I think you just helped solve your first “Things I don’t like.” Thanks! Awesome review! BTW, you can expand and shrink Timeline clips to fill the screen with Slider in the middle towards the right. Some of my favorite features: Free LUTS to drag in easily onto the clip node, Scopes to watch your Color grade effects in real time, Effects Library on left side that lets you drag and drop almost any effect onto your clip, and Speed Editor that lets you cut your imported media super fast! What’s yours?

A note on not saving: I recently experienced a DaVinci Resolve crash and forgot to save, so I feared that I lost my 100-ish edits to the interview I was working on. Upon reopening Resolve, I found my project with zero lost edits.

I am brand new to Davinci Resolve. Couple of days experience. I was practicing with different effects and moving videos in. I clicked on something that made my 2nd monitor open. (I was actually just trying to figure out how to have what's called the "source viewer", back, so i could have 2 windows, side by side in the editor, again. It crashed shortly after. I was horrified. I didn't remember saving anything. But. It was all auto-saved! I was able to re-open the project, and I was back up to where I last left the project. Super nice! I've been so happy I made the decision to try to learn Davinci Resolve. I'm still struggling with the node stuff, though.

@@BKLYN48 I haven't used FCPX but in Premiere, autosave is set to save at set intervals. So you can set it to save evry minute if you want (I had it at 10 mins) but every time it saves, the software pauses. Maybe 1/4 a second, maybe 5 seconds on a huge project (and I'm on a 7950x with a 4090 and 128gb DDR5. So its not a slow hardware issue. But you still risk losing time, even when it saves every 10 mins. You re-open (praying the autosave file isn't corrupt) and then have to figure out how far back it's put you, then re-do your edits. DR saves after very action and it's imperceptible. No spinning wheels, now greyed out windows, nothing. Just a costant, live backup.

@@koldstudios The UI in Resolve is pretty rigidly set up in general. There are tabs that can be opened and closed, and you can hide some buttons and there are layouts for dual screen. Even Triple screen if you have Studio so you can put the Clean feed on a separate monitor. And some panels can be made floating so they can be moved to a fourth screen. (you can never have too many screens). It took a while to get used to that rigidity... but the upshot is that no matter which computer you use, no matter where you are... and no matter what tutorial you watch or read... if it's updated... the UI should be the same. So standardisation has its pros as well as the cons. And yes. They do encourage users to get their hardware for full hands on workflows. I guess it's part of the reason it's free and even the payed version is just $300 and they have never charge for an update and they stay away from subscription fees. Their main income is from their hardware.

$800 is a bit steep mate. And looking at the breakdown of videos, they average about 10 minutes each. At least 5 "Watch me" videos, likely with no commentary. No mate, I don't want to have to reverse engineer 'no commentary' videos to figure out what's going on, not for 800 quid. I'm downloading the official training from Blackmagic + project files for free as I'm writing this. Basically what this guy did was take the free training from the Blackmagic site and then put together a massively shortened course for $800, lol.

Doesn’t mean the course is bad, it might be good, even after 6 months of usage. It’s about the time and energy that is put in and by how many people. I totally agree. I've been using Resolve Studio for a year now. It's super fast and stable. Incredible software with the bonus of being a lifetime purchase instead of those horrible subscriptions. One thing I can comment on from my personal experience is that it's best to render videos out to something like DNxHR HQ instead of H264. The encoder Resolve uses by default (and also the NVIDIA one) leaves a lot to be desired. Exporting to something like DNxHR and even uploading that directly to RU-vid will make a difference in quality because when RU-vid goes to reencode the video it will be working from a MUCH higher quality copy than H264 renders. And then what I do if I need a H264 deliverable for something else is convert the DNxHR render to H264 using Handbrake or FFMPEG. It will be a higher quality encode doing it this way than through Resolve every time.

