Hasn't been a real, tangible action plan for people to "walk the walk" until just recently. All activism before was hopeful and meant well, but didn't have an actually plan of action that people could undertake in their own communities to create a better system of healthy, sustainable living. That isn't the case anymore. There is a viable action plan. One Small Town initiative from Michael Tellinger, sweeping the world, already started in Lebanon and South Africa and primed to begin in dozens of countries all over the world including Canada and the US. This is how change happens, a dedicated small group of passionate people committed to a better world, showing people how it can be done and then offering them the opportunity to do the same where they live. Contributionism and cooperation is a healthy way forward. The unsustainable system we have now is not working: private control over the means of production like a planetary "going out of business sale."
@luciavalente1002
@luciavalente1002 Год назад
I watched The Nature of Things for years. The reality is that the majority of the people I know just do not care about our planet. They have some awareness of the problems that our earth is facing due to our massive consumerism. We know that governments and business will not do what needs to be done. We, as individuals, can do something - there are enough of us in the developed world to make a difference. People find me weird that I do care and try, in my little way, to make decisions to live with a lighter footprint. One small example, I grow a lot of my own vegetables. Some vegetables are easy to grow. My neighbours' reactions are that its too much trouble and its easier to go to the store to buy them. And we live in the countryside with lots of land - we have huge gardens and available land.
@coolioso808
@coolioso808 Год назад
Just want you to know you are not alone. There are MANY like-minded people who want to see a better, healthier, more sustainable world come about. I appreciate what you do to try and help, but you are right, there are enough of us - but what has been missing? A realistic plan of action. I've spent many years thinking about this and researching. People do care, but when you say to someone "climate change is massive issue, we got to stop consuming and wasting resources!" the sad fact is that in this capitalist-driven machine we gotta go to work, gotta get paid and pay the bills and bills cost money, which means we use up more resources. It is a vicious cycle, you see? But, if you were able to come to people in your community and say, "Look, who here cares about making life more livable? Reducing cost of living and financial stress? Increasing sustainability and health. Most would probably say yes. But how?" That's where an action plan can come in. One Small Town strategy, see the website and channel with Michael Tellinger for more. But the idea is that we need a localized model for contributionism, collaboration and cooperation to build sustainable abundance and prosperity of things we need, increasingly so without money and wasting valuable resources. That's what One Small Town platform gives communities a chance to do. What do you think?

The reality is that individuals have very little to no power in affecting global climate. 100 Corporation are responsible for creating 70% of the global emissions. Why is this happening? Hmm, let's see. We have a capitalist world economic system that requires private companies to constantly try to exploit nature and humans for profiteering gains, growing consumption and using ruthless competitive self-interest to try and monopolize the market. That's the rules of the game. No where in the rules of capitalism does sustainability, preservation and efficiency factor in for any significant way. This is why we are all in this mess, worldwide. The system is the sickness, folks. And we need to cut it out to cure ourselves. We don't change things by fighting the existing reality, but by knowing the problem, we can build a new model that makes this current one obsolete. Thanks to folks like R. Buckminster Fuller, Jacque Fresco, Peter Joseph, Matthew Holten and Michael Tellinger we have options to get from here to there.

However, problem is, hemp is a very fast growing, eco-friendly, versatile crop that can be used for thousands of different things, including biodegradable plastic. An abundance of uses from a simple crop that can grow just about anywhere, including indoors. Now, how is a capitalist going to make massive profits on a crop that is abundant? They can't. So capitalists do what the system encourages them to do: Squash anything abundant and find something that is scarce or can be controlled to be artificially scared like oil and gas. Oh, that's just the tip of the iceberg. If you want to go mad by how much better our lives could all be in the capitalist system didn't crush innovation for abundance? Look at what JP Morgan did to Nikola Tesla's inventions, especially the one about free wireless energy transmission. I think once people wake up to the instability of this system and then they are presented with a real, tangible pathway out of this mess, they will jump on it. One Small Town-strategy style.

You know, David, you indeed failed because you spent all of your time on the science that far too many people neither understood nor believed. I once wrote the Suzuki Foundation pleading with them to recruit economists and social engineers to go to resource communities and work on helping them build different economies. I got a terribly dismissive response that said this is not their mission. The problem isn’t the politicians; the problem is this bloody human construct we call “the economy” and if you can’t “show” people real concrete alternatives, nothing will change.

