Dawlish in South Devon is a charming coastal seaside town close to Torquay and Exeter in South West England. With its beautiful beaches, stunning countryside, and rich cultural history, it is the perfect destination for a relaxing and rejuvenating holiday.
Here are just a few reasons why you should consider spending your next holiday in Dawlish:
The Beaches: Dawlish is home to two stunning beaches - Dawlish Warren and Dawlish Beach. Dawlish Warren is a wide, sandy beach that is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and building sandcastles. It is also home to a nature reserve, which is home to a wide variety of wildlife including birds, rabbits, and squirrels. Dawlish Beach is a smaller, more sheltered beach that is ideal for a peaceful stroll along the water's edge.
The Countryside: Dawlish is surrounded by beautiful countryside that is perfect for hiking and exploring. There are several walking trails that take you through the rolling hills, forests, and fields of the South Devon AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). You can also visit the nearby Dartmoor National Park, which is home to stunning moorland, ancient woodlands, and a wide variety of wildlife.
The Culture: Dawlish has a rich cultural history that can be explored through its various museums, galleries, and cultural events. The Dawlish Museum is a great place to learn about the town's history and see artifacts from the local area. The Dawlish Art Gallery features works by local artists, and there are several annual events such as the Dawlish Carnival and the Dawlish Regatta that celebrate the town's cultural heritage.
The Food: Devon is known for its delicious local produce, and Dawlish is no exception. The town is home to a wide variety of restaurants, cafes, and pubs that serve up delicious meals made with fresh, local ingredients. There are also several farmers' markets and food festivals held throughout the year that offer a chance to sample some of the best food that the region has to offer.
The Accommodation: Dawlish has a wide range of accommodation options to suit every budget and preference. You can choose from hotels, bed and breakfasts, self-catering cottages, and holiday parks. Many of these options offer spectacular views of the surrounding countryside or the sea, making them the perfect place to relax and unwind after a day of exploring.
The Location: Dawlish is conveniently located in the heart of South West England, making it easy to explore the rest of the region. The town is just a short drive from other popular destinations such as Torquay, Exeter, and Plymouth, and there are also several public transport options available for those who prefer to travel by bus or train.
The Weather: The weather in Dawlish is typically mild and temperate, making it a great destination for a holiday at any time of year. The summer months are generally the warmest and driest, with average temperatures ranging from 16-22°C, while the winter months are cooler, with temperatures averaging around 7-10°C.
In conclusion, Dawlish is a wonderful destination for a holiday, offering beautiful beaches, stunning countryside, rich cultural history, delicious food, and a wide range of accommodation options. Whether you're looking for a relaxing beach holiday, an active outdoor adventure, or a cultural getaway, Dawlish in South Devon has something for everyone.

I am 73 now and until about 8 years ago I used to visit Dawlish and Dawlish Warren since the age of 7or 8. Wife died a short while ago and my health deteriorated. Unlikely to visit again but brings back lots of wonderful memories with this stuff. Thankyou.

My Grandparent's home, in the 'Lake District' north of Toronto was filled with magical 1890s-1917 watercolours from the home country, everything from highland cattle, fisherman tending, to the fleet... the great Dreadnauts on the Medway. But the one that always held special pride of place at the entrance for me was...''The Cliff Path at Dawlish''.

Dawlish is a lovely friendly place to visit. It was the home of Bill Millan the piper who played on the beaches of Normandy at the D day landings during WW2. The Dawlish museum has a whole room devoted to him. The whole museum is well worth a visit!

It is a lovely video of Dawlish. The black swans are a major feature there, as is Brunel's fantastic railway. It has suffered some dramatic storms and flooding, including losing part of the track. Many years of work is being done to protect the track and sea front. There is a wonderful live cam of the trains, for those of us who love trains and such a special line😊

I’m 81 years of age now I have many happy memories spent on holidays in Dawlish in the 1950/60s , my wife & I spent our honeymoon there in 1964 at a bungalow on old gatehouse road , the owners of the property were Audrey & Derrick Wheeler, The first time I stayed there was with my parents in early 1950s at Mrs Davies cottage Badlake hill, then stayed at Mrs Newbury at No 4 Second Avenue, also stayed at wheech House Epsom Hill apparently this property was used at some point during the War by the Queen Mother, One thing I remember was playing ninepins bowling with my parents in the Brunswick arms on a night at some time in the 50s, Went again around 2015 , was very disappointed Dawlish seemed very run down the Railway Station was a mess although I believe they have done extensive work on the station , Anyway I & my wife have had lovely holidays in Dawlish & have many happy memories, Alan & Janet Kay, York.

A wonderful way to visit special places, thank you! I stayed in a hotel during my honeymoon in 1958, and have followed videos of the seaside around Dawlish since. The famous storm and seaside wall collapse was a dramatic crisis for the area. Am surprised it is nnot mentioned in your wanderings. Welcome done, and than you, Rodney - now of Vancouver Island BC

Been to Dawlish a few times. Last time was last year. Must admit love the place. 1st time stayed in flat above Premier convenience store you walked past near the front. You must walk from here to Dawlish Warren along the front. Access at the moment is via footbridge at the other end of the station. The eagle on the building was I believe as it was previously Barclays Bank and their emblem is an Eagle.

