I recently made the switch from the Adobe Suite but was struggling to understand nodes. This video relating the two workflows was SUPER helpful. Great video!
Thanks Michael. Glad to hear it helped. Nodes are super powerful once you get to grips with them. If there's anything specific you'd like to see, let me know.
Until recently, I used FCP+Motion and I'm also a big Apple fanboy. After studying Davinci Resolve with its Fusion tab for several months, I'm not going back to FCP+Motion. Now it's much easier and faster for me to work in Fusion. Thank you for your content and a nice smile =)
I have to confess, even though I commented on this video 2 months ago, I never got around to actually finishing the full thing and it's been starting at me at the bottom of my watch later playlist that whole time. Finally got to it today and now I'm excited to play around in fusion, wish I got on this earlier aiya! The node system got me excited, gotta look for a good full fusion interface walkthrough now, you made it much less scary than it used to be. Whenever I'd accidentally click on the fusion tab I'd think "I'm not supposed to be here 😳". Now it's gonna be "what can I make 🤔". Reminds me of when I first learned after effects, so it's kinda nostalgic in a way! I also just want to say If BlackMagic ever goes downhill and I have to switch AGAIN, it's kinda beautiful to know that people will always find a way to adapt to new working environments. Thanks again for the video Ryan, your camera setup is really pleasing to look at too btw, fits the gradient theme of the vid really well. 👍
Thank you so much dude! That’s such a lovely comment to read and I’m super buzzed for you that you’re learning a new skill. Fusion is great! Welcome to the club 😊😊
This video was a life saver. Really helped me to Click the nods in my head as well understand the viability to completely replace after effects for my needs. Thanks man, doind gods work here.
This tutorial is both extremely helpful and extremely well done. Concise, well thought out, and perfectly descriptive. The accent is just a huge bonus.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing interesting, informative videos for professionals without goofing off and acting silly (like many other Resolve RU-vidrs) Keep it up!
Thanks so much for this video! I've been looking for a good replacement for AE for a long time. I've been using DaVinci Resolve as an editor, but the integration of Fusion makes it a dealbreaker... I'm sold.
I was a long time Adobe subscriber, but ever since windows 11 I switched to Linux, now I can happily say that I removed windows completely from my old hard drive, I got 50 bucks a month extra and also have 1TB more for my davinci projects and footage. Thanks for the tutorial, very nicely executed.
im still using premiere pro but i want to change to Da vinci resolve. ill come back later when to learn more about fusion because your explanation is out of this world.
Perfect channel for me. I couldn't take the death hold ADOBE and their 'subscribe' to everything strategy. I dumped 100% of my adobe workflows and for video, moving to DaVinci - so super thanks!
I have been trying for over a year to understand Fusion and I still can't do it....until now. This tutorial has helped me understand it in a way I never thought I could. Now I think of each stack as the one layer in AE, but uncollapsed if that makes sense. Oh man. This has helped me so muxh
I was still confused about fusion after watching lots of videos on YT. But after watching your video i am clr how it works… You rocks bro..keep making amazing stuff
But After Effects is better in many aspects. I can’t understand this hype about Fusion in recent time. Two main advantages of Fusion are: 1) It’s free, 2) Nodes. All other features are worse than in AE.
This might be one of the clearest explainer videos for Fusion I've ever seen. Quick question: everything that you did is some of that only possible in studio?
One thing that can get annoying when you find tutorials like this, is if the presenter has an annoying voice or accent. It is therefore an absolute GODSEND if the presenter has a Scottish accent. Useful AND sonically pleasing. 😀
Thank you, I can now feed my family with the money I've saved from adobe by watching this video. Seriously though, you're saving people headaches! Also love ur accent bro it made the vid 10x better 😁
i reduced my Adobe subscription to Ps an Lr and switch from Premiere to Davinci, because i like the philosophy of Blackmagic much more. As an Comp-Artist (working in Nuke) i am used to nodes and switched for privat Projects from Ae to fusion a long time ago.
Just came across this while I make the change from Pr to Resolve. Not sure if Fusion will replace everything I do in Ae, but it's super helpful to see it instantly in the edit timeline
@@RyanOsborneUK couldn't agree more. Ae does so much now that I don't think one program can replace it, but seeing you do some actual mograph stuff with fusion makes it WAY easier to stay in resolve now
Thanks for this. Just what I was looking for; a simple explanation of how nodes work and what the various coloured arrows and squares attached to them mean. It's still going to take a while for me to get my head round this. It all seems quite unintuitive after working with AfterEffects. But at least I know where to start now.