@@aquaticborealis4877 Ah, but he talks about the failure of the movement. Obviously, he wasn’t good at communication because it hasn’t worked … remember, the piece is about the failure of the environmental movement. Look, David Suzuki is an amazing guy, but the problem with the environmental movement has always been that they haven’t examined their own strategies; they haven’t asked the hard questions about themselves, “Why aren’t people seeing the bloody obvious?” Neither can they take criticism. Hell, obviously the message isn’t wrong and if we assume that to be true, then the strategy for communicating the message AND solutions is the problem. You can’t just talk “at” people, you need to give them real alternatives. You need to work on public policy, the kind that will protect the oil driller’s pension she’s paid into for 25 years when she transfers to building windmills or whatever. You need to make public transportation free and mandatory and you also need to make it possible for a pet owner to get his pet to the vet when travelling on public transportation. You need to convince people it is good to holiday near home, eschew destination weddings, and to forgo endless home renovations, in favour of quality and permanence, and, finally, to quit throwing perfectly good “stuff” in the landfill. Then you can move on to the built-in obsolescence of commerce and industry, and to take a damned critical look at our economic system, greed and corporate malfeasance.

@aquaticborealis4877 Год назад
@@dougthomson5544 Suzuki has a foundation, he’s worked with lots of people. I don’t blame him one bit. He may say that he failed, but it’s everyone else, particularly industry and politicians. Industry (mostly resource) and wealthy conservatives have poured millions upon millions into disinformation and fighting against progress at every step of the way. Just look at what the vehicle industry did in the US with lobbying to have large SUVs and pick up trucks classified as light duty trucks to reduce regulations. They deliberately marketed these vehicles to Americans (and Canadians) who did not need them. Musk is also guilty of marketing Tesla as a cure to environmental concerns of vehicles. A lot of vehicles use electricity generated from fossi fuels. He also got huge amounts of subsidies. It is very hard to compete against industries who spend hundreds of millions fighting against environmental causes, and often bribing or intimidating politicians. They can directly affect legislation in ways that is extremely hard for average citizens to do.
@dougthomson5544
@dougthomson5544 Год назад
@@briangraham1024 Well, not all economists are the same, still I’d tend to agree with you. Regardless, you still have to build something that presents an alternative to what exists because what we have is killing us. The irony is that capitalism has given us amazing technological advancements that impact most every part of our lives however, it might also be the human construct that destroys our reign on earth and leave the planet to the extremophiles. And, really we don’t have a strategy to deal with that. David Suzuki can prattle on about clean energy, but that won’t solve our problems, either. In some ways we seem to think that if we install enough windmills, solar cells, tidal power, whatever, we will solve our problems, but we won’t. Our projections are for humanity to consume more and more energy as third world nations demand more and more of the comforts we Westerners have long enjoyed. But, regardless how we obtain that energy, turning it into work creates heat. We are loading our atmosphere more and more heat and that fact is seldom considered. We might be able to solve much of the CO2 problem, but not the direct thermal loading. Every engine, every electric motor, every steel mill, every battery factory, every rotating wheel, every light bulb, computer, phone, car, bus, train, walking human creates heat.

What would be nice to hear from this grandfather is: "Stop having children!" But it seems that David Suzuki does not have the intellectual courage to do so. If not a single human baby is born in 'the civilized world' (excluding the people of the North Sentinel Island and other isolated tribes) for 44 YEARS, humankind can still be a viable species on this planet. (The babies that are at age 0 today would be able to procreate --if they so wished-- to ensure the continuation of our species.) In other words, those who keep bringing children to this world are DOING HUMANKIND NO FAVOR! Generations (OF MILLIONS OF SPECIES) to come will certainly be paying for the crimes and mistakes of us who are living today, no matter what we do. Fair points! True "hope means nothing without action to go along with it" as well as, from Buckminster Fuller: "You don't change things by fighting the existing reality, to change things you create a new model to make the current model obsolete." We don't need a strict checklist, but we do need a realistic, localized action plan that communities can adopt, but from which the innovations and technologies and "what works" can be shared to create more self-sufficient communities of abundance and prosperity. This is possible now with the One Small Town strategy plan of action. Already started in Lebanon and South Africa, poised to start in Canada and towns all around the world. Question is? Are we going to get involved? It will be voluntary, but the choice, I think, will become pretty obvious. What do people have to offer? Whatever their skills or interests are. How much time? Three hours per week. How is this better? Because "many hands make light work" and cooperation and collaboration is better than the system of monetary-market ruthless competition for profits.

