Dawless 008 - Disco, Yeah! (Roland T-8 + J-6)

Stylistically and musically I am still all over the place when I'm experimenting with my two Rolands Aira's. This time I decided to go for a disco vibe. I do feel I miss a fourth track (T-8's drum and bass and J-6's chords make three) to make my jams a bit fuller, so I'm already saving for a Novation Circuit Tracks to extend my setup and have a bit more flexibility in creating my soundscapes. I guess I'm having my first G.A.S. symptoms 😊

This is awesome. These machines are great but it's interesting seeing what other people get out of them. Some smart lead melodies using the higher octaves with the T8, I hadn't thought of that
@stofbug
@stofbug Год назад
Thanks. I know what you mean. These machines, especially the T-8, are obviously designed to be used for a specific type of music. But the fun part is exploring how you can subvert this and do unexpected things with it 😄

@@stofbug I absolutely agree! I wish the T8 could play sequences of patterns without manual adjustment but it's still such a capable tiny box
@stofbug
@stofbug Год назад
@@JoeBleeps Yeah, I’ve seen more people mentioning this, I think it is called pattern chaining or something. Maybe they will add it in a firmware update or maybe it is possible to do it with an external midi device that can send pattern change messages. I think in the manual for the T-8 it says it can receive these kind of messages, but I would have no idea which device can send them 😊.

@@stofbug I think the main thing is that it's designed as a machine for live performances so that's what it does well, rather than a preprogrammed song playing machine. Would still be a nice feature though

Yeah, I am fairly new to this and I am trying to learn how to use the few bits of gear I have. I am watching many different videos for tips and setup ideas and it is amazing seeing all the diferent ways people find to create sound variations.

I feel the same ; T-8 + J-6 are great together but something is missing. I hope that Roland will launch new units !

Yeah, me too. Something like a blend of a volca bass and a volca keys would be cool.

You should get an E-4 as well... To add some background harmonization...🤖🤖

Nice work! But where did you get these colored knobs?- they seem to be very practical ....did you paint them b yourself?
@stofbug
@stofbug Год назад
The knobs are from Thonk and are called tall trimmer toppers. They are very useful because the little white indicators show clearly which positions your knobs are in.

Great jam! I have a question: on J-6, can you set different durations to different steps? Like: step 1 has 4 beats, step 2 has 2 beats, step 3 has 8 beats, etc..?
@stofbug
@stofbug 8 месяцев назад
I sold my J-6 so I can’t test this anymore. I know you can change the arp settings on each step, but I am not sure about the step length. Sorry 😊

I think you can. I am new to the unit having only got it a couple of ays ago but I have been looking at a lot of videos for tips and I am sure I saw this done. Unfortunately I'm not sure where to point you as i have watched so many.

so now with the roland s1 out - will you get that one or stick with the circuit tracks ?
@stofbug
@stofbug Год назад
As you can see in my last few videos, the S-1 has jumped the queue and is now part of my setup 😄. Together with the Volca Bass I now have 5 tracks to work with, which will be enough to satisfy my needs (for a while 😊). I’m still planning to add the NCT to my setup, because it allows extended midi control of my devices, like pattern chaining, probability, etcetera. Plus it has a more extended drumset, that would expand upon the slightly limited T-8 drumsounds. So it definitely still would be a nice addition to my setup.

They are called Tall Trimmer Toppers by a company called Thonk in the UK.