We have been going to Dawlish every year since the earlier 80’s several times a year. Love the walks and surrounding area. . Our son has recently brought a property as a holiday home, as both our sons love it and our 4 grandchildren as much as we do. Our sins were only young themselves when we started going,, so that’s two more generations loves it as much as we do. Always so peaceful. Looks very different with all the sea front having been changed recently , after a collapse of the sea wall in one area after a storm. So it all looks very different but a great job has been done.

For a few years my family came on holiday and stayed at Dawlish Warren, one train stop the other way. But I well recall coming to Dawlish, and while my parents sat on the beach, I waded upstream, under the railway bridge, then under the road bridge, and into the park, as far as he first waterfall. In my minds eye I remember those little lamps that lined the riverbank. Kids used to hang from the girders of the railway bridge and drop into the water, which at that point was about 3foot deep. But Dawlish itself looks pretty much as I remember it back in about 1966.

Hi Neil, we lived in Dawlish for around five years. You mentioned about famous people. I worked in a nursing home down by the sea front. We had a resident called Bill millin. He was in the Second World War He fought on sword beach. The Germans were scared of him as he used to play his bagpipes along the beach ( they were displayed in Dawlish museum) they called him mad millin

I first visited Dawlish with my parents as a young boy about 1960 and I remember my father saying then about the black swans being a bit special in the town. More recently, and since 2011, my wife and I have visited Dawlish during our month long touring caravan visits to Devon from Leigh near Wigan most years. Dawlish is lovely and so different to Dawlish Warren nearby. Who could forget the view of those South West main line railway lines suspended in mid air a few years ago when the substrate was washed away during storms. Loving your Devon series and our particular favorite is Brixham which is usually our Devon base most years.

I spent my early years in Dawlish, in the early 1960s. My memories of the place are coloured by the fact that I've been back, many times, but I clearly remember walking through the town when I'd have been about six years old, from our house up on Longlands, down to Station Road to catch the bus to school in Teignmouth. The town has changed a bit over the years, and is much busier these days, but it still retains it's seaside town character. I live in Canada these days, but we still managed a walk along the sea wall on our trip to the UK last year.

Hi Neil, a great video, so glad you visited Dawlish, such a lovely town. I've visited many times and will be going back in the summer, hopefully the whole of the sea wall will be reopened and you can walk all the way to Dawlish Warren, a stunning walk. Network rail are doing a huge amount of construction to protect the town and railway from the sea and have made large areas just under the railway bridge for seating etc. It's a Mecca for train spotters. It's famous for its black swans and if you go to Dawlish beach cams on RU-vid you can see the sea wall, Dawlish town and the swans 24/7. It becomes addictive to watch it. You should take a train ride that goes along the coast from Exeter to Newton abbot, it goes along the river Exe and the river Teign at Teignmouth, it's breath taking.

As a few have mentioned the railway (Brunels finest for me) you can’t beat the scenery with the trains going past especially the old steam train specials that run from time to time. The live streams are on Dawlish Beach Cams which is ran by another Neil! There are 11 of which 7 are free so worth checking out, and he has some great drone footage as well. We are down in Dartmouth in March and our plan is to hop over to Kingswear and pick up the Dartmouth steam railway into Paignton, swap trains there and pick up the main line through Dawlish to Exeter and weather dependent spend some time in Dawlish on the way there or back. You can’t beat the coastal view from the train down the coast and the river Exe as a round trip. Great day out if weather a bit ropy but having stood on Dawlish station in a gale once before it would be great to see the sea at its roughest again. Keep up the good work! Neil

I have been to Dawlish about 6 to 12 times per year, plus I also drive through here on my way to Teignmouth, and also go by train probably 20 to 30 times a year. I must say it gets much busier in the summer.

I lived in Dawlish briefly, and it remained a frequent place for my late wife and I to visit whenever we were on holiday in nearby Dawlish Warren. May I suggest that you visit Lynton and Lynmouth on the North Devon Coast neither are very big but they have some interesting history and great views

I love this video so much. Seen photos and live video streaming of Dawlish and plan to go in future. I think you should try Minehead for a video, much like Dawlish apart from railway on the front, the wsr starts by the front and travels part inland then back to coastal view.

Great video. Dawlish is my favourite holiday town. Just spent a week in town over Christmas. If visiting the best place to eat is Reflections, Marine Tavern is good for a pint. You missed the famous Gays Creamery , ideal for a pasty or cream tea. It's a shame the tide was in hiding the lovely Sandy beach.

I've never been to Dawlish, the town does look lovely though. I've been to Dawlish Warren which is just up the road from there a few times over the years. Maybe do a video there if you haven't already done so 🙂👍

I have driven through dawlish with my partner while on holiday in Devon, also there is a live webcam in one of those buildings at seafront, I think it's a restaurant and usually a gazebo over some picnic benches.I noticed it was half dismantled, I often look at the live webcams by the uk seaside

Visit Dawlish in the Summer and the flowers along Dawlish Water are fantastic. There are two aspects to Dawlish, the town where you walked and the magnificent Dawlish Warren with it's beaches and sand dunes.

On the lawn Strand side a storm damaged tree has been turned into a carved seat complete with wooden cushion. The walk from Dawlish to Dawlish Warren between the railway and the sea is terrific but not one to attempted when stormy at high tide.