Energy resources will diminish, creating economic upheaval and in some places even collapse. Everything will become immensely expensive. There will be great competition and a great risk of conflict and war over gaining access to the remaining resources. Certain regions will be devastated. Others will be impaired. Many industries will fail. There will be many people out of work. There will be the risk of great starvation in many parts of the world, even in parts of the wealthy nations. There will have to be ever-increasing international agreements. Food will have to be distributed where it is needed most. It's better than never for "woke-katers" to be involved whether at beginner or exceptional stage in the challenge to a balanced eco world. Not without gratitude to the fossil fuel industry that has given our past parental generation a relief to live. Compared to the talks of today shoving it out away paints a constipated artistic view, which dilutes the motive and will to survive for all. I appreciate the changes that comes through from the trustable and worthy eye. That sees out of "caring". The drop in food output could begin quite soon, perhaps only ten years from now. The regions destined to feel its impact are the great wheat-producing lands of Canada, the USSR in the north, along with a number of marginally self-sufficient tropical areas - parts of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indochina, and Indonesia - where the growing season is dependent upon the rains brought by the monsoon"..."In England, farmers have seen their growing season decline by about two weeks since 1950, with a resultant over-all loss in grain production estimated at up to 100,000 tons annually." John Holdren - Global Ecology: Readings toward a rational strategy for man (1971) Claimed human activities were "responsible for the present world cooling trend". "Jet exhausts" and "man-made changes in the reflectivity of the earth's surface through urbanization, deforestation, and the enlargement of deserts". It predicted "carbon dioxide induced famines by year 2000". John Holdren was Obama's lead scientist. Paul R. His society just asks for money and neither comes up with or listens to ideas. When asked about solutions he talks about blue jeans instead of hemp based clothes. He was against biochar because he hadn't studied it enough. Rather than electric cars why didn't he push really small cars, scooters, cargo bikes or velomobiles every one using a fraction of the energy and much easier on the environment. Heavy industry wastes enormous amounts of energy and resources without a second thought because it's so cheap. Many more things but you won't hear any from him. Weather is a 'snapshot', or a 'one-off'.... climate is a repeatable trend that plays out consistently over decade/centuries. The Sahara has a desert climate. You do realize the Pacific Northwest tribes were explored well into the Era of Discovery and their 'lands' pointed out to ship captains by the various chiefs of the Salish Sea north to the retreating glaciers all revolved around the SHORE tidelands, fingernail-thin beach heads with towering silent reckless forest behind. They were all MARINE cultures and never left the beach. I'm old as Suzuki and explored outer Prince of Wales by dugout and on foot. I probably made it a half-mile inland through the vines and devil's club and then back down, cut and shredded, bled by no see'ums, gnats, mosquitoes, deer flies and horse flies into a small pox. That was a horrible night. The tribes that survived got their ancestral settlements and except for the Makah, their full fishing rights. So there are no 'lands to be returned'. Why doesn’t Suzuki condemn the Asian countries as the biggest contributors to CO2 , China is building more coal fired power stations to power its wasteful manufacturing industries which dump millions of cheap consumer goods on the world market. Then what about INDIA it’s population is soaring out of control, 1.4 billion people now and they all want a high consuming Western lifestyle. Asia has more than half the worlds population in an area of about 5%of the earths surface including oceans , a very concentrated population if they continue to modernise and demand the wasteful consumer way of life the worlds environment will suffer , imagine China and India with the equal standard of living as the USA, 2 billion more cars on the road for a start ,the answer is reduce population and Asia is the worst offender.

I thought Suzuki was dead. I will be just like Suzuki and care for the environment once I have made my millions, have several large homes and properties and of course the cars. Suzuki got his and I’m going to get mine as well and I think that climate change gravy train will get it for me as well. David Suzuki and the CBC are not worth listening too. Bo

Who was crying wolf? All climate activists have ever said is that our planet will get hotter and climate crisis worse if we do not radically change our society. Perhaps you are thinking of the facebook posts or fox news hours that deride non-existent leftists who supposedly predict the impending apocolypse. You are old, so I forgive some of your ignorance- a whole lifetime of capitalist propoganda tends to hollow out one's head.