Awesome tutorial for someone with AE experience... relating it all back to AE was super helpful, and I'm not feeling node-shy anymore. Resolve Studio is looking more and more like a must have. If I can just map 80% or so of my Media Composer keys this might be a done deal.
Fusion - Compositing, AE - VFX, Motion Graphics, 2D Animations (not sure if Fusion is good with 3D compositing but overall if u cant afford Nuke, Fusion is the next best choice)
@@VfxKopele Fusion's 3D capabilties are better than Nuke, miles better, lookup the Fusion demos from 2011, they were running production level comps all in Fusion in realtime on a desktop without caching, it was all running on GPU.
This is the best tutorial on YT which allows me to understand the basics of nodes and I made my first animation in Fusion 🤟 Thanks for that! Casey Faris tutorial is way too complicated and overloaded. Your way gives absolutely the minimum amount of required knowledge to begin with. By the way, I love your accent. Are you from the "Celtic" part of the UK?
Hey great intro into switching from After Effects to Fusion. I've been using after effects for over 20 years and it's hard going from layers to nodes. Thanks for the comparisons here. You did make it easy to follow along in Fusion as I watched, I switched to Davinci 3 years ago from Premiere and haven't looked back but still use after effects because I'm used to it. But I own Studio Resolve and love how BMDesign keeps updating it to be more powerful than Adobe. I'd love to end my ties and subscription for After Effects and use Fusion. Are there more tutorials comparing coming from After effects to Fusion I could look at? I do a lot more that title intros in After Effects such as 3D models and CGI and Have yet to see any tutorials as such for Fusion.
Thank you @Robroy333 🙌 my latest video might be of use to you too. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c4Zw5hf8TS0.html Making the switch is definitely hard. I was in your shoes about 2 years ago but I managed to make the switch fully, to the point that I don’t go back to Adobe anymore. More AE -> Fusion tutorials to come 👍
love the content, though after effects is my main tool I am always looking for alternatives to use or to make my workflow better. Hope you keep making videos like this!
Hi Ryan, thanks again for another very helpful tutorial! I really like your style of explaining as well as the length of your videos. Just about perfect - I really mean that. I hope you continue to upload these kind of videos. Success will follow! Greetings from Vienna PS. I'm just a little curious but your accent is unique. May I ask where you're from?
This is a very informative video. Now that Adobe has become predatory, I'm looking for an alternative. DaVinci Resolve looks like a potential candiate.
wonderful tut, thanks. i'm still wondering if I should bother to get used to davinci when these days I'm doing less effect work and more just basic trimming and joining of a lot of videos with minimal editing
Thanks for the video! How are you snapping each node to line up with one another? I like keeping my workspace clean but can't ever line everything up together.
Hey! Right click in the node viewer, there should be an option where you can check on “align to grid” 🙂 I also need a clean workspace 😂 slightly ocd with it!
Great intro video. I have a question: What are the advantages and disadvantages of a node-based system over a layer based one? What works better in nodes than in layers? To me, layers seem more intuitive but I'd be interested in your view.
Thanks Patrick! In a general sense, layers and nodes work in a very similar way. They’re just a different way of approaching compositions. I’ve found that nodes are great for complex masking work where you can use one mask node to mask multiple different pieces of the composition really easily. Layers are simpler to understand at a glance but broadly speaking, you can do most things with either approach.
Thanks for the answer! I've been using After Effects for 20 years and I'm thinking of switching to Davinci (because free😊). Have you found anything that AE does that Fusion doesn't do (or vice versa)?
@@patrickmcginley5652 AE has a stronger motion graphics toolset for sure but I’ve yet to find anything that I can’t find a workaround for in Fusion. The best thing about AE is the Dynamic link I.e. the flexibility of working with AI vectors or photoshop files. There is a bit of a workaround if you’re dropping Adobe altogether. What I will say is, as much as I LOVE fusion- sometimes it means more work. But not always. Totally depends on the kind of work you’re doing. Check this video out I made a while back, might help you there! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aoJQsdgN_iw.html It’s more about how Affinity files can be transferred to Resolve but the same logic applies regardless of what tool you’re using Hope this helps my friend.
Okay, I just found a workaround by dragging the composition into the timeline, shortening it there, then dragging it back into the bin and then deleting the original comp. That seems like a pretty weird way of handling things though? (I know it's not your fault 😃)
100% - understanding nodes can actually help you become a better compositor/animator, regardless of the software you use. Understanding the flow of effects is important.