There's a free plug-in called Voukoder that uses the high quality FFmpeg encoder to export much better H.264/H.265 video. Pretty much just change the preset to 'Slow' with a CBR of 16 and it works super well. It's a must have plug-in in my opinion.

I don't know if it could help you, but: I made A LOT of H264 exports for a local TV, and since they worked in interlaced and convert to SD (after delivery, for conforming purposes), it was hard to find the perfect setting in order to obtain the right quality for the end product. Well, I found that in Resolve, if you check "2 pass encoding" in the H264 render and set the proper bitrate manually, the file that it produces is actually very good - and now I can export ProRes and H264 in the same time. I don't know if you ever tried it, but if not, I encourage you to do so.

100% AGREE. Adobe Premiere has been one of the powerhouses of the video editing industry for years, and it's wildly unjustified. They have not innovated, they have not improved, they've just shifted their business model from "buy this software" to "kind of buy this software, you don't own it but you pay us forever to rent it". In addition to that, PC users are an inconvenience to them, they have had stability issues for over 20 years, and their response is "just use Mac". It's absolutely unjustified for Premiere to have the dominance in the industry that it does, and the price tag that it has, while there are so many other companies offering more for less. Adobe is screwed once people start opening their eyes. I hope so many people see this video and it sinks in.

The two things I miss about Premiere Pro were: 1. Being able to arrange/resize ANY window in ANY way you want. 2. Though it was pretty clunky, creating smooth speed-ramps was much faster for me in Premiere. In Resolve, you can only click one time-warped keyframe at a time to switch it to a curved keyframe, which is pretty annoying. BUT Resolve does have more control over the easing in and out of each keyframe, and that's super nice.

About the course, I wish that you consider an international payment program, like I am from Brazil and the conversion of dollar to real it is not helping so much haha. Of course it is not you fault, but I think you could make the price a little more affordable for other countries. It looks like we would pay less but if you make the conversion from US$ 799 to real it would be something around R$ 4.189, it turns a little expensive haha, like, no chance of buying. But if you could lower the price a little, it does not need to be R$ 799, but something that we could consider buying it, it would help a lot. You can think that you would earn less money but actually more people would buy, so at the end you would gain more because it is a money that you will not receive because of the devaluation of the other currencies. Thank you for your attention and I wish you all the success :D

