I'm from Ireland 2 and I can confirm this

That's funny, I thought living in Ireland would have the opposite effect. There is some much fantasy and legend wrapped around the area and its history as well as the neighboring countries of Britain and Scotland.

@@capy-karma186 looks like you have never been to Ireland... sure it's got that kind history but now if anyone ever saw you marking you would probably either be stabbed or beaten up.

if you want to find a larp in your area, just looking around on the internet for a while should point you in the right direction, plus there are a ton of resources and guides on how to larp for cheap.

If you're in Canada, go to the nearest Underworld guild. You can play an Ajaunti (one of the races) and get your whole outfit from Goodwill.

There's actually quite a lot of larp-specialized youtube channels; it's just that few are from the USA. Larps in the USA are arguably small-scale and low-budget. There isn't a Bicolline, Mythodea or Drachenfest in the USA. Hence why a ridiculous amount of unitedstatians come up to Québec for Bicolline.

I can only talk about the German LARP scene, so take this with a grain of salt. A good start in the hobby is to play as an NPC. As an NPC, you're often out of character in the NPC camp and joke around about how the player characters are ignoring the plot and messing things up. When the GMs need mooks or major roles, you get into your costume and try to make that scene as awesome as possible. Our credo for fighting is "fight and die beautifully". Players often fight conservatively, relying on their formation, unwilling to take some risks. Many don't roleplay injuries that much because they want to avoid death or humiliation. Now to the cool part: not every player is that way. You get awesome duels with a lot of taunting and you may even be taken prisoner and interrogated. It's a cool way to meet the right kind of people and people really appreciate if you create great scenes with them. There also is the point that a place as an NPC is extremely cheap because most people want to be players. If you start as a player and don't have a group, there are some easy ways to get involved. Not everyone seeks quests and it's easy to join a group who is up to something because of that. Furthermore, if you are gathering information to learn about the great picture and then try to recruit people who may do something that needs to be done, you enjoy plenty of contact with them. Also: - never be out of character if you can't help it. - if a healer heals you without magic, be sure to scream your heart out in pain. However, thank them later for saving their lifes and invite them to share a drink with you. - If someone saves your butt in combat, be sure to thank them and concratulate them on their martial provess. Then invite them to share a drink with you. - If the players in a battle fight very defensively, step forward and taunt your enemies. Get in a duel or try to inspire your allies to move forth. - Have a personal quest that is totally unrelated to the plot. This quest should involve other players. Ask wizards and priests to lift a curse off you, seek players for dice games, look for a lord who needs a herold. Whatever works for you is fine. - If the game has a system for wild plants, ask around if someone would like to gather some with you. Some of my greatest adventures happened when I was looking for fire wood with some acquaintances. Now some things about combat: - Swing wider and slower than you would with real weapons. It's not about winning. - If you parry an attack by a big weapon, roleplay the impact of that weapon. It's okay to overact that aspect. - Even if the rules say that you have health left - if you are hit by a cool attack, let it count. - Be careful not to hit vulnerable spots and don't put your whole strength in an attack. - If you use spells, sing, chant or shout your spells. Make wide gestures and remember that you always can use longer spells than required. My fireball spell takes about a minute and is very loud, but more than once, this brought some great spotlight. In one battle in a game without rules beyond "you can do what you can portray", I tried to use a fireball against an orc. But somehow, our army formed an alley so I could fireball the gate. In that battle ,I became our siege weapon. Generally, fitting in isn't hard. People are curious about players they don't know which stick out. Just don't be that guy ;)

There are subreddits. Or jsut google major larps. Then read the documentation and New Player's Guide on their site. Larping takes more effort than D&D; but it's more immersive; it's real movement and speech, not calculations. Good larps don't have character sheets; you are your acting skills.

That does differ from system to system. The one we use around here (DragonSys) is pretty much about who is the better swordsman. Every person has 3 life points - if someone hits you on your armor, the attack doesn't reduce life points, but armor points. Fighter abilities just let you heal faster or give you more life points. If an attack puts you below three life points, it creates a wound. If you have two wounds on the same body part, it can't be used. One wound just means that you can't use it as well. if you are at 0 health, you fall unconscious and die in 10 minutes if nobody saves you. Very much of it depends on the honesty of the players and on the willingness to put on a good show. Ironically, this also means that you put yourself on a handicap. Wanting to win too much means that nobody wants to fight you because you're a munchkin. Magic is a bit more complicated. Seasoned players know most spells. You basically use props and act the spells out. When you're done, you direct the spell and direct it towards the target. Some spells let you throw stuff to hit (my fireball is basically a small red decorated sack of rice). The target then plays the effect of the spell. If someone continuously ignores spells even though they clearly noticed them, the GM may have a word with them. Still, as a spellcaster, you rely on being awesome enough that the other players want to play along.

Glowing ball was theatre of the mind, buried was just dirt put on us, when you're dead you gotta actually lay there until something happens (or you decide to get up and forfeit your body getting found).

There is no single DM, because it usually doesn't work like D&D. Most larps have people playing NPCs, which is basically like playing a PC except you don't have to pay admission and you don't get to fully decide who/what your character(s) is/are, or what their daily activities are.

You start by looking up your local larps and seeing what they're like. Then read the documentation and New Player's Guide on their website. If they don't have a website, don't bother, you want something that is well organized and won't be a ripoff. Larping is expensive and requires a lot more effort than tabletop RPGs.

If you're making a joke I Apologies in advance, LARP Live Action Role Play. Basically you get to do live action, in person, D&D where YOU are your character. If you're in Canada look into Underworld Larp

Instead of quitting, why not start your own?
