can match F. Murray Abraham as Salieri!
@victorpierce2527
@victorpierce2527 3 года назад
@David Logan One thing to consider is that this is more of a theater performance where you have to project your voice to the entire audience. F. Murray Abraham had the luxury of delivering soft spoken dialogue since his was a film performance.

Wonderful acting , but this play doesn't do much service to either Mozart or Salieri, good theatre though .

What's the context? Those Anglican clergy in vestments... have they ignored the words "my house shal be a house of prayer...but you have turned it into"? A theatre, an antiques road show venue, a museum?