Resolve has a lot of great features like color correction and the new voice cleaner/enhancer function that just works. But if you think it will replace everything you are doing now, you will probably be disappointed. Some things are just over complicated for daily use and lot of the ways things are done is just weird. For example, in premiere you drag a clip onto the new timeline icon and it creates a new timeline matching that clip. In Resolve you can't do this. Unless your default timeline matches your current clip, you will need to go in and adjust the settings for it. You will also have to give it a name because it is also incapable of copying the name from the clip. Using Fusion is a whole new game compared to using after effects and really over-complicates simple things. It is also lacking some simple, but extremely useful things like bevel alpha. This is something I use constantly in AE and can't really do without. There is pretty much Zero UI customization. If you have more than one monitor you can use their dual screen setting, but it doesn't solve any real problems because it doesn't let you move the things you want to move. It only moves what whoever designed it thought should be moved. It's so bad that I never even use it. It's better just using the single screen mode. Clicking out of the program will stop ANYTHING except exports. Doing a long motion track? Hope you don't click out to check your email or anything else or it will stop. Want to lick on the next page of the script while you are listening? Playback is going to stop. The cut and media window are just useless. There is no reason for them that I can find. Also whatever genius that created it made it work backwards so the CTI doesn't move, but the whole timeline does. There may be a hidden setting to change this, but it's so useless that I never bothered to look. The deliver page is also a mess. Top left is cluttered with giant icons that scroll sideways and can't be removed, even if you will never use them, instead of a nice searchable list, like media encoder has. It is also cluttered with a giant preview window and timeline, which is also completely unneeded since the edit page is just a click away and much more suitable for any editing needs. The export defaults to no file name, unless you saved a preset, then it tried to name anything you use that preset on to match the name of the file you were exporting when you saved the preset. I also spent a long time manually changing the name to match the timeline name before I found out that there is a check box in the file tab to sue the timeline name. What this isn't the default option and you just type in a new name if you want to change it, doesn't make any sense. Just more wasted time. The edit page has a nice default layout for basic editing, but it has the same problems all the other pages have. Clutter. If you like moving you bins around so you can see all the different bins on your second monitor, too bad. Also, finding all the different buttons to show and hide UI elements can be frustrating. There is a lot of windows that need to be expanded and shrunk down or scrolled to get to you settings which could all be solved if they just let you move them to where you want them on a different monitor. It also lacks an easy way to see stats on your footage. For example I was trying to match some cuts to something done in Premiere and I needed to know where my cursor was in the clip, but I can't find this information anywhere. This is the kind of information that should be displayed full time along with the actual timeline timecode. Another thing is if you have an alpha channel or you have footage that doesn't fill the background and you want to add a solid background to hide the alpha channel. The Color Generator doesn't have a color picker and there doesn't seem to be any way to get find a color in the UI. The highlight of this program is the Color page. Anything I have that needs any kind of color work goes through this program. While I do most of my green screen and graphics work in After Effects, I bring the footage in here to clean up the green screen (or in some cases, just replace it) and adjust colors so the only thing I need to use in after effects is Keylight and not that god awful Lumetri crap. Then I dump out a high quality MP4 for final editing which saves a ton of money on hard drive space. Despite the purists who cry about using anything other than Pro Rez or some other bloated format, I have never had any complaints from TV stations about how my final footage looks. I recently had to do some pretty major color correction on multiple parts of a video and it was really easy. I was basically able to break everything down into skin color, clothing color, hair color and even jewelry color. Come of the gems matched some of the other things, so I was able to set up multiple masks to keep similar color objects and tracked roughly so my color grading on those things didn't affect similarly colored items in other parts of the shot. If you ever tried to do something like this in After Effects or premiere, this would have been a nightmare or even impossible (Have you ever tried stacking multiple Lumetri color nodes in premiere?), but in Resolve, It was so easy that I spent 90% of my time just adjusting the colors and not fighting against the program. Color correcting was almost the perfect thing, but once again there was an idiotic choice in the interface design. I needed to copy my color correction nodes to a new clip and instead of being able to just select and copy/paste them, you have to open the gallery, save a still to the gallery, then on your new clip, load the settings from that clip in the gallery. It's a really dumb workaround for a setting I am never going to need again. Copy/paste would have been quicker and easier. If you are new to video editing, this program may put you off of editing. Most of you will have no idea what you are talking about , so trying to get help may be really difficult. Also because there is a pretty small user base for Resolve, finding help on your issues can be frustrating, even if you know what you are looking for.
@m1nt9reen

@rano12321
@rano12321 Год назад
You've got many things wrong in the bible that you've written. You can also bevel edges of the alpha by using an erode and dialite node and a bump node in Fusion. Very easy. And when it comes to feature comparison, AE might have more tools for mograph but Fusion kills it with VFX compositing tools. Also, most of the things you're complaining about sounds like you just don't know how to use the software like Clicking outside of the program doesn't stop export or tracking, that's the first time I'm hearing this. You probably have a weak computer or you just doing something that your computer can't keep up with so it's stopping the action.
@LFPAnimations
@LFPAnimations Год назад
One big thing to note for Fusion. Fusion is used as a compositing software in feature film VFX houses and AE is rarely used in the VFX industry (mostly motion graphics). Fusion is a far more capable software without the training wheels on like AE. It is more comparable to Nuke from The Foundry than AE. The most insane thing about Resolve is it has both a industry standard color suite and professional VFX toolset all bundled into one software. Resolve is also a super popular choice in editorial for transcoding footage since it's export system is so robust and fast.
