When I was 8, Davy Graham lived a few doors up. He brought me and my friend in for green tea and sat us down while he played the range of stringed instruments he had hanging on his living room wall . I never realised who he was. He was just Dave up the road. A kind gentle guy. RIP fella.

love that guitar and the twang it makes when he hits/pulls the strings hard, reminds me of slap bass, bert jansch would do that to, always adds a kick to an acoustic piece

tyler pendergast im sure it’s called a ‘snap’ on nylon strings. Seen it on tablature.
@antonyhadjion8376
@antonyhadjion8376 Год назад
It’s a Flamenco Guitar with low action which causes that ‘sizzle’ when the strings slap against the frets. Looks like a Jose Ramirez guitar with a cedar top and cypress back and sides.

Only recently discovered Davy Graham. Hypnotic skill on the guitar and I can't stop listening. What I love about his voice is how it kind of 'steps back' to allow the guitar to sing also, resulting in both sounds seeming more powerful.

I had a go on Davey's Gibson one night .the strings were so tight I could hardly bend them .his hands were extremely powerful.he played my cheap shitty guitar while I played his Gibson and he still sounded a million time better than me .and he was ten times drunker than me because he drank all my whiskey wine.i couldn't get him to play anji though .so I played it to him .I must have been pretty drunk too to be that cheeky .I'm lucky he didn't break my jaw.

Ha, you got further than I did! I’d guess I was in my mid-20s when I saw him at the 12 Bar Club on Denmark Street; this would be circa 2002-3. My friend and I were milling around backstage afterwards with Davy and his coterie of admirers - the 12 Bar was pretty relaxed and open-plan as I recall - and I spotted his guitar resting against the wall. Full of beer and youthful chutzpah, I decided that the thing to do was sit down and start playing ‘Angi’ on it. I’d got a few bars in when Davy turned to me and said, politely but firmly: “Would you stop that, please?” So I did, of course, and the next morning I felt pretty mortified to think of it. But I’m glad to have met him at all, he was a genuine legend and a one-off character.

such an interesting man whose story should be told much more than some we hear. can't remember the interview but I remember someone talking about how strong he was, and looking at them arms u can tell. not a man you'd want to wrestle with, I'm guessing if he's got a black eye the other guy probably got worse. davy was so powerful in his playing, he reminds me of rev. Gary Davis in that sense, yes there were slicker players than both in their own fields but something about that scruffiness and lack of sheen makes it feel better. You know someone is special when you've listened to tons of players in a genre but that's the guy who stands out, that's the guy that grabs your attention. Not to dissimilar to monk, who davy obviously covered. It was such a shame to see him in that last documenty, it's hard to see your heroes become human.

I dont know what knob jockey from the BBC wrote the rubbish underneath; Daveys guitar for many years was a Late ,50s Gibson J50; he impressed guitar legend John Renbourn so much he sourced one (seen on cover of "Another Monday") who,in turn, influenced Ralph Mctell to buy one.! Davey; a leader in so many ways.. P.S. On Bert Janschs first albums he played a Martin 0018 lent by Martin Carthy as Bert didnt own an instrument at the time..
